Issue 21 - Term 3, Week 2 - Tuesday 30th July 2019

A Message from the Principal

I feel privileged to write the Principal’s report for our wonderful school here at Hammondville while Mrs Murray is on leave. Firstly a huge thank you to everyone for a wonderful first week back after our winter holidays. It was lovely to see everyone’s smiling faces and we have had a very settled week to begin Term 3. Term 3 is renowned for being a very busy and exciting term and here at Hammondville we have so many wonderful opportunities and activities planned for the term ahead.

Cyber Safety Parent Workshop

This Wednesday night the 31st July we have Senior Constable Rachel Kennedy coming to present a parent and carer workshop on cyber safety. It begins at 6pm in the school library and is designed to provide our community with information and positive strategies that can help protect our children from unwanted online interaction and explain ways we can encourage school aged children to safely use their devices. Constable Kennedy came to visit our Stage 2 and 3 students in term two and she comes with a wealth of knowledge and information that we are sure you will find valuable, so please join us in the library this Wednesday evening.

Congratulations to our female Rugby League players who showed wonderful skill, talent and determination at last Wednesday’s Gala Day. 100 Days of Kindergarten

Well done to Mrs Enright and the Kindergarten teachers for organising the celebrations for our 100 days of Kindergarten last Thursday. It has been fantastic to watch all of our Kindy students grow and develop and this is a special achievement in your Kindergarten journey. Thank you to our Kindergarten teachers for putting on such a great day of celebration and well done to all of our Kindy families who should be very proud of their children and the grown up way they have taken on their first 100 days of big school.

It was wonderful to hear reports about the maturity and responsibility demonstrated by these students. Thank you to Mrs Zanapalis who organised and accompanied our students.

Well done to all of our competitors who competed in yesterday’s 3-6 Athletics Carnival. You each did your best, showed positive sportsmanship and Hammondville spirit throughout our carnival.  A very big thank you to Mr Withers and Mr Hughes for all the work they put into organising such a wonderful carnival for our athletes. We look forward to celebrating all of the amazing achievements that came out of Monday’s events.

Stranger Danger

A student from a local school was recently approached by a stranger on their way home from school. Everyone is safe and well but we do encourage you to speak with your children about the importance of keeping safe when going to and from school and use it as an opportunity to discuss stranger danger with your child.

Staffing Changes For Term 3

A few staffing updates for Term 3. This term we are pleased to welcome Mrs Melissa Lyle who will be working with our stage 2 and 3 students in the Learning and Support Teacher role. Mrs Lyle has done work previously at our school and brings a range of expertise and we are very lucky to have her working with us Monday-Wednesday for the rest of 2019.  We also welcome back Mrs Jo Sorrenti who will be in the RFF role on Tuesdays and Wednesday’s in Term 3. Mrs Sorrenti has also been a regular staff member at Hammondville and has a wonderful rapport with our students.  It is my pleasure to inform the community that after the Expression of Interest process was completed Mrs Fuller and Mrs Mazloum have been successful in in gaining the role of relieving Assistant Principal for our Kindergarten team for the remainder of the school year. Mrs Fuller will be relieving Assistant Principal on Monday-Wednesday. She will remain working on 2 Yellow for Monday and Tuesday and will work in the learning support role with our kindergarten students on Wednesday. Positive Behaviour for Learning News Week 2

Welcome back to Term 3. The PBL team have been very busy looking at how our PBL rules and lessons help to contribute to a calm and productive school, both in the classroom and the playground. This term we are concentrating on explicitly teaching our weekly PBL focuses as a whole school community and using positive reinforcement through hero tokens to reward and encourage our students to try their best at Hammondville Public School. This Term our teachers and SLSOs will continue to hand out hero tokens both in the classroom and on the playground. All classrooms have a hero token container, which is taken to the fortnightly assembly with Miss Jenkins and Mr Withers organising rewards for students who have their names selected.

Our lesson focus for K-6 Week 2 is to “Be Safe: Always walk on hard surfaces”.

Spelling Bee Stage 2 Final

A big congratulations to our stage 2 finalists for competing in last week's Stage 2 Spelling Bee final. Well done to Juliette Zammit who was named as the champion and Natalie Bolger who finished in second place. Both girls will represent our school at the regional final. It was an extremely tense and close final with Natalie and Tyler Phillips competing in a playoff for the coveted runners-up position.

Debating News

The debating team has been busy training very hard over the last week. We wish all of our senior debaters the best of luck this Wednesday 31st July as they go up against the Casula Public Comets in Round 4 of the Premiers Debating Challenge.

Thanks
Mrs Zanapalis Debating Coordinator

Peer Support 2019-Term 3

This year, Hammondville Public School will be continuing the Peer Support Program. The Peer Support Program is run once a year and aims to provide an environment for developing the understandings, attitudes and skills needed to live safe and healthy lives, realise potential and contribute positively to society.

Peer Support is a whole school program. Students from Kindergarten to Year 4 are placed in small groups. There will be approximately 10 to 12 students in each small group. Year 5 and 6 students will be leaders of the group and each of our Stage 3 students have participated in special training to help them acquire and develop the necessary leadership skills.

The Peer Support Program will run on Friday mornings for 30 minutes between 10:30-11am, beginning in week 2. The focus for Peer Support this year is on the program called “Resilience-Taking Opportunities”. It is a program which focuses on building resilience and the skills, knowledge and attitudes that will enable them to cope more effectively with difficult and challenging situations.

We look forward to the Peer Support program this term and the wonderful learning and relationships our students gain during this initiative.

Stage 3 Teachers

Juniors Understanding and Mentoring Primary students

Last Thursday 8 of our Year 5 students attended Holsworthy High School to take part in the "Juniors Understanding and Mentoring Primary students" (JUMPS) program. It is a pilot program currently and the first of its kind in NSW. Year 10 students at Holsworthy High designed the program to support fellow students in developing confidence, leadership skills and resilience in new situations. It is hoped that it will be a program adopted by other high schools and primary schools to develop connections between schools and provide peer mentoring opportunities.

Our students displayed exceptional behaviour and thoroughly enjoyed the time spent getting to know their high school mentor. They represented Hammondville proudly and listened attentively. The challenge students were given was to make a raft or boat that would float while also keeping their gingerbread man dry. Students had to discuss, negotiate and listen to each other to build their boat as you can see from the images below.

We look forward to our next JUMPS session in week 4.

1500m Races for Athletics

This year the NSW PSSA is holding a 1500m race for Juniors, 11 Years and 12 Years which means our region, zone, and hence our school will be holding the same. Because this is the first year the event is being held, we have decided to hold the 1500m races on a different day to the school athletics carnival, due to time constraints but also due to students who will be competing in all events as it will become a very crowded and tiring schedule for them. We will be holding the 1500m races on Tuesday 13th August after school at 3:45 - 4:15 pm at The Ridge Athletics Track. This race will only be for competitive runners as only the top two students from each age group will be selected to represent our school at the zone carnival. Students aged 8 or 9 need to remember that they will be competing against 10 year olds so only competitive runners are encouraged to enter. Students who are competing will need to see Mr Hughes before this date to register so we know how many students will be competing. If there are any questions regarding the 1500m races do not hesitate to see Mr Hughes or Mr Withers.

For 2020, we will be looking at how best to incorporate the 1500m, whether that is being held on a separate day or during the running of the 3-6 carnival day.
