Letter from the Principal, Kelli Johnston

Introduction

Dear Families,

Last Friday we celebrated St Patrick’s Day as a school.  It was fantastic to see students get into the spirit of the day and the school looking very green!  Congratulations to all students for your efforts. All money raised from St Patrick’s Day will be donated to Project Compassion.

It was also terrific to see our Year 6 leaders travel into the city with Mrs Mandarino to attend mass and the celebrations of the day at St Patrick’s Cathedral.  Our school leaders represented St John the Baptist in an exemplary manner. Thank you to all.

St Patrick's Day - Friday March 17th

St Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. Patrick preached and converted all of Ireland for 40 years. He worked many miracles and wrote of his love for God in Confessions. One of the reasons we wear green on St. Patrick's Day is because of Ireland's nickname, The Emerald Isle. The green stripe in the Irish flag also played a role.

Open Day for 2024

St John the Baptist Open Days for 2024 Prep Children

Throughout the term a number of school tours have been led for families seeking to enrol their children for the 2024 school year. The school open days have been well attended.

We have one final Open Day for this year: Thursday 11th May

Families with siblings commencing school in 2024 are asked to submit enrolments as soon as possible to assist with confirmation of student numbers for 2023.

Harmony Day - Tuesday March 21st

It was terrific to see students wearing orange in recognition of Harmony Day. Thank you to Mrs Mandarino for the preparation of prayer for the day. Harmony Day is a great day to recognise and celebrate Australia’s diversity and how fortunate we are to live in such a culturally rich and diverse country.

Harmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity - a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. Australia is one of the most multicultural countries in the world. Our cultural diversity is a great strength and brings with it a host of traditions, religions, languages and food. It helps us to do things in different ways, reduces discrimination and promotes the acceptance of difference. March 21st is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

Regional Swimming - Good Luck!

Good luck to all students competing in the Regional Swimming Competition this Friday. It is a wonderful achievement to make it through to regionals. Enjoy every moment of the day and know that we are exceptionally proud of you all.

Athletics Day - Monday March 27th

Preparations are underway for the St John the Baptist Athletics Day at Knox Athletics Track (Bunjil Way, Knoxfield). The Year 3-6 students will be at the track for the full day and the Prep-2 students will be at the track from approximately 10am - 1:30pm.  Mr Mitchell is currently working with students to prepare for a day of fun. We invite families to join us for a day of colour and fun!!

Parents who are available to assist on Athletics Day are asked to email Mr John Mitchell to inform him of their availability.

John’s email address is - jmitchell@sjferntreegully.catholic.edu.au

Staff Professional Learning

As in all industries Professional Learning is important, as this provides new learning, new insights, learning from others, along with reenergising and revitalising, which nurtures us to work towards improvement and excellence.

This Tuesday and Wednesday Jo Stoica, Kathryn Forbes, Ursula De Corrado and myself will attend two days of Professional Learning with a number of MACS Schools working on how to use data to inform and direct school improvement outcomes. The days will be led by Bradley Geise an international educational consultant who specialises in using Data for Continuous School Improvement.

We look forward to two days of learning as a team and implementing our learning at St John’s.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN continues this week for students in Years 3 and 5.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9, and is the only nationwide assessment that all Australian children undertake.

It’s a measure to see whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning, and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.

The NAPLAN assessment period will commence Wednesday 15th March and conclude Monday 27th March. The Year 3 and 5 students will commence their NAPLAN program with Writing, followed by Reading, Conventions of Language and then conclude with Numeracy.

We wish all students the best as they undertake the NAPLAN assessments.  We know that all students will try their very best in each of the NAPLAN assessments. Good luck everyone, we know you will be terrific.

Parent Support Group (PSG) Meetings

As we approach the end of the term families will receive communication from Jo Stoica - Learning Diversity Leader, in relation to making time for a PSG meeting.  PSGs are an opportunity to review and reflect on the goals set in student Personalised Learning Plans for the term, to celebrate student growth and set goals for Term 2.

At St John the Baptist School we strongly value the partnerships developed at PSG Meetings dedicating time and the release of teachers through CRT employment to run such meetings.

We thank everyone involved for their commitment and partnership in supporting our students in their learning journeys.

Easter Raffle

As part of this year’s Lenten season almsgiving, we are asking each family to contribute an Easter Egg.  The Easter Eggs will then be bundled to create hampers in which families can purchase raffle tickets for and go into a draw to win. The Parents and Friends will then draw the raffle on Wednesday 5th April.  Please refer to P&F section for further information.

Child Safe Practices - Working with Children Checks

St John the Baptist School is committed to providing a child safe environment and takes active steps to ensure any person authorised to conduct ‘child connected works’ does not pose a risk to their safety or welfare. To achieve this, the school implements screening processes, including Working With Children Checks (WWCC), to assess and verify their suitability.

St John’s School ensures that non-teaching staff, contractors, volunteers and visitors are of suitable character and do not have a relevant criminal record that poses an unjustifiable risk to children.

Teaching Staff & Casual Relief Teachers who are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) undergo criminal record checks via their annual registration.

Volunteering to Assist with School Programs- WWCC

Parents would be aware that to assist with any of our school programs that all volunteers, parents/guardians/family members are required to have a current Working With Children Check on our school records.

Family members are to provide a copy of the WWCC to the school office.

Can you believe we are already in Week 9 of Term 1?! Where did that time go? Have a fabulous week everyone.
