Week 5 - Term 2, 31 May 2019

From the Principal's Desk

Every Student – Every Task

This year we have implemented a range of strategies to help every student complete every task and I am happy to say that this is having a huge positive impact on our students’ learning. Every afternoon, after school there seems to be more and more students accessing the homework centre in the library and fewer and fewer students failing to hand their work in on time. All students are welcome at the homework centre and the teachers who staff it are very helpful. So, if your child has a task to complete, please encourage them to access this valuable resource.

Growth in Learning

As we get closer to the end of Semester 1, teachers are busy preparing reports for each student. These will be handed out before the end of this term and I am looking forward to reading all of them. So far, I have been very impressed with the progress Year 11 and 12 students are making towards achieving the outcomes of the courses they are studying, and it is clear they are working towards achieving their best.

Uniform

As the weather turns colder, it has been impressive to see students wearing their red school hoodies and grey school track pants. This is sending a clear message to everyone that we value our school and that we are proud to be part of such a strong learning community. If you need help purchasing any of our uniform items, please contact the school as we have a range of options available to help support families.

Congratulations to Hollie Fuller who last week won the North Coast CHS girls golf trial at Yamba Golf Club. Hollie was selected in the North Coast team.

Defence Force Work Experience Program

Last month, Year 11 student, Jackson Slomczewski, was accepted and participated in the Defence Force Work Experience Program at the RAAF Base, Townsville. The work experience program is designed to provide students with an overview of the range of career opportunities available within an Army Aviation Regiment. Jackson said the activities were interesting, informative and lots of fun. For example, going for a passenger flight in a helicopter and learning about how the helicopters work and are maintained. Well done Jackson for taking on this fantastic opportunity and for representing our school well.

Year 10 Careers Expo Coffs Harbour

Last week, Year 10 students were given the opportunity to participate in the Careers Expo in Coffs Harbour. The event included over 60 local career and tertiary education based providers and employers who gave information and advice to the students. The aim of the event was to increase student awareness of possible future study and career pathways. This is important for Year 10 students as they are in the process of considering which subjects to choose in Years 11 and 12.

BOUNCEuP

YEAR 11 students will attend a workshop next Tuesday in the library. We are committed to supporting our students at SGHS in readiness for year 12 and beyond.

BOUNCEuP- is a sport approach to Resilience  and takes a holistic and proactive approach in covering all aspects of resilience to help students improve their own wellbeing and achieve ongoing success and quality of life. Topics that are covered include:

What is resilience?

Knowing Yourself

Falling off your bike (Coping with difficult situations)

Training (Taking action to promote resilience)

Practice (Maintaining your resilience)

Year 7 Cooking Competition

Y 7 cooking dairy based food for the Great Ocean Road dairy competition. All students received an apron and pen. Hope we win!

Yr 11 Legal Studues Court House Excursion

The year 11 Legal Studies class had an interesting day at the Grafton District Court House. The case was really intriguing and illustrated many things they have been learning about so far. There was a jury sitting, and Barristers in full regalia which made for an exciting day. Many discussions took place during the break times to unpack what was going on in the courtroom and we all felt the seriousness of crime and the court judicial system. A huge thanks to Ms McCarthy for her organisation and for the executive in allowing the excursion to proceed at such short notice. It was an amazing experience as always!

Mathematics Tutoring

Some parents have made enquires about outside Mathematics Tutoring for their students.

We have a number of senior students who are keen to offer this service at reasonable rates. This is an outside of school service that SGHS supports.

Benefits of Mathematics Tutoring:

*building confidence

*extra explanation of content not understood in class

*greater speed and accuracy in answering question

*focussed learning time

*setting goals and managing due dates

Feel free to phone Mrs O’Connor (Head Teacher Mathematics) for a Senior Student Tutors’ contact details if you are interested.
