Teachers at play - oops we mean Staff Meeting!

Earlier this term we held our staff meeting in the sand pit!

Staff made two teams and were invited to participate in a 15 minute challenge: create an interesting structure using the resources you can see. Team 2 was allowed to use water as part of their challenge, Team 1 recruited students from the yard and OSHC to help them, and were not allowed water.

Each team then shared their experience - what made the challenge engaging,  interesting, fun, competitive, as well as how the challenge was unfair. We also discussed the sandpit as a learning tool. Besides all of the curriculum area links we came up with,  the "best' outcomes were the laughter, collaboration, cooperation and fun of the shared experience. We watched R-6 teachers working as teams across year levels sharing their connection with learning in the  sandpit.

Outdoor Play Spaces are Learning Spaces too!

Have you been watching our Facebook Page? Are you wondering why you are watching this space?

Last year our teachers shared some ideas about using our outdoor space for new learning. We already have an amazing nature play area for groups to sit, learn and play together. This space was designed in 2015 with sharing circles, role play and science in mind. We now have some amazing ideas about how we can make it better! Work has started on bringing our ideas to reality and creating new learning opportunities this week and we were so excited that we held off the newsletter yesterday so that we could share the updated pictures with you!! Definitely worth the wait.

Before and After 🤩😍

Playful Pedagogy.

This year we have been encouraged to take learning outside so we have seen our R/1 classes working with Gaby Freer, the DfE Felixstow 2 MENFO based at our site. They have become actively involved and engaged in fun music activities through singing, using chants and poems, moving, creating and the playing of instruments.  Gaby has also presented via Teams into each classroom via their interactive board. These learners were so excited to see the "TV lady" walking in our corridors that some of them burst into song 😀.

Harmony Week.

Harmony Day/Week is a major event on our calendar and is a celebration of our cultural diversity – a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. It is a time of real excitement within the school and an excellent opportunity, early in the school year, to affirm our commitment to celebrating and respecting difference and diversity within our school community. As well as dressing up, we celebrate Harmony Week with classroom and whole-school activities. Our major activity this year involves all students decorating a circle of belonging to contribute to the creation of a belonging tree,

As always, the success of activities like Harmony Day depends on everyone’s contribution. We encourage all families to discuss Harmony Day and Harmony Week with their children and what it means to them.

Did you know March 21st is also the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination? If you would like to discuss any aspect of our approach to Harmony Day, please contact classroom teachers by email or Seesaw.

Thanks to our 2022 Harmony Week organizing committee for sharing websites, activities and ideas.

Message from Harmony Week Committee:

This year all classes celebrated our school’s cultural diversity and the differences that make us all special. Harmony Day is all about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. On Monday,  all classes participated in a ‘Belonging Tree’ display, which was used to celebrate each child’s cultural heritage. These were then displayed on a tree around the school for all to see.

Meat and Greet 2022

On Tuesday 22nd March, we enjoyed the opportunity to informally "meat" with families on the asphalt. Members of our community enjoyed Vegie patties and sausages prepared by Jane our PCW, and her volunteers.

Thanks to the families who came along, introduced themselves and helped us to understand a little more about their children. It was nice to be face to face and to be able to match faces to names - we are sure that those attending would agree.

We look forward to having more formal conversations about your child's achievements and setting some learning goals with you at Parent Teacher Discussions later this year.

Nice to meet you..

SPORT NEWS

FOOTBALL NEWS

Calling all Dernancourt football legends - we need more players to complete the teams!

Pretty soon the football season will be upon us and another season of fun to be had.

At the moment we are on the lookout for both players and volunteers.

Dernancourt school will be again be involved in the mixed competition and girls are strongly encourage to apply.

In previous years we have had three teams, Seniors Juniors and Minis.

This year we are hoping to get three teams again but this will depend upon the help of parents.

Previous experience in coaching or team management is not necessary so if you feel you want to come and have a go, then please volunteer.

Training is on a Thursday afternoon and games are always on a Saturday morning at Charles Campbell College.

If students use their ORSR sports voucher then there are no registration costs to parents and all participants receive 2xSANFL minor round tickets, an SANFL branded hat and a football.

We have always endeavoured to give the same opportunities to players irrespective of their experience or skill level, with the goal of the team to encourage participation and mateship. We always try to make sure that every player gets the same amount of time on the ground during the match.

As a coach, a Working With Children Check is required but is an easy process and all expenses are covered.

Teams needed to be registered by 1st April. We still are in need of more players to fill the teams.

Please email Ian Whistler at ianjwhistler@gmail.com or call 0417 085 215 for further information

PLEASE COMPLETE THE REGISTRATION OF INTEREST FORM IF YOUR CHILD/CHILDREN ARE INTERESTED IN PLAYING FOOTBALL THIS SEASON.
