Term 3 Week 8 - 9 September 2022

Dear Parents/Carers,

Check-in Assessments

Years 3-6 students will be participating in Department of Education Check-in Assessments this term and early next term. These assessments are online and students will complete this in their class groups. These are ongoing assessments for each year. The Check-in assessments are designed to provide teachers with formative assessments that can give an indication of how students are performing and what to plan for future learning tasks. The Check-in assessment includes a reading assessment and a numeracy assessment. Each assessment consists of 40-50 multiple choice questions with approximately 50 minutes.

Zone Athletics Carnival

Almost 50 students represented CVPS at the Lansdowne Zone Athletics carnival on Monday. Our students were extremely well behaved, showed great sportsmanship and participated with enthusiasm in all their events. Congratulations to 16 of our students who will go onto the Regional Athletics carnival next Wednesday 14 September in individual events. Three of our relay teams will also attend and participate at the Regional carnival. We wish all our competitors the very best of luck.

Thank you to the staff involved (Mr Chand, Miss Jojic, Ms Marcelja, Mrs Falcone and Ms Kohn) in the organisation of the Zone Carnival as it was over two days in the end due to time constraints. 1500m and relay events were carried out on Thursday afternoon, after school, at Makepeace Oval. Thank you to parents who ensured our students could get to Makepeace Oval after school to participate in the events.

Tell Them From Me Survey

The Tell Them From Me survey is currently open for parents to participate. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact student wellbeing and engagement.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 10 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The survey can be opened in many languages. The parent survey will close on 4 November. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated. You can access the survey at: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/cvps97241555

Community Day

The Community Day Committee are hard at work getting ready for our Community Day on Wednesday 21 September. Raffle prizes have been sourced, each grade is organising their stalls, rides and activities have been booked and our Canley Cash is being prepared. Keep an eye out for special flyers informing us of all the activities we can expect for our special day. Our last Community Day was back in 2019 so I am definitely looking forward to experiencing my first Canley Vale Community Day.

Please return sold raffle tickets to our school office so they are placed in our barrel ready for the raffle to be drawn on Community Day. The number and variety of prizes that are to be raffled is amazing.

Please lock in Wednesday 21 September in your diaries – it is going to be a spectacular day!

Canley Cash for Community Day

A reminder to get your money in for your Canley Cash before Community Day. Each student was provided with an envelope and note regarding Canley Cash (CC) a few weeks ago in preparation for Community Day. A price list of items was also included so that parents have an idea of what each activity or item will cost. I would recommend that each child have between $10-$20 in Canley Cash to enjoy their day with food and activities. The ride Mega Pass is a separate cost and pre-orders for these have now closed. Mega ride passes can be purchased on the day at a booth, along with more Canley Cash, if required.

SASS Recognition Week

This week we have celebrated SASS Week. We thank all our wonderful SASS members who work at CVPS and support all our students, teaching staff and community members. Without them our school would not be the wonderful place it is.

Swimming Lessons

In Term 4 we will be participating in Swimming Lessons. This is an opportunity for our students in Years 2-6 to participate in swimming lessons for 2 weeks (Monday 7 November to Friday 18 November). We have not had this opportunity at Canley Vale since 2019. Our school is lucky to have secured dates in November when the weather is warmer to swim.

This week we have handed out envelopes to students in Years 2-6. The cost for Swimming Lessons is $65 per student. This payment covers travel to and from the pool and pool entry. The school has significantly discounted the total cost to each student as we hope that many families take up this essential opportunity. Part payment is being accepted to secure a place for your child or you can pay the full amount before the end of this term. Next term we will send more information to those students who have claimed a spot for swimming lessons.

Mrs McDaniel is Retiring

Mrs McDaniel has only 2 more weeks of teaching at Canley Vale Public School before she says farewell. We will say goodbye to her as a school at our morning assembly next Wednesday. Please feel free to come along and say goodbye.

Spelling Bee

A huge congratulations to Arthur from Year 4 who competed in the Regional Spelling Bee yesterday via Zoom. He was successful in the competition and will now go on to compete at the State final. We wish him the very best of luck.

PSSA Season 3

Season 3 of PSSA was to start today, however, rain has cancelled round 1. Next week only our cricket teams will play. Cricket will play against Fairvale at Adams Park. The basketball teams and Oz Tag teams have a bye round. They will spend their sport time in training.

Uniform

It is important that all students wear correct school uniform to school each day. If any family is experiencing financial difficulty with purchasing uniforms please speak to the CLOs, your child’s teacher or Mrs Creagh. Please make sure that all uniform items are clearly labelled with your child’s name and class.

P&C Meeting and NAPLAN information

Next week there will be a P&C meeting on Wednesday 14 September at 9am in the hall, straight after our morning assembly. Mr Papas will also come along and discuss our NAPLAN results and what the information parents and carers have received really means. Please feel free to come along and be part of our P&C.

Father’s Day

Thank you to our many parents who volunteered their time and came along and helped out on the Father’s Day stall last week. I hope our Dads all had a wonderful day last Sunday with family time and their lovely gifts from their children that were purchased from the stall.

End of Term 3

Term 3 will finish on Friday 23 September. Term 4 will start for both students and staff on Monday 10 October.

Kind regards,

Margaret Creagh

Principal

Early Learners – Animations for Families

The five-part animation series explores the learning that happens in the early years of a child's life at home and early childhood services, the important role families play in their child's learning and how this learning supports a child's lifelong educational journey.

Three of the animations in the series have been translated into 15 languages:

These animations will help families build an understanding of the importance of learning in the early years and how it supports a strong start to school.
