Reynella Primary School Grapevine

Term 1, Week 6 | 2023

From the Leadership Team

Our vision at Reynella Primary School is to:

“Build a culture of thinking within our community to develop successful learners, people and citizens.”

Achieving this is complex; requiring teaching staff and families to optimise opportunities for students to not only engage in, but take responsibility for their own learning. It is only through a strong partnership between home and school that students are able to progress in their learning and prepare themselves for the world beyond the school gate.

We hope to instil in our students a love of learning and enable them to see themselves as active participants in that process. This year, all of our students are working collaboratively to develop learning goals and we hope that by sharing them with you, you are empowered to have targeted conversations with them and support them to progress. By setting and evaluating their goals, students are able to take ownership of their learning and develop a sense of responsibility. In addition, they gain an understanding of how to assess their own progress, reflect and make changes where needed. This helps to instil a sense of confidence and resilience in our students, which is invaluable in their development.

In our classrooms, we provide a supportive and stimulating learning environment where students can ask questions, express ideas, engage in open dialogue and most importantly make mistakes. We want them to think critically and creatively, take risks, think outside the box and solve problems to make informed decisions. We differentiate learning opportunities so all students are provided with a pathway to success and are dedicated to supporting our students to develop the skills and competencies needed for success in a rapidly changing world.

PUPIL FREE DAY - TUESDAY MARCH 14

Staff will be engaging with a Literacy expert to further build their capacity to teach Reading; oral fluency and decoding. Oral fluency is the ability to read with accuracy, speed and expression. Another crucial area is decoding, which refers to the ability to sound out words and understand their meaning. Our primary teachers in particular have changed their approach to word study as we ensure our pedagogy reflects current research and evidence based practice.

COMMUNICATION

As we are half way into the new school year, we want to remind you of the importance of good communication protocols between home and school. It is essential for your child's learning and development that we keep interruptions to classrooms and learning activities to a minimum. We therefore ask that you refrain from calling the school on a regular basis to pass on messages to your child. We understand that there may be occasions where it is necessary to contact the school in this way, but respectfully request that you try to keep the number of such calls to a minimum.

Once the school day begins at 8.45am, teachers are limited in their capacity to check Seesaw for messages so please don’t rely on them having the time to read and respond. Teachers will check their class accounts either before or after school, but rarely beyond 4.30.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Harmony Day

Harmony Week is a cultural celebration observed annually in March in Australia. The week is dedicated to promoting and celebrating cultural diversity, inclusiveness, and respect for all people regardless of their cultural or linguistic background.

Harmony Day was first celebrated in Australia in 1999, following a successful campaign by the government to promote inclusiveness and cultural diversity. The day was initially known as Harmony Day, but in 2019, the Australian government changed the name to "National Day for Action on Cultural Diversity" to emphasize the importance of taking action to promote diversity and inclusiveness.

The week is marked by various events and activities, including cultural performances, workshops, and festivals. People are encouraged to wear orange clothing or accessories, which symbolises social harmony, and to participate in activities that promote multiculturalism and inclusiveness.  Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australians can choose to wear something orange during Harmony Week to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia. The goal of Harmony Week is to create awareness and understanding of different cultures and to foster a sense of belonging for everyone in the community, regardless of their background.

Reynella Primary School will be celebrating Harmony Week  by:

  • Creating Harmony posters which will be displayed on the school fence.
  • Wearing orange clothing to school on Thursday 24th March.
  • Dancing at recess and lunchtime discos on Thursday 24th March.

We look forward to celebrating Harmony Week as a school community.

Children's University

Children’s University

Thank you to the children who have signed up to be a part of the Children’s University program.  Tomorrow is the last day to sign up.  If you need information and sign up forms please see Carly in the office.  Children’s University is open to students in Grades 3-6.

Kind regards, Fiona Brown

Private Providers and Student Support

Every year we open our doors at Reynella Primary School to a range of Private Providers; including Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers and Speech Pathologists, to support families with accessing their child's therapy at school, rather than having to take them out of school to attend appointments. This service also supports us in developing a 'team around the child' to ensure that services, support and the education of the child is working in alignment.

This year we have had a dramatic increase in demand of Private Providers requesting to facilitate their sessions at school, and unfortunately, we have reached our capacity as we have no more available space. For now, we are unable to accommodate any new requests. We are currently exploring other ways we can accommodate these requests for service in the near future, however for any new enquiries please continue to contact Sarah Bradbury who will put names on a Waiting List.

Thank you for your understanding,

Sarah Bradbury

Woodhouse Excursion with F7 and F8

F7 and F8 classes have been looking closely at 5 Learning Assets in order to be successful learners and people. These Assets are:

·         Resilience

·         Resourcefulness

·         Self-Awareness

·         Adventurousness

·         Open-Mindedness

Our excursion to Woodhouse allowed us to really put these assets to the test! We had a great day and were able to see how important these Learning Assets are when we are faced with challenges!

“I was resilient when I tried rock climbing because I kept falling and bounced back by continuing to try.” Lachie F7

“I was open-minded on the cargo net because I collaborated and helped out my friend to get across.” Kaylee F7

“I was resourceful because I was looking for different ways to solve the problem of getting to the top of the rock climbing wall.” Bohdie F7

“I was adventurous because I was willing to try new things on Challenge Hill. At first I was unsure about a few things but I took a risk and did it anyway.” Savannah F7

“I was self-aware in the labyrinth when I stopped to think about what I should do and go.” Ashley F7

‘I was resourceful when I was rock climbing because I asked Zac to give me a boost.” Tyler F8

“I was adventurous when I was trying new things and obstacles at Woodhouse.” Bodhi F8

“I was resourceful when I used other pillars to my advantage on Cam’s Climb.” Jackson F8

“I was resilient when we were on the net when I got my foot down and I had to get my friend to tell me where the wood was. I was scared but I got through it with self- talk.” Charli K

Festival Combined Choir Rehearsal

On Thursday in Week 4, Reynella PS hosted a Combined Choir rehearsal with choir students visiting from Woodcroft Primary. This was a great opportunity for our Year 4, 5 & 6 Senior Choir students to work with Cathy who is the Deputy Musical Director of the Festival of Music. The students rehearsed songs they have been learning with Mrs McDonald and started a few of the other songs. The combined choir of 100 students sounded fantastic - a small taste of what we have to look forward to in Terms 3 and 4...

Wellbeing

Dear Students,

As we grow up, we learn that being kind to one another is essential. However, sometimes, people can be unkind or hurtful towards others. In today's newsletter, we want to discuss the difference between being mean and bullying.

Being mean is when someone is unkind or hurtful to another person once or twice. For example, if someone makes fun of your clothes or calls you a mean name, that's being mean. It can be hurtful, but it's usually a one-time thing, and the person may not continue to behave that way.

On the other hand, bullying is when someone repeatedly hurts or intimidates another person on purpose. Bullying can be physical, such as hitting or pushing, or it can be verbal, such as name-calling or spreading rumours. It can also be done online through social media or text messages. Unlike being mean, bullying is not a one-time thing, and it continues to happen over time.

It's important to understand the difference between being mean and bullying because they require different responses. If someone is being mean to you, you can tell them how their behaviour is hurtful and ask them to stop. If someone is bullying you, it's important to tell an adult or a teacher so they can help you.

Remember that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect. If you see someone being bullied, speak up and stand up for them. Together, we can create a safe and supportive environment where everyone can thrive.

Canteen News

Volunteers Needed

Our canteen staff would love to speak to any parents or grandparents who would like to consider volunteering in 2023.

Jillian (Canteen Manager) is happy to answer any questions you might have and discuss options for days and times you are available to volunteer.

They are very flexible with times: if you can only volunteer for 1 day a fortnight or month, that would be a big help to assist our staff to prepare food for our hungry students.

Updating QKR and Skoolbag

With your child starting a new class in 2023, before returning to school you will need to update your child/ren's profile in QKR and update the class and year level in Skoolbag for each of your children. This will ensure that you receive all important information for 2023.

Skoolbag is the main platform for communication at Reynella Primary School so we would love all parents and carer's to be on board.  If you need any assistance with logging on or joining the relevant groups, please come into the front office.

If you are not in the correct class and year level group you will not receive any of the important information relating to your child and their class including consent forms that are all on Skoolbag.
