Term 3 Week 10 Newsletter - Friday 23 September 2022

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Mr Dill

A Rich Curriculum

As the term comes to a close, it is a pleasure to reflect on the richness of the learning opportunities being provided for students at the school. This takes place on a daily basis in classrooms but also through events in Term 3 like the Stage 2 Planetarium incursion, the Premier's Spelling Bee, debating, Public Speaking competitions, performances by school choirs, DIM band performances, Open Day & Grandfriends Day, Art showcase, Koomurri Aboriginal incursion, Interrelate, Zone & Regional athletics carnivals, Balmain SSC Science show, author visits from Tim Harris & Matt Cosgrove for Book Week, Book Week parade, Stage 3 Positive Peers incursion and our wonderful Spring Carnival.

I would like to sincerely thank our staff for their energy and commitment to the school and wish them well for the break.

Witch or Wizard?

In the evening of Friday 28th October next term we will be holding a Halloween disco for infants classes (5.30pm - 6.45pm) and primary (7.00pm - 8.30pm). The P&C are asking for a volunteer/s that could help organise this event.  This would involve liaising with the school in relation to the program, basic decoration of the hall, organising the food and parent roster, and registration of students on arrival.  If you are able co-ordinate this event, please email the school.

Kindergarten Information Evening

The information evening for Kindergarten students starting at DPS in 2023 is being held on Thursday 13 October 2022 from 7pm – 8.30pm (6:45pm tea & coffee).

The Program will include:

  • Effective teaching and learning in Kindergarten
  • How young children learn
  • Catering for the needs of all students
  • Readiness for school
  • How you can prepare your child for school
  • 'Best Start' assessment
  • Parent involvement at school
  • Kindergarten 2023 Orientation Program -

including selection of afternoon session in the week beginning 24th October.

Stranger Danger

For the school holidays please remind your children of the following points in relation to stranger danger:

  • Avoid walking on your own and instead walk with other family members, friends or an adult you know;
  • Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths where there are lots of other people;
  • Make sure your parents or another adult who knows you, knows where you are at all times;
  • Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to;
  • Know where safe places are – a shop, service station, police station, library or school. If you are ever frightened, you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police; and
  • Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help – police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust.

Please remind the children to 'never go anywhere with anyone without asking you first.'

Summer Uniform

In Term 4, it is expected that all students will wear the DPS full summer uniform. Items can be purchased online through the uniform shop at: https://www.school24.net.au/

Thank you to every parent for your generous support of the school thoughout Term 3 and we look forward to seeing all students return to school on Monday 10th October. A reminder that there is NO Staff Development Day on the Monday of week 1.

Best wishes for the break,

Brian Dill

Tell Them From Me Parent Feedback Survey

Final chance to give us feedback!

If you have not had the chance to complete the Partners in Learning parent survey on student engagement, please do it soon.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers and typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. Your responses are very much appreciated.

Unexplained Absence notes

Notes for unexplained absences are automatically generated electronically and sent home with students who were marked absent with no explanation. If your child was absent for several days and you called to explain one of the days, you will still receive a note for the unexplained days.

Please fill in the reason for the absence and sign below before returning it to the office.

All student absences are required to be explained. Please do this by:

  • calling the school office on 9181 2636
  • sending an email to Drummoyne-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au
  • entering a submission on the Skoolbag App
  • Bringing in a written note when your child returns to school. All absences over 3 days require a doctor’s certificate.

Thank you for your understanding.

SMS Messaging

In an effort to make it easier for parents to notify the school of a student absence, we are using SMS messaging. At 10am each morning, if your child has been marked absent, you will receive an SMS message to your phone. You will then be able to respond via return SMS, phonecall, email or reply via Skoolbag with the reason for your child's absence.

 If you have documentation supporting the absence (such as a medical certificate or negative COVID test result), please send it to school with your child when they return.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

COVID 19 Update

Please contact the office if you would like additional RAT kits for testing during the school holidays.

  • be symptom free before returning to school.
  • if symptoms remain after 5 days, remain in self-isolation for 7 days from the day they tested positive and continue following NSW Health guidelines.
  • complete a RAT and return a negative result before attending school on days 6 and 7 after testing positive to COVID-19
  • wear a mask on days 6 and 7 when attending school (for all staff and those students aged 12 years and older).

GENERAL NEWS

Solar Buddy Program

This week students in class 5/6O wrote letters to children living in energy poverty. The SolarBuddy Program has delivered countless lights to illuminate futures all around the world, from Papua New Guinea to different parts of Africa.

Class 5/6O students will be sending 25 lights to help children in a developing nation to study after dusk, have a cleaner source of light, and help them do a huge variety of other things they have never done before. We carefully read the ‘Dos and Don'ts’ to write in our letters, we brainstormed ideas, drafted them and finally wrote them down on the designated piece of paper.

They were then attached to the lights we recently made and packed in a yellow container, ready to be sent to children all around the world. While we are unsure at this stage where our lights are heading, we know they will improve the lives of other children!

Wild at Art Competition 2022

Throughout September and October, children aged 5-12 are invited to create an original artwork of one of Australia's many threatened native animals or plants, along with a short written component on their chosen threatened species.

Online submissions are open from Wednesday 7 September (Threatened Species Day) to Monday 31 October.

Competition details:
https://www.acf.org.au/wild-at-art-competition

An important learning experience

Wild At Art is an opportunity for primary school children to learn about Australia's threatened wildlife and speak out for a future where plants, animals and people thrive.

The beautiful artworks and moving written explanations demonstrate the depth of concern and love that children have for our vanishing wildlife. Through the competition, many children feel empowered knowing that by raising awareness, they can make a difference.

Ms Richmond will be available on Tuesdays at lunchtime, after the eating bell, in her room (purple door upstairs) to discuss ideas, guide students and offer a space in which to work.
