Newsletter Number 9 • Wednesday 10th August 2022

From the Principal

This week we are delighted to launch the new 2022-2027 Strategic Plan which has been twelve months “in the making”.  Over the past year we have surveyed the parent community, staff and students, conducted SWOT analyses for each school committee and held sessions and discussions at Board level about the direction and priorities of our school.  We have also reflected upon our achievements thus far.  The process has been a truly collaborative effort.  All the information gathered has been collated which has assisted us in setting clear goals and future direction for the school over the next five years.

I would like to thank Meg Barker (Board member) for her leadership in chairing the Strategic Planning committee.  I also thank the Strategic Planning committee for their input, diligent work and assistance in putting this important document together. To all of the parents, staff and students who took the time to contribute to the development of this Strategic Plan, we say thank you.

I believe that the Strategic Plan reflects where the school is currently at and provides some key strategic initiatives for the future.  The innovative format and beautiful photos and production of the document depicts our unique environment and truly captures the essence of our school.

This plan will drive the school’s operations over the next few years and together as a school community I feel we have the determination, passion and ‘know-how’ to realise and achieve our goals.  I hope you take the time to read the document and it inspires you to think about the role that you can play in working together as a school community to attain our vision.

The plan continues to be organised under five key strategic priorities: values and culture, learning and engagement, space and place, business and governance, and connection and communication. Our priorities, goals and actions over the next five years will focus our energy and resources, strengthen our operations and support our culture.

We know our community flourishes when we live our values and work together. We are committed to nurturing the endless possibilities of our students, tending to the talent of our educators and growing the strengths of our parent community.

We invite and encourage you to help us deliver on this Strategic Plan 2022-2027.

Cathy France

Principal

The Strategic Plan will be sent home to families on Wednesday 10 August. It is also available via our website here Strategic Plan 2022-2027

2022 Theme - 'Appreciation'

This week we appreciate the collaboration from many different people who have come together to produce our Strategic Plan 2022-2027. Throughout 2022 our school leadership team, staff, parents and students have come together to share thoughts and ideas as they were asked to consider the possibilities, opportunities and actions to ensure we continue to thrive as a school community. A collaborative strategic plan can capture the hearts and minds of those within our school community and allow us to be part of something bigger, providing a purpose and process. Thank you to everyone who has contributed, we truly appreciate it!

Board Communique

At our last Board meeting, we reviewed our risk management plan: compliance risks, discussed our code of conduct for Board members, and Cathy presented our 2021 Compliance Certificate and School Performance report.

Jade Crathern

National Youth Championships in Bouldering

Congratulations to Eliana, one of our Cycle 3 students who recently competed in the National Youth Championships in Bouldering in Sydney where she placed ninth in Australia.  We asked Eliana to tell us about her experience at the championships in Sydney.

"On June 4th I competed in the National Youth Championships in Bouldering at Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym, Villawood. I represented South Australia in category Youth D Female, which is for competitors 11 and under.

There were 20 competitors in my category and there were seven Boulder problems to climb. We had half an hour to attempt each of the boulder problems and each attempt was judged by an official for a score. I came ninth in the competition which means I have a national ranking of nine in Australia and I ranked the highest in my category for South Australia.

Thank you to the Adelaide Hills Council for their grant of $100".

Government Accountability

As part of our funding agreement with the Australian Government, we are required to ensure that specific “School Performance Information” is made publicly available to the school community.  This information is provided to the school community in various forms such as newsletters and the Annual Report throughout each year.

A collated version of this information under the headings specified by the Australian Government is now accessible on our school website for perusal by parents and the general public.  You can access the report here.  The information relates to the 2021 school year.  You may note that some of the information may be slightly different to the information provided on the government’s My School website due to the month of the year the data was captured or the inclusion/exclusion of preschool/infant program students.

Roundtable Interviews at Wairoa

As part of the reporting procedures, three-way parent / teacher / student roundtables will be offered this term in Week 5 at Wairoa.

An email will be sent out in the next week giving parents more information about these and providing a step by step guide as to how to make an on-line booking.  The Roundtable Interviews are an opportunity to discuss your child’s achievements and areas for further learning.  Wairoa Term 2 reports were posted to families during the last school holidays.

Cycle News

Infant Program

The infant program has been buzz with practical life activities! Children have been practising their chopping skills by slicing up mushrooms. Children love to contribute and help out - scrubbing chairs is always a popular activity. We also enjoyed making beautiful winter bird feeders to take home to hang in a tree and hopefully enjoy some bird watching.

Cycle 1 Preschool

After settling in to the first few weeks of term, the preschool students have been exploring the concept of Simple Machines, Transport and Colour.

It is amazing how much the children already knew when they described the different parts or functions of a simple machine, with words such as ‘cogs, axels, pulleys, screws’ before we had even started our focus on machines.

The children had the opportunity to use a variety of different items: turning the gears of a whisk, winding the key on a can opener, opening and closing tongs and understanding a pair of scissors is a simple machine. The outdoor play equipment became the base for a set of pulleys which hoisted containers of blocks up to the children on the top platform to stack.

“It’s really easy to lift the basket because the rope slides through the pulley!” Vinnie

Tying into the topic of Simple Machines was our next focus, Transportation. Children have begun to show their understanding of the diverse ways we are able to move and transport. Some of the favourite modes of transport were emergency service vehicles which help people, construction vehicles that build, dig or carry things and racing cars just because they, “Go really fast!”.

The children have worked with Transportation 3 part cards to view a variety of vehicles, matched construction vehicles to their correct image, engaged with a sorting game which classifies items into categories such as transport which drives on the road, flies in the air and travels on the water.

“The machine which lifts up dirt or moves it around is an excavator.” Magnus

“There are headlights on the car but the ones with lights on the roof are police or ambulances.” Luca

Cycle 1 Primary

This term our Cycle 1 Primary students are exploring the properties and uses of magnets in science. After discussing the types of materials that are magnetic, children began testing their ideas by finding items that their magnet would stick to. Later, they classified objects into magnetic and non-magnetic. The children have been very curious and shared great knowledge in this topic including the following:

“Metal can stick to a magnet.” Alice (We later discovered that not all metals are magnetic.)

 “Magnets stick together.” Max

“Gravity (magnetic force) pulls magnets to metal.” Indi

 “Spoons are magnetic.” Tom

“A type of putty is magnetic.” Noah

 “Magnets stick to fridges.” Mila

“In the middle of the Earth, the lava sticks.” Yuchi

“Some metal and some rocks stick.” Chloe

“The Earth has a magnetic field around it.” Henry

“Magnets do not float!” Corey

Cycle 2

This term we welcome Maggie to our Cycle 2 team! Maggie will be teaching Thursdays and Fridays for the rest of this year, as Bonnie prepares to go on maternity leave.

Our Cycle 2 focus for cultural studies this term has included two key areas:  the study of Africa and the fundamental human need of shelter.

The children began learning where Africa is positioned on a world map, as well as locating the 57 countries that the continent holds. They began researching facts on some of the countries and used an atlas to find the corresponding flag and bordering countries.

As a part of our study on the fundamental human need of shelter, students worked with Maggie researching different traditional African shelters. They had the opportunity to design and make shelters influenced by the Ndebele people of South Africa.

Cycle 3

This term, Alex and Suzie's class is reading, exploring, writing and sharing poetry. Here are some of the poems that students in our class have composed.

❄️🌨❄️

Winter (a Haiku) by Eliana

The sea is so harsh.

The rain thumps hard on our roof.

An icy chill passes.

The wind blows so hard,

that we can't stand on our feet.

The trees lose their leaves.

The clouds block sunset.

A freezing cold winter's night.

Spring is coming soon.

❄️🌨❄️

Winter in the South by Lucia

As the mist swirls twisting and turning we shiver, and try to think of warmer days.

It is winter in the south.

If you look closely tiny diamonds can be seen glistening in the early morning light.

It is winter in the south.

And when the icy wind blows through the trees the tiny diamonds are knocked to the ground, hidden by the grass.

It is winter in the south.

Indonesian with Ellis - Preschool, Cycle 1, Cycle 2

In Term 3 all junior-year levels will focus on the theme ‘Perayaan’ (celebration) by marking  Hari Kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia  (Indonesian Independence Day - 17 August 1945).

They will learn the history, key traditions and symbolic significance of Independence Day by learning and singing the Indonesian national anthem, playing traditional Independence Day games and sampling special treats.  As part of their broader intercultural learning, students will reflect on: What does ‘celebration’ mean to me? What do I/we celebrate? What does ‘independence’ mean?

An increasing number of Cycle 2 students are keen to test their new language skills and are busy practising their speeches for the coming National Australia Indonesia Language Award (NAILA) on the theme ‘Hubungan’ (Relationships).

We wish them all luck! ‘Semoga sukses!’

Indonesian with Lyndal - Cycle 3 & Cycle 4

Indonesian classes for Cycle 3 and Cycle 4 have focused on activities that beget fluency. As fluency of Indonesian language improves for students, it generates a deeper comprehension of what they’re saying.

One such activity which Cycle 3 students have been working through, is rehearsing and re-working the script of The Emperor's New Clothes. Students have had to use critical and creative thinking as they rework the Indonesian script with translations, rehearse their scenes in groups and then perform the scenes in front of a camera. We have seen some fantastic examples of collaboration and teamwork to create a meaningful product.

Kaurna Dictionary 🖤💛❤️

The first-ever dictionary translating English into the language of Adelaide’s Kaurna people is not only protecting the language from extinction, its helping to revive the culture.

Only a few decades ago the Kaurna language was thought to be extinct. Adelaide's Kaurna people say it was only ever "sleeping". Rob Amery from the University of Adelaide has dedicated his life to reviving Kaurna. He's just published the first-ever English to Kaurna dictionary.

Maggie Dent Presentation

Montessori Schools and Centres Australia (MSCA) is hosting "From the Sandpit to Adulthood: Helping Today's Children Thrive" presented by Maggie Dent on Wednesday August 31st at 7.30pm ACST.

This is one of Maggie’s most popular topics as it is packed full of common sense and inspiration for parents and communities raising children throughout their childhoods and adolescence. Every parent wants their children to thrive – to grow up happy, healthy, strong, kind and capable of realising their full potential. In this seminar, Maggie explores the 10 keys to parenting that support this goal. She acknowledges there is no ‘perfect’ and that challenge, adversity and failure can actually help our kids grow stronger and smarter.

This event is for anyone who has or works with children.

The school has purchased TEN tickets to gift to any parent who would like to attend this session.

Please email reception@montessori.sa.edu.au if you would like a ticket - the first ten parents to do so will be emailed a free ticket!

How can you help with Quiz Night?

Do you have any items that might be suitable for our Silent Auction or  prize pool for the Quiz Night being held on Saturday 10th September?

We would love to hear from our school community and extended networks who are able to donate items, including 'big-tickets' items for our Silent Auction.

🏝 Silent Auction Items These are items which will get people bidding! Examples include: accommodation packages, signed memorabilia, gift baskets, various classes (Yoga/ Personal Training/ Pilates/ Cooking), restaurant or food vouchers, movie tickets, pamper packages, plants or gardening wares - or any other imaginative prize you can think of! Perhaps you have a specific talent which we could package up into a prize, anything from baking birthday cakes to creating an artwork - our fundraising team are a creative bunch who are more than happy to hear your idea and from there they could package up a prize.

🍿Donations of prizes - These are smaller items which are used on the night as prizes for the winning table and costume prizes. We're asking for any donated items from chocolates to wine to small vouchers.

🍾Silent Wine Auction - This year the Mystery Wine Wall  is back. The Fundraising committee is sending home a brown bottle bag to each family, if you'd like to donate a bottle of wine, please put it in the bottle bag and deliver to the  school office.

This is one of our biggest school fundraisers, any donations, suggestions or assistance is greatly appreciated by the Fundraising committee.

Please let us know in the office or email reception@montessori.sa.edu.au .

Book Week 2022

Each year since 1945 the Children's Book Council of Australia has brought children and books together across Australia through Book Week. This year Book Week is held August 20 to August 26, and while books are a hugely important part of the Montessori curriculum throughout the year, Book Week is an opportunity to spend one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators.

This year's theme is 'Dreaming with eyes open...' Our school invites students and staff at Yultiwirra to dress up as their favourite character from a book on 🌟Monday 22 August🌟.

We look forward to our beautiful Book Week installations, the Book Week parade, staff reading their favourite books to students, and in particular celebrating the new Australian books which have featured in the Book Week awards.
