FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Transformational Education…

Jesus Christ, in his life, death and resurrection is the fixed point of reference for understanding the meaning of the whole of reality.”  Goldsworthy (1991) According to Plan, page 60

For the Christian, life is viewed through the lens of a biblical worldview where we see the big picture of God’s redemptive love, culminating in the ‘good news’ of Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, ascension and enthronement in heaven as Lord of his people and of creation.

Central to this worldview is an understanding that the Bible is the unfolding narrative of God’s single, sovereign, revelation for his creation.

At Torrens Valley Christian School, our Christian values permeate the curriculum. We aim to develop a personal understanding of God and how to live in relationship with Him.

Our curriculum reflects a Christ-centred approach in all subjects ensuring that we nurture not only the academic, creative and physical sides of a student’s development, but also their personal, spiritual and moral well-being.

Over the July break, the TVCS staff will be deepening their understanding of how to embed a biblical perspective into educational practice as they attend the International Transforming Education Conference (ITEC).

Teachers, non-teaching staff, executive leaders, school directors, and parents from around our nation will converge on Adelaide for this internationally renowned conference which will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, 15-17 July, 2019.

But, not only will staff be participating in ITEC19, a large number of staff from Torrens Valley Christian School will be leading sessions.

In addition to a team of people who have been on the planning committee for the past two years (myself, Fiona Partridge and Julie Dow), our staff will be taking an active role in running workshops (Emily Brookes and Fiona Partridge), delivering an artistic interpretation of the theme Reimagining Practice (Kateryna Bowyer), leading worship (the TVCS Staff Band), leading an Arts Tour (Craig Bowyer) and planning the Opening Service on Sunday afternoon.

A group of students from the school will be taking a lead role as Ushers for the conference, welcoming delegates and assisting in the running of the program.

Another group of students have shared their thoughts on Reimagining Practice from a student viewpoint. These video vignettes will be shown throughout the Conference.

I acknowledge the contribution and involvement that TVCS staff, students, parents, Board and local churches will make to ITEC19 to the glory to God and expectantly look forward to the transformational experiences that will enable our school to re-imagine practice in teaching, supporting, leading or governing.

Yours in Christ’s service.

Work Place Practice

Over the last 2 years our Work Place Practice classes and a few other year 12 students investigate what social enterprises are and how they work to bring restoration to our broken world. Through this task they get hands on experience with one social enterprise called ‘Solar Buddy’ where they assemble solar lights and write a letter that is sent off to remote locations around the world where there is no electricity and the only source of light in their homes is burning kerosene. The side effects of this mean that children develop health issues and struggle to study once it get dark.

Through this social enterprise, thousands of children around the world have a brighter future and for the Year 12s that have been a part of this they get to hear the stories of those that this impacts and learn a little about what it takes to a help bring about restoration to a broken world through social enterprise. Last week we sent 60 of these little solar buddies to help those around the world.

Bee Hotels!

A few weeks ago we advised the Year 2 students have been busy working in the wood tech department creating some bee hotels to take home and/or place around the school surroundings.

We are pleased to advise they have finished their projects and what an amazing achievement it was! We are so proud!

Again we would like to thank you the Yr 11 and 12 students for helping them with their projects!

Secondary Career Conversations Evening (Part 2)

The final instalment in this term’s Career Conversations sessions for Secondary parents was held on Tuesday June 18th.

It was great to see so many families represented.

A keynote presentation from Mr Tony Duggan (Senior Future Student Advisor) University of Adelaide set the scene for parents to consider “jobs of the future”.  The second part of the evening featured insights and wisdom from a panel of past scholars and parents of past scholars.  Families are reminded of the wealth of resources available to both students and parents on our TVCS Careers website www.tvcscareers.com.au
