FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members

Last Friday was half way through Term one.  Time at our school passes unbelievably quickly which I believe is due to the high number of activities that are occurring across the school.

TALKING TO YOUR SCHOOL

The relationship between the home and the school plays a very important part in a child's education.

We cannot overestimate the critical role parents play in successful learning: parents contribute much to their child's development and are among the most important influences on the way in which the child approaches learning.  Teachers are responsible for the more formal aspects of children's learning, and successful teaching builds on the home experiences of the child. This is most effective where there is an active partnership with parents.  Two-way communication is a critical factor in the partnership between parents and the school. Where a partnership exists, it is easier for parents to feel confident about the teaching and learning taking place in the classroom and to solve problems.

To support you in developing a positive relationship with us, we have attached the “Talking with My School” flyer which outlines the recommended processes for making contact with the school.  I encourage all parents, and carers to take the time to read this document.

POSITIVE STUDENT BEHAVIOUR POLICY

At our school development day last Friday our staff were engaged in a number of professional activities that included the review of our positive student behaviour policy.  We will now be working to develop a new policy that updates our processes in line with the Department of Education’s recommended guidelines.  Once this policy has been completed and endorsed by staff and our School Board we will publish it through the range of school community forums.

NEW PLAYGROUND SHADE

Our middle playground hard shade is currently being installed.  This will mean that the playground will be closed and will be open as soon as possible.  We thank you for your cooperation in keeping your children off the playground before and after school during the next week.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS – WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13.

All parents and carers will have the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress so far this year.  These interviews will occur over three days, Tuesday, March 12,  Wednesday, March 13 and Thursday, March 14.   Please contact the Front Office if you still require a time.   Helping Hands will be open if you need care of your children.

Please note that school closes at 11.00am on this day.

Kind regards

Craig Ashby

NAPLAN Online

During Week 3 and 4, Term 2 (May 14th – 24th) Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students across Australia will be participating in NAPLAN assessments in Writing, Language Conventions, Reading and Numeracy. At Bertram Primary School our students will complete all assessments, with the exception of Year 3 Writing on school iPads. By the end of 2020 it is expected students in all schools will be completing the assessments online.  The timeline for Year 3 Writing to move online is still under discussion by state and federal politicians.

NAPLAN Online tests include a range of question formats and interactive features. Students answer questions by clicking, typing and dragging; some questions include audio or interactive tools; all questions can be reviewed and answered, or flagged and returned to later.

NAPLAN Online features ‘tailored testing’ which gives students questions that are more suited to their ability – resulting in better assessment and more precise results.

Headphones are used for questions that include sound in the spelling, writing and numeracy tests. Students can listen to the writing prompt and numeracy questions being read to help understand what is required of them.

in advance of taking NAPLAN Online, students and parents are encouraged to explore the Public Demonstration Site to familiarise themselves with the types of questions and related functionalities available in the NAPLAN Online assessments.

A parent information session for Year 3 and 5 parents and caregivers will be held later in Term 1.

MOBILE DEVICE MANAGEMENT (MDM)

The Mobile Device Management (MDM) App is being uploaded to student iPads.  Parents and guardians, who have opted for their child/ren to use the MDM, will be notified by email with further details regarding the installation.

We invite you to join our Mobile Device Management system.  We believe this system will bring with it a number of improvements and supports to further extend your child's learning but also to support you as you work with your child through access and screen time issues many parents are facing on a daily basis.
