Week 7 Term 1 News

NAPLAN online practise tests

To prepare for 2022 NAPLAN Online in Term 2, our Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in practise tests at the end of Term 1:

Year 5: Monday 4 April 2022 (Week 10) - Omnibus (a combination of reading, conventions of language and numeracy), Tuesday 5 April 2022 - Writing

Year 3: Wednesday 6 April 2022 (Week 10) - Omnibus only

Participation in these practise tests is to familiarise our students with the format of the tests and how to access the content online. The results of these tests are not used as a tool for assessing student ability. Another reason we participate is to gain a clear insight into the technical requirements needed to ensure students can complete the NAPLAN tests in Term 2.

While schools are not encouraged to 'teach to the test', we have found that students benefit from participation in this event and further practise can be done at home at the following link:

Harmony Day - Monday 21 March 2022

Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. It is a time to reflect on the importance of respecting each other and our differences. This year, Harmony Week - Everyone Belongs is celebrated from 21-27 of March 2022. At Engadine West PS, we will be celebrating our sense of belonging by completing a wide range of in school activities to promote the underlying themes of Harmony Week, inclusiveness and respect.

Students and staff are invited to accessorise their uniform/clothes with orange on Monday 21 March 2022. These include accessories such as orange socks, hair ties, ribbons, hats, shoe laces and ties. Students can be as creative as they like when adding to their school uniform. No make-up or hairspray please.

Any student who is interested in entering the NSW Harmony Day Poster and/or Song Writing Competition is encouraged to visit https://movingforwardtogether.org.au. The competition's theme this year is Celebrating Harmony.

Happy Harmony Week everyone!

Year 6 students moving into Year 7 in 2023

It is time to start the transition of your child from Year 6 to Year 7

Students moving into Year 7 2023 Expression of Interest forms have been sent home with students. All students in Year 6 are to return the Expression of Interest form to Engadine West PS by Friday 18 March 2022, regardless of whether they will be attending a NSW Government school in 2023.

Detailed instructions for completing the Expression of Interest are provided in the booklet accompanying the form.

How to support your child at home with PBL

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework that promotes positive behaviour across a school and helps schools develop safe and supportive learning environments.

Schools which implement the PBL framework make sure all students are explicitly taught the expected behaviours and establish clear and consistent boundaries. Staff take a proactive, preventative approach to ensure all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to be successful at school.

You can support your child at home by using the language in our school PBL matrix when talking their day at school.

If your child talks about…Tell them…
helping a friend who was upsethow great it was that they connected to their friend with empathy
completing a piece of challenging workit’s amazing what you can achieve when you persevere
a problem they had in the playground

they showed great thinking skills by finding a solution to the problem

Some students can have a ‘bad day’ just like adults can. If your child has demonstrated challenging behaviours that are not in line with our expectations, it is important to relate the behaviour to the PBL matrix.

BehaviourResponse
Calling other students namesToday you didn’t follow the school’s expectations because you were calling other children names. You did not speak to others' how you want to be spoken to.
Disrupting learning in classYou were not respecting others’ right to learn today because you were calling out to other students.
Took someone else’s canteen moneyBy taking someone else’s money, you weren’t following the expectations. At school you are expected to use your own money.

Sporting success

Well done to our very talented swimmers who competed at the Sydney East Swimming Championships at SOPAC Homebush on Monday 14 March 2022: Myka M, Zac S, Jamie N, Asia M, Cooper N, Capri McC, Kyah G, Abby B, Marli H and Jett N.

Statements of Account

Student Statements of Account including 2022 curriculum initiatives will be emailed to parents/carers next week. If you have recently changed your email address, please advise the school office and make sure to check your junk email folder. You will not receive a Statement of Account if all fees have been paid.

When paying via the link on the Statement of Account and you have fees in advance (unallocated credit) on your account, you may select USE CREDIT against owing items. Your unallocated credit may be used at any time and will roll over each year until your youngest child leaves Year 6.

If you would like to make an online payment to the Building Fund, + Add Other Item, type ‘Building Fund’ in the Description field and print your payment receipt.

Please do not hesitate to contact the school office should you require assistance.

Making a payment via the school website

In addition to making a payment via the link on your Statement of Account, school payments may be made via the Parent Online Payment (POP) portal on the Engadine West PS website under the 'Make a Payment' tab. We have been advised that new enhancements will be made to the POP page for parents and carers later this month including:
