From the Principal

Another week and as is the case at OLSH, always something new, different, challenging and exciting!

Assessment for the semester finishes this week and reporting is underway. Students are preparing and practicing items for the end of year Mass, Graduation and Awards Day to be held on Tuesday 29 November 2022. Mass at the Cathedral, then Graduation and Awards Ceremony in the MSC Centre.

Unfortunately, the Parent meeting convened for Wednesday afternoon was very poorly attended. This may have been because of the mixed message of a curfew being in place in Kavieng. The aim of the meeting was to inform the school community that the year ahead,2023, will be very challenging. As mentioned previously, the economy is under severe strain and funding for various government operations have been revised and cuts to some programs are to be expected. With that, there is uncertainty of the NIPG scholarship program being able to continue. This program has boosted enrolments and fees for OLSH over the past few years. It is expected the number of students feeding into the program is unlikely to occur. This will place a lot of pressure on the operation of the school. The school has been in similar situations before and has managed to scrape through. In planning for the year ahead we have been and will have to be creative in how we manage the business.  Continue to pray for the years ahead for OLSH. Equally important, if you value having a school like OLSH in the Province, be proactive and do what you can do to promote and support the work to continue. Get involved and be part of the team. Parent/Guardian involvement is essential for the continuation of OLSH delivering quality P – 12 education to the residents of New Ireland.

Trust you have a blessed weekend.

Best regards,

Mr Geoff Jackson

Reminders

Assessments

Semester 2 assessments will end this Friday 11th November.

 Uniform

With reference to the OLSH Uniform Policy, we are sending students home who come to school incorrectly dressed to fix themselves before coming to school. Boys with beards or funny hairstyles are asked to trim their hair and shave their beards at school, which should not be the case, as they should already be properly groomed before coming to school. Thus, parents please make sure your child looks presentable at home before he or she is sent to school.

Importantly: a student in OLSH uniform is an OLSH ambassador and should not violate any school rule/policy whilst in school uniform-inside or outside of school.

Let us all encourage our students, your child or children to take pride in their appearance and presentation each and every day.

 Study expectations

Please assist your child in making sure that he or she spends time studying at home. Your child can only better himself or herself with continued practice. Thus, let us all work together to help your child achieve the best possible result this semester.

With that, to all and especially the students:

From the Head of P-6

Yes! We are at the end of Week 6 and also nearing the end of the school year and just a few more weeks before we end the academic year of 2022.

Assessment is finishing this week so parents and guardians we appeal to you to support us by ensuring that your child has submitted all given tasks. Please do not hesitate to come in and see the teachers if otherwise.

Though assessment is ending teaching and learning is still on going so we expect your continued support right till the last day. We all know that as we near the end students may want to drop standards but here at OLSH we maintain learning and standards right to the end. In this regard we ask for support in maintaining the 3As as follows;

  • Attendance – Learning is on- going so every child is required to keep coming to school every day.
  • Application –  each child must be applying themselves according to school rules and policies
  • Appearance – the school uniform is our identity and pride so please ensure that your child is correctly and neatly attired at all times before coming to school. If otherwise, please provide a note of explanation to the class teacher.
