Principal Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Education Week

It was lovely to see many parents attending our assembly on Monday as we commenced Education Week 2022. Our students have had a great week and we look forward to sharing a special Education Week video with our wider community on Friday.

Our Open Class visits will be held in Week 6 (Friday 26th August, 2022).

Enrolments 2023

If you are aware that your child/children will not be at Wamberal Public School next year (not including our Year 6 students progressing to high school) you are encouraged to contact the school office by phone or email. This ensures more accurate, clear enrolment information to assist with planning for 2023.

Out and About…

This week, some of our Stage 2 students are involved in an excursion to Crackneck Lookout and surrounds to study the local environment. This rich learning compliments their Term 3 studies. There has also been a lot of excitement for our Kinder students through ‘Henny Penny’ as they witness the incubation, hatching and care of our baby chickens. Stage 3 have been actively engaged in Education Week Art activities using natural resources.

Have a great week,

Paul Miller

Attendance Matters

With the colder months here, we understand that children become unwell and can’t attend school. Please continue to support our goal of having 100% of absences explained by notifying the school via Skoolbag, email, phone or by responding to our automated SMS messages.

If your child has three or more consecutive days away from school, a medical certificate should be obtained and provided to the school.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

At Wamberal Public School, we are safe, respectful learners. This week, all students have been learning about being safe, respectful learners in our toilet areas and teachers are rewarding students with SRLs for demonstrating the school’s expectations of safe, respectful learner behaviour.

PBL Rewards Day

Each term our students enjoy their PBL Rewards Day with rewards for safe, respectful learner behaviour. The Term 3 PBL Rewards Menu is displayed in classrooms and a copy is available here on our school website. Keep up the great positive behaviour Wambi!

Confidentiality When Dealing with Conflicts

From time to time, your child may have conflict with another student. We encourage all students to report incidents or issues to the teacher on the day it has happened so that it can be followed up immediately. Sometimes, students may report issues to parents rather than the class teacher. If this occurs, we ask that you redirect and encourage your child to report the problem to the class teacher the following day. Some matters may require you to send an email (wamberal-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au) addressed to your child’s class teacher. Parents are asked not to approach another student to address concerns. The school will follow up any matters quickly and effectively, with issues often resolved between students and with students reporting outcomes back to their parents.

Whilst we are unable to discuss individual consequences for another child with you, be assured we remain fair and impartial ensuring any decisions made are reflective of the evidence provided by students including any witnesses. Where consequences are required, they will be consistent with the school discipline policy and Department of Education guidelines. We thank all parents for your continued support in these matters.

Transition to Kindergarten 2023

A reminder that our next information evening for Kindergarten 2023 parents is being held at school on Wednesday 24 August 2023 at 6pm.

School Tours are available for Kindergarten 2023 parents and their children. These short tours provide an opportunity for our newly enrolling Kindergarten students to visit the school with their parent, meet staff and view our facilities. Bookings can be made using this link.

Have a great week everyone.

Currently reading from this Year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia Book of the Year ListsThe Encyclopaedia of Peculiar Pairs in Nature by Sami Bayly (EVE POWNALL AWARD – nonfiction) and Winston and the Indoor Cat by Leila Rudge (EARLY CHILDHOOD AWARD).

Sami Bayly has done it again! Older students will remember Sami Bayly’s previous amazing information books (see below). Her beautiful scientific illustrations and engaging facts about wild animals are the perfect combination for curious young readers.  Recommended for readers aged 7+.

Leila Rudge describes the very different worlds of two cats who, nonetheless, manage to find common ground. Recommended for readers aged 3 - 8.

Each award category has six titles. We will explore these over the coming term. Winners will be announced in Week 6.

Chess

The Central Coast Primary Schools Chess Team Competition has finished up for 2022. This is a weekly competition that students from Year 3 to Year 6 participate in and is played throughout Term 2 and during the first few weeks of Term 3. Each week, our teams either travelled to other schools or we invited other schools to play competitive chess.

Each year, Wamberal Public School enters two teams into this event - a Rookie Team and a Championship Team. The Rookie Team is comprised of any student who shows an interest in chess and regularly attends Chess Club on Tuesday and Thursday. The Championship Team is made up of students who have played chess for several years and have a genuine interest in playing at a competitive level.

Despite it not being our most successful year, the students have been awesome and have always represented our school proudly. They have regularly attended Chess Club where they have further developed their skills and in many cases, the older students have started 'teaching' the younger students which is always sensational to see.

I would like to thank all of the students for their enthusiasm and hope they have enjoyed the experience as much as I have. I would also like to thank all the parents and carers who supported their children throughout the competition and a very special thanks to the parents and carers who were able to help transport the teams at some stage. Without your support, our kids would miss out on this fantastic experience.

Chess Club will continue to be offered every Thursday and any student from Kindergarten to Year 6 is welcome to attend. Towards the end of Term 3, early Term 4, there are usually other day chess competitions that students may be invited to participate in. Further details will be provided when more information is received.

Mr James Foyel
