Annual General Meeting of Governing Council NEXT TUESDAY
The Governing Council represents all parents and exists to provide direction and policy support to improve the school. Governing Council is an important decision-making group. For example, the Governing Council approves the school budget, and approves new policies.
Governing Council only meets twice per term, with the meetings taking about 1.5 hours each time. Governing Council needs some new parent representatives. If you want to get involved in the running of the school, this is your opportunity.
The Annual General Meeting of Governing Council will happen on Tuesday March 28 at 6.00pm in the Staff Room. Any parent or carer with children in the school is able to attend, and to join the Governing Council.
We invite you to come along. A free creche will be provided.
Autism Inclusion Teacher Role for Burton Primary School
As of February 2023, the Department for Education has appointed an Autism Inclusion Teacher in every public primary school.
The Autism Inclusion Teacher will;
· Provide support to fellow educators on how to best support and educate autistic students.
· Drive improved practice relating to autism that works for our school.
The Autism Inclusion Teacher appointed at our site is Di Dunkeld. Di has this role 1 day per week.
This is an exciting opportunity to improve the support we provide to autistic children and young people at our school.
Visit the Department for Education website to find out more about improving support for autistic children and students.
NAPLAN Testing
Last week our Year 3 and 5 students have completed 3 of the NAPLAN tests- Reading, Language Conventions and Writing. This week they will do the Numeracy test.
Swimming and Aquatics
Families will now have received information about swimming lessons (Reception to Year 5) and Aquatics (Year 6). Both swimming and Aquatics will happen in week 1 of term 2, so payment for swimming and aquatics must be completed by April 6. The water safety consent forms and any medical forms must also be completed this term.
Pupil Free Day
Last week’s Pupil Free Day was used by teachers to work on the new Brightpath writing tool. Brightpath is being introduced to all schools across South Australia by the Department for Education. We use Brightpath to assess each child’s (story) writing ability.
Our SSO’s worked on how they improve the phonics ability of students. Phonics is the foundation to students being able to read.
We understand that pupil free days sometimes cause problems for families, but these days are really important for staff training. Therefore, we thank parents for their continued support.
Parents/ Carers Entering Rooms
Parents and carers are reminded that you should not enter classrooms between 8.45am and 3.05pm. If you wish to speak with the teacher, please contact him/her by email, Skoolbag or Seesaw to make a time to chat.
Recently, there have been a number of times when parents/ carers have entered classrooms in the middle of lessons while teaching is happening. This interrupts the learning and breaks the flow of the lesson.
Before School
Students can only enter the school grounds after 8.30am when teachers begin yard duty and supervision. All students need to be in the courtyard between 8.30 and 8.45, because that is the only area where the yard duty teachers are supervising.
Some students have been arriving at school at 8.00 and are not booked into OSHC. In future, Governing Council has agreed that those students will be placed into OSHC – at parent cost- until teacher yard supervision in the courtyard begins at 8.30.
