Hammondville Public School Newsletter

Issue 24 - Term 3, Week 5 - Monday 19th August 2019

A Message from the Principal

Thank You

I would like to thank Mrs Waugh for relieving while I was on leave. I have had many reports of how well she took to the role and appreciate all of her hard work in ensuring the smooth running of the school over what was a busy couple of weeks at Hammondville Pubic School.

Casual Teacher Shortage

As many of you would be aware, we have had many classes split over the last few weeks. I would like to reassure you that we do our best to cover classes when our teachers are sick. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of casual teachers at the moment and it is affecting all schools across NSW. We will continue to minimise disruptions as best we can and we thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Community Charter and School Wide Expectations

Last week the Community Charter was sent home and a reminder about expected behaviour of all members of the school community was reiterated. As we all can appreciate, everyone in the school community expects to feel safe and respected at school. Please ensure that your actions in and around the school are at all times, safe and respectful to teachers, students, staff and other parents. Rude and aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated. Thank you for your understanding.

Who to Contact Form

Just a reminder that information regarding who to contact in the event of a concern or inquiry regarding Hammondville Public School went home last week. Please refer to this when you require further support at school to ensure you can have the matter addressed in a timely fashion and by the right person.

Positive Stars Week 4

I had the lovely opportunity to see many students across the school in the last week for producing excellent work, demonstrating outstanding work habits and being exceptional learners. Well done to the following students on being Positive Stars in week 4. Congratulations to the following students: Blair T and Annalise J from K Green, Josiah Y. and Lile N. from K Blue, Toby B. and Emily V. from K Yellow, Mason A. and Isabella G. from 5/6 Gold.

Comedy Night Fundraiser

Last year the P&C held a great fundraiser ’Comedy for a Cause’ and it’s back with an all new line up. This Friday in the school hall you will be able to have a night of belly aching laughs and we hope to see many of you there. Tickets are on sale from the following link for $30. www.comedyforacause.net/HPS

Tickets will also be on sale at school, cash only, at the table near the front gate from 2:30pm every afternoon this week. Child minding for school aged children is also available on the night from $5 per child or $10 a family.

Book Week 2019

We are excited to be celebrating Book Week this year with the theme ‘Reading is my Secret Power’. Thank you to Mrs Stanley for all her organisation of this Thursday’s Book Week parade. I can’t wait to see everyone’s costumes. Thank you to Holsworthy High students for visiting Kindergarten today and reading them picture books as part of Book Week 2019. I went down to visit and all students were enjoying their time together, sharing a love of stories.

Enrolment Cap

The Department of Education has introduced a new enrolment policy that will affect enrolments at Hammondville Public School. There has been an introduction of enrolment caps which means that schools cannot enrol non-local students once they have exceeded this cap. Hammondville have exceeded our enrolment cap. Please read enrolment information that follows in the newsletter.

Have a wonderful week of learning!

General Information

School Office Hours of Operation

Our school office hours are 8:30am to 3:15pm.

EFTPOS Payments can be made between 8:45am - 9:00am and 2:30pm - 3:00pm.

Student Absences

The Education Act requires that a reason is provided to the school within 5 days of the occurrence of a student absence.

If your child is absent from school please notify us via Skoolbag or drop a note/medical certificate in our secure letterbox on the outside of the office wall. Do not send absent notifications to the class teacher via Class Dojo.

Late Arrival/ Early Departure

All students who are late to school must come via the office to receive a late pass, which is then to be handed to their teacher.

If you are picking up your child early from school you must visit the office first to receive an early departure pass, which you then give to your child’s teacher.

 Toileting Accidents

If your child is prone to toileting accidents please ensure that spare underwear and school clothes are kept in their bags.

If your child does borrow clothes from our school please ensure the clothes are washed and promptly returned to the office.

Nut Free Recommendation

Due to severe allergies of some students at Hammondville Public School, we do recommend that parents not send their children to school with nut products, eg muesli bars, peanut butter, nutella etc.

P&C Payments

All payments to the P&C must be CASH ONLY and in a separate envelope to school payments.

Kindergarten Enrolments 2020

If you have a younger child who is due to start school next year and you have not yet enrolled them could you please contact the office as soon as possible. The sooner we know the number of children who are coming next year the better it is for our planning as the number of children in Kindergarten has a significant effect on the make-up of our classes and staffing across the school. Our information night for the parents of 2019 Kindergarten students is Monday 23rd September at 7pm in the school hall.

Enrolment Changes For 2020

Dear Parents/Carers,

Our school has increased enrolments to the point where we are reaching or exceeding a capacity to accommodate our students in permanent classrooms. The revised Department of Education Enrolment Policy implemented as of 22 July 2019, will have an impact on the manner in which we process non-local enrolments over coming years.

All students who reside within our local intake area will continue to be offered places at our school, however non-local enrolment applications can only be considered by schools that can accommodate new enrolments below their designated enrolment buffer level. A buffer is calculated by our school to allow the enrolment of local students who arrive throughout the year.

The impact of this requirement is that our school may not be able to enrol non-local students from 2020. To assist with the transition to this new requirement it has been agreed that non-local siblings of current students will be permitted to enrol in 2020.

As from 2021 the school may only be able to enrol local students.

The school will continue to have a non-local application process in place to prioritise any applications that may be considered exceptional circumstances or for any places that may become available if the school enrolment falls below the designated cap.

Please contact me if you wish to discuss these changes further.

Positive Behaviour for Learning News Week 5

Our whole school token tower is steadily getting higher each week with hero tokens. Well done students for showing positive behaviour for learning in the classroom and playground.

Our lesson focus for Week 5 is “Be Respectful: We put our rubbish in the bin.”

Please discuss this week’s PBL lesson focus with your child to reinforce the importance of looking after our environment and school playground by placing all our rubbish in the correct rubbish bins provided near our eating areas. If we see any rubbish that isn’t ours to be willing to pick it up and dispose of it correctly.

Premier's Sporting Challenge

This term, our school will be participating in the NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge which is a 10 week challenge for students. Award levels for the 10 week challenge reflect a daily activity time commitment. Students aged 5-18 should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day, which in the challenge equates to a gold award. Activities may include time spent in a broad range of sports and recreational pursuits during lunchtime, in school sport programs, class time, before or after school and on weekends.

Students in Years 3-6 received a logbook at the beginning of the term and they use this to record their weekly physical activity. At the end of the term students in 3-6 will be asked to hand in their log book if they achieve a Diamond level.

Students in K-2 do not receive log books for record keeping but receive a Gold award at the end of the challenge. Children should be encouraged throughout the challenge to be active daily and establish healthy habits. Students in K-2 received a fridge magnet at the beginning of the challenge.

Award Level - Daily Activity Time

Bronze - 30 minutes per day

Silver - 45 minutes per day

Gold - 60 minutes per day

Diamond - 80 minutes per day
