Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 16: Term 3, Week 9 - Monday, 12 September 2022

Parent Survey
The Tell Them From Me Parent Survey is now open to all Holbrook Public School families. The survey is anonymous and allows the school to identify trends within schools and better inform school priorities. The survey looks at communication between parents and staff, activities and practices at home, and parents’ views on the school's support of learning and positive behaviour to help build an accurate and timely picture that schools can use for practical improvements. The Tell Them From Me survey is held once a year commencing in Term 3 and is run simultaneously as the teacher and student surveys.  It takes around 15 minutes to complete. Parents with more than one child at the school may complete the survey more than once if they feel that their children’s experiences differ.  We value your opinion and hope you can complete the survey by 23 September. Please see the newsletter article below for the link and details on how to enter our Athlete's Foot competition.

Parent /Teacher Interviews
It was lovely to meet and talk to so many parents at our parent/teacher interviews. I had lots of positive feedback about using our Sentral app to book the interviews. It was great to hear a buzz around the room as parents discussed teaching and learning with the teachers. It is important to discuss the meeting with your child and congratulate them on their strengths. If the teacher suggested things you could do at home, discuss these with your child and plan to work together. Just a reminder that the parent/teacher interview are not the only time you can discuss your child with the teacher, but many parents and carers find it a excellent opportunity to visit the school. If you would like to contact your child’s teacher, please phone the front office, and make a time to meet or call.

Whole School Performance
I look forward to sharing our Whole School Performance, “A Night at the Movies,” with our families this week. Our students have been working on developing skills, knowledge, and understanding of all aspects of the creative and performing arts curriculum. I have been impressed by the enthusiasm and willingness of our students to step out of their comfort zone and perform on stage. A BIG thank you to the staff who have created amazing performances with their students and spent time rehearsing and creating props and costumes to provide valuable learning opportunities for our students.

Professional Learning
Last week, our staff completed our Aboriginal Professional Learning training and looked at ‘Turning Aboriginal Policy into Action’ with Tammy Makeham, Aboriginal Education and Wellbeing Advisor, and Cathie Egan, Aboriginal Community Liaison.

Congratulations!
I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate our ‘Recorder Group’ and Mrs Biar, who performed at the Sydney Town Hall in the Festival of Instrumental Music. I have heard from numerous parents that the performance was amazing, and the large group of recorders playing in such a beautiful building was breathtaking. Mrs Biar is already planning next year’s performance and trip!

I hope everyone has an enjoyable end to the term, and I wish you a safe and relaxing spring break.

Principal

Complete the 2022 Tell Them From Me Parent Survey by Friday, 23 September, and you will go into the draw for your chance to win one of four $30 Athlete’s Foot gift vouchers.

To help build an accurate and timely picture that schools can use for practical improvements, the parent survey appraises school principals and leaders from parents’ perspectives on their school and their child’s learning at home. It also covers communication between parents and staff, activities and practices at home, and parents’ views on the school’s support of learning and positive behaviour.

The survey is anonymous and allows the school to identify trends within schools and better inform school priorities. The survey is held once a year, commencing in Term 3 and is run at the same time as the teacher survey and the student survey. The parent survey takes around 15 minutes to complete. Parents with more than one child at the school may choose to complete the survey more than once if they feel that their children’s experiences differ.

As all surveys are anonymous, we will need you to take a screenshot of the final “Thanks for completing the online survey” page, and either show it to one of our staff or email it to the school at holbrook-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au and we will put your name into the draw.

Aurora Game Changers

As part of our Aurora classes, we participated in the Game Changers Challenge. We were placed in teams and had to come up with a problem facing the world, and a solution. The first round was held online, due to COVID restrictions, and we were successful in making it into the grand final. This will be held in Canberra in late October. We are both looking forward to this challenge.

Recorder trip to Sydney

What a fantastic time the recorder students had performing in Sydney on Wednesday, 31 August! We met at the Sydney Town Hall at 12:30 p.m. for a 3-hour rehearsal with all the other performers. Then we had some time free to have tea before heading back, ready for our performance. And what a night it was! There were 400 recorder players, and in the final song we were joined by 200 string players. Twenty-eight schools were represented by the recorder and string players. In between our items, other schools (mainly high schools) could showcase their musical talents, including concert bands, vocal groups, a violin solo and piano items.  We even played an encore at the end!

Our students represented Holbrook Public School exceptionally well, listening and  following instructions. Congratulations to all of them – Eddie Bull, Alexus Feltrin, Jessica Frana, Sophia Henderson, Jonty Ingle, Charlotte Ingram, Belle Lindsay and Lacey McKillop. They should be very proud of all the effort and practice they have made throughout this year.

A very big thank you to all the parents for allowing their children this opportunity. Thank you for arranging transport and accommodation and taking time off work to achieve this. Thank you also to the P&C for their support.

Trent Barrett Shield

Friday, 2 September, saw some of our Year 3/4 students attend the Trent Barrett Shield Rugby League Gala day at Jelbart Park in Albury. The boys were greeted with a beautiful sunny day, albeit with slippery and muddy conditions underfoot from all the rain in the lead-up. We played four games: against Lavington Public School teams 1 & 2, Albury Public School and North Albury Public School. With a mix of dedicated and budding rugby superstars and some quick learners who were able to transfer their sporting skills to the rugby field, saw Holbrook Public School gel as a team and come away with four victories for the day out of four matches, which left our very competitive kids (and parents in attendance!) wanting to know if there was more to play for. We had a great mix of players who could tackle and defend hard and use speed and agility to get on the outside and score. A special well done to Brax McKillop, who was our player of the day showcasing these attributes. His tenacity and readiness to pounce on the opposition when they had the ball was something to behold. A final thank you to the parents who attended; your support is greatly appreciated and is part of what makes our school so great.

Scores: Holbrook 28 v Lavi PS 2 8

Holbrook 20 v North Albury 4

Holbrook 24 v Albury PS 2 16

Holbrook 28 v Lavi PS 1 16

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition Regional Finals

Following his success at the online Local Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition, Ollie Cardile was invited to compete at the Regional Finals in Young on Friday, 9 September. He did an outstanding job, and his prepared speech was rated highest by all three adjudicators. This was a fantastic achievement as the standard was very high. As part of this competition, Ollie was also required to present an impromptu speech with only five minutes to prepare. He gave this his all; however, the winner of the entire competition went to another student, with the deciding factor being the length of his impromptu speech. Ollie should be incredibly proud of his achievements. Throughout the competition, he received constructive feedback, and he diligently applied this by extending his speech and developing his ‘manner’. Well done, Ollie!

Early Childhood Educators' Day

Early Childhood Educators' Day recognises and celebrates the work of Australia's educators in early learning services for their outstanding contribution to the well-being and healthy development of the young children in their care. It's a chance to thank Australia’s early childhood educators.

At Holbrook Public School, we would like to acknowledge the great work of the Greater Hume Children’s Services staff. Your hard work and dedication do not go unnoticed. Thank you for all you do to enrich the lives of our young people.

With thanks

The Staff and Students at Holbrook Public School
