Student Leaders' Challenge Week & Pyjama Party Day

We are all looking forward to "Pyjama Party Day" TOMORROW, where we all get to come to school in our comfy, warm PJs. Our student leaders look forward to hosting a little disco party for our Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 on Friday as well.  We hope this will be a lovely way to end Term 2!

Our student leaders have done an exceptional job planning and leading their "Challenge Week" project this week. Lots of fun and excitement has been shared as well as a little bit of 'mostly' healthy class competition! We congratulate 6M on being the champion class of "Challenge Week" finishing with the highest point score.  We are sure they will enjoy their Pizza Party tomorrow!

Enormous thanks and congratulations to our wonderful student leaders who initiated this project as a way to strengthen connectedness across the school and give us all an opportunity to have some fun in the last week of Term 2! Well done leaders! I'm so proud of your efforts!

SOME CHALLENGE WEEK PHOTOS...

Farewell and best wishes, Mrs Stanley!

Although tinged with sadness, we all were so grateful to have had the opportunity to farewell our wonderful Mrs Stanley this afternoon with a very special student assembly! To say we are going to miss you Mrs Stanley is a major understatement. Thank you for motivating and inspiring each and every one of us to be the best versions of ourselves we can be!

We know our professional paths will cross in the future and we are comforted knowing you're 'just down the hill'. We're so proud of you, are so grateful for your exceptional leadership and we wish you all the very best for your new challenge ahead!

We're going to miss you SO MUCH!

More Staffing News- Farewell Mrs Caskey!

Sadly for all of us here at BHPS, we will farewell our wonderful Mrs Caskey at the end of this term. Due to personal reasons, Mrs Caskey has advised us this week that she will be returning home to New Zealand early next term. Mrs Caskey has been a valued staff member at Beacon Hill and we are all going to miss her terribly (especially her gorgeous 2HC and 4G students this year). Her last day with us will be tomorrow.

Mrs Caskey- we thank you so much for sharing your expertise and for the kindness and warmth you have extended to all of us at BHPS. We will miss you very much!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I would sincerely like to thank everyone for their support this term. It has most certainly been a term we will never forget. To the amazing BHPS staff, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. Thanks for your flexibility, resourcefulness, creativity, and kindness. More than ever, I am impressed by your ingenuity, your resilience, your passion and your strength, as we have navigated unprecedented challenges TOGETHER. I am SO proud to be BHPS Principal, and grateful to have such wonderful colleagues in all of you.

Wishing everyone a refreshing, relaxing break and lots of wonderful moments with friends and family! We look forward to our students returning to school on Tuesday 21 July.

School Development Day Monday 20 July 2020

The first day of term 3 is a school development day for us at Beacon Hill. BHPS staff will be involved in a series of workshops throughout the day exploring school improvement planning, evidenced based teaching and wellbeing practices and high quality learning frameworks as part of our Curiosity and Powerful Learning journey.

Please note: our students’ first day back to school for Term 3 is Tuesday 21 July.

Looking Ahead to Term 3!

Since our last update, we have no further changes to school operations.

The main points of consideration for our school as we head towards Term 3 continue to be:

*Non-essential adults are still not permitted on school grounds or at school events - this includes parent or carers. All adults must continue to maintain physical distancing as per the AHPPC guidelines.

*School assemblies can be held but at this stage are limited to 15 minutes in length and with students and staff present only. We will continue holding virtual assemblies via Zoom or short school assemblies to present awards!

*Performing arts groups, including our band program, will recommence on site rehearsals. At this stage, they would not be able to run with parent volunteers so we have some wonderful staff members volunteering their time to assist with supervision in the meantime.

School sport can recommence including inter-school competitions. However, our local winter PSSA competition will not proceed. We will run school based activities during Term 3!

* Life Education Van is scheduled for a visit!

* School Photos have been rescheduled (no staff photo at this point).

* SRE lessons will recommence from Wednesday 5 August.

* P&C Meetings can be held but it is strongly recommended that these continue to be via online platforms.

* Extracurricular activities supported by external providers, such as Sportspro and DanceSport, can recommence adhering to the AHPPC  and DoE guidelines and recommendations.

* Our canteen and uniform shop can operate with volunteers (adhering to AHPPC guidelines).

*Good hygiene practices and regular cleaning will continue! Bubblers still remain closed so be sure to pack full water bottles each day!

The following is still on hold but will be reviewed early in Term 3-

School camps and excursions.

Parent attendance at school events.

Parent volunteers except for Canteen and Uniform Shop.

School events involving large adult gatherings, eg. fundraisers, working bees, information evenings.

The beginning of Term 3 will see us return to normal break times and timetables. We will return to a 9:05am start time (no more staggered starts). The Kiss and Drop will continue to be supervised in the mornings. In the afternoon, we will no longer stagger our pick up procedures. However, we will continue with the same collection points as per Term 2 and Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 will be ready for pick up from their collection point from 2:55pm.

I thank everyone so much for their support and flexibility during this period. We are also so appreciative of the many parents/ carers who completed our "Semester One Reflections" survey. Your feedback is greatly appreciated and will certainly assist us to firm up decisions to support organisation for Semester Two. We will continue to inform you as we hear of further easing of restrictions in schools.

Semester One Reporting to Parents

Parents and carers will receive their child’s Semester 1 report in digital format TODAY- Thursday 2 July 2020 from 3pm. Detailed information on how to access reports has been sent home via email (attachment and information is below for your reference as well).

This will be a simplified version of the report you normally receive and will not grade student achievement using the usual 5 point scale. Please be aware that all students may not have covered the same syllabus outcomes or content during this period. There will be a focus on the learning covered in English and Mathematics, along with a general comment which may provide information on other key learning areas and what can be done to support further learning growth.

Sentral Parent Portal Letter

Our semester 1 student reports will be published for parent access on our SENTRAL Parent Portal on Thursday 2nd July.

Your child's/children's reports are securely stored on the portal. Parents are able to download and/or print copies of their child's report at their convenience. As of 3pm Thursday 2nd July, your child's school report will be published and available online.

Farewell

To the wonderful Beacon Hill PS community,

It is with a combination of sadness and excitement that I am leaving the Beacon Hill PS community at the end of this term. I am very excited and look forward to starting the new phase in my career as Principal of Brookvale Public School.

It has been an absolute honour and privilege to be of service to the Beacon Hill PS community over the last 16 years. I feel I am extremely fortunate to have worked for such a long period of time in the same school community. From the very first day I was impressed by the warmth and openness of this community.  During this time I have had the pleasure and privilege of supporting thousands of children to learn and grow. A lot of those children I am lucky enough to still see today and have watched them grow into wonderful young adults.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank every member of the Beacon Hill PS community both past and present. With the support of our amazing Principal, Ms Peta Hanson, Assistant Principals and fabulous teachers, caring parents including P and C and the wider school community, we have built a rich culture that inspires learning and enables students to do their best. I’m proud to have been part of this success. I won’t forget the passion, hard work and dedication of the teachers, students and parents who work in partnership in educational excellence. Keep being BHPS Learning Superheroes!

I will fondly remember my time at Beacon Hill and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I will miss you all and will be watching the school’s continued successes closely. I wish every family all the best and hope that every child enrolled here continues to enjoy the exciting educational opportunities provided by this school.

With thanks and kind regards,

Jane Stanley (Deputy Principal)

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

·         year of schooling

·         category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional

·         level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

·         formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools

·         consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools

·         develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is underway and goes through until August 28th 2020. The challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge for each student to read, to read more and to read more widely. The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is available for all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9.

Year

Number of books you must read

Minimum number of PRC booksMaximum number of Personal Choice booksPRC booklists you can read from

5-6201555-6, 7-9
7-9201555-6,7-9

Go to the new PRC student website. There is a video on the PRC Support site that you can watch that demonstrates how to login, search for books and add them to your child's individual Student Reading Record (SRR).

A link to the Premier’s Reading Challenge website can be found in the

Student Portal under the Learning section.  Students are also able to add a link to the PRC in the My Link List section to make the PRC easier to find.

The URL to use is  https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/studentExperience.html#/

Students can access the PRC website using their Department of Education (DoE) username and password.  These are the same details a student would use to access the Student Portal and the computer network at school.  If you are unaware of your username and/or password, please contact your class teacher and ask for your Student Portal username and/or password.

We encourage as many students to partake in the challenge as possible. All students who participate will go into a class draw, with a prize for a student per class at the end of the challenge.

Please come and see me if you would like more information on the PRC or assistance in sourcing books.

This year we are asking all students in K-6 to log their own books to complete the challenge.

Happy reading!

BOOK FAIR IS COMING

I am very excited that we are having a book fair this year. This year it may look a little different but there are many things that are the same.

·         You can still buy books

·         Every purchase benefits the school and your child

·         You can still donate books

·         You can still browse books, this time on line

·         Your child will still be able to buy a variety of books from fiction, picture books, nonfiction books, games books and more.

·         Students still come home with a wish list of titles that they are interested in.

Things that are different with a virtual book fair is

·         You can shop with your child from the luxury of your own home

·         You can purchase a variety of books, not just book fair books. If you buy other books for your toddlers, novels or books for you the school will still benefit.

·         Once you have ordered you will have to wait a little longer for the books to be delivered to school and sent home

The book fair will run from

Monday 3rd August – Saturday 18th  August

More details will come home at the beginning of the term.

I realise that these are tough times but we really appreciate your support.

Overdue books

It is fantastic that so many children have been reading during remote learning and are continuing to enjoy reading a variety of books now. This however has lead to us having a HUGE amount of overdue books.

Notes have gone home this week to remind you which books your children have borrowed out under their name. If they have been returned already please let me know either in person or or via email. If you can not find these books at home; please replace the book with a new copy and send it to the library or office OR you can pay for the book and we will re-purchase the book for others to enjoy.  The cost of the book is on the notice. Please bring the notice in with payment so that we can take it off the system.

Classes who return all over due books before the end of the term will  claim a small reward for their efforts.

Happy reading!
