Kindergarten Information Evening

It was a pleasure to meet the 47 parents (some new and others returning) at the Kindergarten information evening Wednesday-week ago.

I would like to thank our Year 2 and Year 6 student leaders for their contribution to the presentation as well as the Kindergarten team for their organisation and input.

For the parents who attended, we will email a follow-up information pack soon. Kindergarten transition dates are included later in the Natter. Can I please remind everyone that it is not too early to submit enrolment forms for 2020. The sooner we have enrolment information, the more information and support we can provide for Kindergarten students and their families in the lead-up to next year.

Music Camp

Congratulations to all of our budding musicians who participated in more than just fun and games at Music Camp last month. Whilst there was much opportunity to problem solve, develop independence and connect with others, it really was all about the music. Congratulations to Felix, Chloe, Seren and Beau, for setting the standard so high, along with all of the students who attended camp-you were a pleasure to spend the weekend with and an absolute credit to your parents! Congratulations too, to Ben Swatton and all the tutors for the difference made to the student’s musical skill level, to Tracey Gowan for coordinating the weekend with the support of Mel Cogan – together they ensured everything was covered and to all the parents who gave up their time to volunteer! Thank you very much, to Newport staff - Greg Moran for making a guest appearance for games night and to Amelia Rutter who spent the weekend with the students. Thank you too, to Dee Gerlach for some of these beautiful pictures.

Year 6 Photo & PD/Health Day

On Wednesday 12 June, Year 6 students are able to dress in mufti and will be participating in a photo shoot for their Year 6 Yearbook as well as a day targeting Personal Development/Health and Transitions.

P&C Meeting Tuesday 18 June

The next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday 18 June. Join us and be a part of the conversations that matter in our school community.

Last term, at the P & C Meeting, I presented an approximate diagram of where the Newport fence will be positioned and discussed the concept of the fence and answered questions. The start-up meeting for the fence will be held this week and photos of the approximate fence line is on display in the display cabinet below the staffroom window for those interested.

Influenza A

We have had another reported case of Influenza A since last week and I anticipate there will be a few more before the flu season passes. Please consult the NSW Health Fact Sheet for specific information and please keep your child at home if he/she presents with symptoms of illness https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/influenza_factsheet.aspx

Kiss and Drop

Our staff witnessed a near miss in Queens Parade West last week, involving a car double parking to drop a student off and the child moving between another reversing vehicle. Please follow the guidelines of the kiss and drop area by parking legally, moving to the top of the queue and if need be, driving the block if a spot isn’t available. It isn’t worth injuring your own or someone else’s child.

School Photos

School photos will be taken on Thursday 27 June by Advancedlife photography. We ask that all students wear their full winter uniform.

Whilst an envelope and flyer will be distributed shortly, if possible, it is our preference that ordering be completed online to reduce administration and potential security issues related to the return of cash and envelopes on photo day.

The school won’t collect cash before photo day. All cash orders must be returned on photography day.

Orders for packages and sibling photographs can be placed securely online at www.advancedlife.com.au using the Order Code xxxxxxxx. Portrait and group package orders are due by photography day.

Should you wish to purchase a sibling photograph online, the order must be placed no later than Wednesday 26 June.

Sibling photographs will only be taken if an order has been placed.

Should you have any queries concerning school photographs or online ordering, please direct them via email to enquiries@advancedlife.com.au

Bus Passes

There are a high number of students catching buses without the correct travel pass. Below is an excerpt from the Travel NSW Student Code of Conduct:

Using bus passes (students must):

  • Show travel passes or tickets to the driver on boarding and to Authorised Revenue Protection Officers, NSW Police Officers or bus company representative when requested

  • Use the travel pass only for its intended purpose - do not lend your pass to other students or borrow a pass from them
  • Swipe or 'dip' passes in ticket readers if available when boarding
If issued with a School Opal card, always tap on when boarding and tap off when leaving the bus.

Disobeying these rules may lead to the withdrawal of bus travel passes, banning students from travelling on buses and/or police prosecution and court action.

Can I ask for your support by reminding students of their responsibility to have the correct bus pass for their travel in line with the terms and accountability as outlined in the Travel NSW Student Code of Conduct. The school will do the same with students later this week.

NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge

This is a reminder for those students who are still completing the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) and for those who have not yet started, but who would like to ‘meet the challenge’ for 2019. It is not too late to start – you have until Friday 30th August, 2019 to complete it.

The PRC is open to all students from Kindergarten to Year 9. It has four categories: K-2 – children must ‘experience’ 30 books (read either by, to or with them – teachers included), Years 3-4, Years 5-6 and Years 7-9 (these three groups read 20 books each). Of the total books for each category, students can read up to 5 books not from the official booklists (free choice). Students can read books from booklists above their category, but not from lists below (except as ‘free choice’ books).  All the details (full booklists and rules, etc) are available on the website: http://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html . You will be able to enter the books you have read into your Reading Record at the PRC website by logging on using your school username (first name.last name) and password and select ‘student reading record’ (K-2 children not sure of their user name and password should ask their teachers). Type in the PRC book ID code (get from booklists at website) or the title and author, then click ‘add’. If the book is a free choice book, click on the ‘add a choice book’ tab, type the title, select from the drop-down list, click ‘search’, then click  ‘add’. You will be able to access the PRC website in the library during second half lunch, Monday to Thursday, if you are having problems at home.

The ‘challenge’ finishes on the 30th August, 2019. So, happy reading!

Stephanie Bracey, Gine Svendsen and Rita Ericsson.

Pittwater Zone Cross Country

Last Wednesday 48 Newport students competed at the Pittwater Zone Cross Country Carnival at Narrabeen Reserve in horrible conditions. Rain, strong winds and freezing weather made it extremely testing conditions with the students digging deep and getting on with the task at hand.

All of the students ran well and should be proud of their efforts. Newport ended up finishing 3rd overall behind Avalon (2nd) and Mona Vale (1st).

Any students who finished in the top 6 will progress to the Sydney North Carnival on Friday June 21 at Gosford.

Some special mentions include:

Rio G 2nd 8/9 years boys, Jacob T 4th 10 years boys, Izak H 7th 10 years boys, Alannah P 3rd 10 years girls, Taylah F 5th 10 years girls, Marlon R 2nd 11 years boys, Will M 7th 11 years boys, Charlotte B 3rd 11 years girls, Joel L 3rd 12/13 years boys, Oliver C 4th 12/13 years boys, Jesse B 7th 12/13 years boys, Zoe M 4th 12/13 years girls.

Well done and good luck.

Boys Softball KO

Last Thursday the Boys’ Softball Knockout team travelled to the Hills District to play West Pennant Hills Public School in Round 2 of the Boys State Knockout Competition. It was an extremely close game with great fielding and batting from both teams. The scores were level at the end of regular time. The boys managed to get 3 home in the tie breaker innings and then ended the game with a triple play to win 14-11. They will now take on Normanhurst Public School in the next round.

Well done boys and good luck.

Winter PSSA Competition

We have now completed 6 rounds of the Winter PSSA Competition, last week being the bye round for Newport. This week we will play Narrabeen North. In Week 8 there will be no PSSA due to the Sydney North Cross Country Carnival in Gosford. Week 9 will be the last round of the PSSA Competition this term, no PSSA in Week 10. We will then recommence the competition in Weeks 1 Term 3.
