TERM 2 WEEK 2, 2023

A Message from the Principal

Dear parents/carers,

Welcome back to Term 2 which promises to be a busy term.

This term we have welcomed Elizabeth Holden as a permanent staff member. Elizabeth will be teaching 1R. We also welcomed Mrs Nanda back from leave.

Last week we observed ANZAC Day with a special service on Friday. Holding an ANZAC Day service is a simple way of teaching children about why we observe ANZAC Day and some of the traditions associated with the day. Thank you to the parents and community members who attended the service.

Staff started the term with a professional learning day on Monday 24.4.23. Our school joined with all other public schools across NSW to carry out professional learning focused on Aboriginal education. The professional learning supported improvement of outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students and supported teacher development in developing the knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal histories and cultures of all students. It was a very productive day and we will use some of our learning to support building our School Reconciliation Action Plan.

In Week 4 of term we will undergo an external validation process. As part of the process we have examined our practice against the School Excellence Framework. The Framework identifies quality practice across the three key domains of education – learning, teaching and leading – to help schools plan and monitor strategies for ongoing improvement. We have gathered evidence of our practice and will present this to an external panel to discuss our judgements and identified areas for improvement.

This term we will be conducting Peer Support lessons each week. In Peer Support Year 5 and 6 students lead groups of younger students in structured weekly sessions. This allows the older students to gain valuable leadership skills and younger students to build strong peer connections across the school.

Our Primary School Sports Association District Wentworthville/Seven Hills PSSA zone have advised that they have been unable to book buses to transport children to and from venues for the  competition. Unfortunately this means there will not be PSSA sports competitions this year. The zone is looking at organising a gala day each term. The difficulty of being able to book affordable buses for the competition has become a real issue and it it threatening the capacity to run the competitions each Friday.

regards

Gabrielle Buczynski

Peer Support

Pendle Hill Public School students commenced Peer Support sessions on Tuesday afternoon 2nd May 2023.

The subsequent 7 sessions will take place on Wednesday afternoons.

The whole school participates in Peer Support for 30 minutes each week. Two or three Peer leaders facilitate a small group of approximately 10 younger students, who work together through a number of structured activities.

We are working on a module called Living Positively helping us explore the concept of optimism. The module runs for 8 sessions.

The first session enabled our children to get to know everyone in the group, agreeing on how they will work well together and interact cooperatively with others. They will also begin to think about what it means to be optimistic. Peer Leaders discussed with students that optimists see the positive side of things. They expect things to turn out well and believe they have the skill and ability to make good things happen.

We encourage you to talk to your children about Peer Support every week, as it will help to reinforce the concepts learned in each session.

Why Is Attendance at School Important?

Regular attendance at school is important for students at our school to reach their full potential.

We want to do all we can to be sure your child achieves their potential and enjoys being in school. One way we can help make this happen is to be sure your child attends school each day unless they are sick, have COVID symptoms or are absent for a justified reason.

Protecting the wellbeing of our students through the reporting and monitoring of student absences is the responsibility of both parents/carers and schools. Notifying the school either before or on the day that your child is away helps us keep accurate student attendance records to support you and your child.

We know that school is the best place to learn and regular attendance means students can stay on top of their schoolwork and get the most out of their learning. If you are having trouble getting your child to school every day or on time, please talk to our school staff so we can work together, because every day counts.

Missing a day here or there may not seem like much but absences add up and can impact your child’s learning more than you think. When your child misses one day a week over a year, that’s 40 days of school, 8 weeks of lessons and 2.5 years over their school life lost.

Attendance and Absences via the Audiri (Skoolbag) App

Parents of children from Kindergarten to Year 6 must ensure their children attend school every day.  On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:-

  • being sick or having an infectious disease
  • having an unavoidable medical appointment
  • being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
  • exceptional or urgent family circumstances eg: attending a funeral

Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school as soon as possible. Absentee notes can be sent through the Skoolbag App to explain your child's absence.
