Principal Updates

Week 10 and the end of the term rolls by so quickly!

Looking back we have had so many fantastic events / activities and opportunities for students & families:

  • Engage, Eat & Explore
  • Sport Gala Days
  • Harmony Day Breakfast & celebrations
  • Sports Day
  • Young Achievers Day
  • BookFeast
  • Maths Investigations
  • Simultaneous Story Time
  • School Photos

Thanks to all in our school community once again for your ongoing support, efforts and involvement in all that happens at the Best School in the Multiverse.

This week we have 44 of our Year 5 & 6 students down in Katherine on camp. Yet another terrific experience for our children made possible through the very dedicated staff within the Alawa Primary School Community. From all accounts the campers are already having a blast and enjoyed quite a chilly first night in their tents.

This morning there was massive excitement on the oval for our youngest students with their Bikeathon - the cheers, the eagerness and the efforts with their bright and colorfully decorated bikes were a joy to hear and watch.

I hope you all have a relaxing time over the school holidays and enjoys any special trips, family events and special occasions. I will be at work the first few days and the last few days and making the most of the gorgeous NT Dry Season during the middle.

Cheers & have a terrific few weeks,

Sandy Cartwright [Principal]

Assistant Principal Update

Welcome to Week 10!

I’d like to acknowledge the hard work of all our wonderful teachers here at Alawa. It has been a very busy last few weeks with the completion of reports. All our educators have continued to work hard to ensure our students continue to thrive in such a positive learning community and should enjoy a well-earned break. The holidays are also a time for your children to rest.

We had a wonderful day today at our Preschool Bikeathon. Thankyou to Emma Connelly and the Preschool team as well as the committee for their efforts in the organisation of this event. The decorations on the bikes and scooters were fantastic and we had a fun morning riding around the track. The older children also came to watch and cheer on our students as they raced around the track. Thankyou so much to all the donations that we were given for the day.

The holidays are almost here! There are so many ideas to keep your children entertained these school holidays. Remember, to make time to rest, relax and rejuvenate, have fun together and be ready for the term ahead.

Have a safe and happy holiday!

Class Points

Muster is held at Alawa after each recess and lunch break - this gives us an opportunity for everyone to settle from playtime, share any celebrations and work on consistency of messages and expectation.

Each week we allocate class points during Muster time recognising those students who were ready and waiting to go back to class calmly and quietly after break times. The winning class from each 3 weeks will receive ice-blocks from Ms Cartwright and get to choose 5 songs that will play before our bells for the following 3 weeks.

The class with the most points in Week 9 of Term 2 was....Year 3 Block with 74 points!!!

Winner Weeks 7-9 are 3 Block with 338 points.

House Points

Students at Alawa receive raffle tickets [house points] for their attitude and behaviour in the playground and out the front of the school at the end of the day. These are then counted on a Friday along with the points for students in full uniform, wearing house shirts etc.  At the end of each term we also include the points earnt through the recycling project and water bottle checks.

In Week 9 of Term 2 Finnis was ahead of Goyder and Manton with 3829 points!!!

In the lead for the year we still have Finnis with 54285 points!!!

Attendance

Primary School Average for Week 9 Term 2: 89.69%

It is terrific having all our families back with us at school.

The class with the highest attendance for Week 9: Year 1 Bullock with 96.38%!!!

In the lead for the term...Year 3 Block with 91.33%!!! Amazing job!!!

Lates

Arriving late for school has a significant impact on your child’s learning and engagement in the education program.

There were 16 late arrivals in Transition—Year 6 in Week 9 Term 2!

For Week 9 the classes with the least lates were: Preschool Red and Blue Group, 2 Riley-Smith, 2 Ward and 5/6 Henderson with 0 lates each!!!

In the lead for the term we have....Preschool Red Group with 0 lates!

Recycling

Alawa Recycling is not only an important part of our fundraising activities here at Alawa with all proceeds going directly back into the farm, but also a vital step in helping us achieve the goal of creating a more sustainable farm and garden program.

Items can be deposited into the house bags in the back car park and  each item earns a point for each house.

Front office news

Borrowed uniforms - If your child has borrowed any uniform items this term please have them return to the front office as we are running low on supplies for those students in need.

Lost property box - our lost property box is once again over flowing with items. If your child has lost a water bottle, hat, jumper or any other item this term please have a look in the box outside the front office during school hours. All items left at the end of term will be donated or thrown out.

Kitchen news

A few busy weeks in kitchen.

On our trip to the UK we made delicious batches of scones. There was a choice of plain, fruit or savoury with all of them turning out really well. We also visited Spanish cuisine making a tortilla de patatas or potato omelette. We used lots of eggs and herbs from the farm and enjoyed making and eating these a lot.  5/6 Henderson has an extra kitchen lesson to make up for one missed earlier in the term so had a double week of making Spanish Omelettes as well as Moroccan roasted vegetables with couscous. We have been busily selling rosella jam and Ms Elsa’s ice cream and sorbets through the front office.

In the last few cooking lessons of the term, we will be visiting our final cuisine of Aussie and making meat and vegetable pies.

Defence School Mentor news

As we all know June/July is the time that Posting Orders start to filter out. If you know that your family is leaving us at the end of this year onto a new location it would be really appreciated if you could notify the school or myself.  This way I can begin to support your child through the preparation of the move. I also have some handy info sheets on how to support children through a posting. If you would like copies please let me know. Also remember that the DMFS website has some great posting info and tips too.

Enjoy the school holidays. I hope everyone has the chance to spend some relaxing and rejuvenating time with their families.

Preschool news

In Preschool, we have been learning all about road safety!

Last year Miss Milne and Miss Tamra successfully applied for a grant from Road Safety NT. This year we have been able to purchase 4 new bikes, 3 new scooters, a variety of road signs and other road safety resources. As part of the grant, we have been making road safety videos with the super talented Ms Tina Sullivan. The children acted out different scenarios and answered questions about how to stay safe when crossing the road, riding their bikes and as a passenger in a car or bus. We showcased our road safety knowledge at our spectacular Bikeathon! The children loved showing off their riding skills and beautifully decorated bikes for their friends and family. We would like to give a huge thank you to our wonderful Preschool families for their support and fundraising efforts at our Bikeathon.

Library news

Have you read – Great White Shark by Claire Saxby and Illustrated by Cindy Lane? This book has been shortlisted in the CBCA Book of the Year New Illustrator category.

Blurb - The great white shark swims on. Her tail sways side-to-side; her fins keep her balanced. She travels the fast lane where she can, cruising invisible seaways

In Great White Shark we follow a female shark on her way to warmer waters to give her pups the best chance of survival. Set in a stunning underwater world, Claire Saxby's signature poetic prose and Cindy Lane's sublime illustrations showcase the grace, majesty and power of one of the ocean’s top predators.

A narrative non fiction story this book presents the main story about a shark along with snippets of information about sharks which are related to what is happening in the story. With a reading age range of 5-8years this book will grow with your child as they listen to the story at an early age and then start to explore the information which is presented alongside as they grow. The vividly rendered pictures show what is happening throughout the story both below and at times above the water depicting not only the shark and the animals it directly interacts with but also the ocean environment they live in.

Have a fantastic break and I look forward to seeing you all back Week 1 of Term 3.

Playgroup news

Our last Playgroup for Term 2 was so much fun. We celebrated by baking scones to share with new families and friends. Inside we are having fun counting, making gardens, and constructing with the trucks and equipment. As always, we enjoy playing and creating with playdough, especially when it is bright green and smells of lime, it really brings out our imagination. Outdoors we played in the sandpit and on the play equipment. We rode tricycles together and enjoyed the road signs! We shared our scones for morning tea, and everyone agreed they were the best.

Playgroup will return in Week 2 of Term 3, 29th July. Let your friends know. I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
