Principal's Message

Dear Community

Since the last newsletter we have had the cross country races, the last of our faction festival events. Thank you to all the parents who came down to support on the day. It was great to have the extra applause and atmosphere for our amazing students. I was really impressed with the positive attitudes with which our students approached their races. Long distance running can be a daunting prospect for some students and it was fantastic to see everyone trying their best and supporting each other with the goal of finishing with a smile and earning points for their factions.

This morning we held a sports assembly to announce our champion girls and boys as well as the winning faction. This year it was a particularly close race, but the winning faction was Parmelia.

Many of the champion girls and boys were also close competitions, with almost half of the results coming down to the cross country races. Congratulations to the following students who took home the champion medallions this year

  • Year 1: Lily and Morgan
  • Year 2: Audrey and Darcy
  • Year 3: Ines and Harry D
  • Year 4: Cobie and Finley
  • Year 5: Hilary and Drayson
  • Year 6: Nicole and Jett

Finally, I would like to thank all staff, but particularly Mr Aaron Bacci for working so hard and being so flexible and creative in making our faction festival so accessible to students and parents alike in such a mixed up year.

2021 Enrolments

It is that time of year when we start looking at our staffing and classroom structures for next year. If you are aware that you are leaving or If you know of any families who have moved into the area and are intending to enrol their children here next year, could you please let our front office staff know. This will greatly assist with our planning.

At present, it looks like we will continue to experience a high degree of growth with current numbers looking like hitting and possibly exceeding 250 students. This is a long way from where we were 4 years ago when we only catered for 103 students. Due largely to the fact that our numbers are currently fluctuating weekly, as usual, class structures and class lists will not be finalised until the beginning of next year. Please be assured though, that this is something that we put a lot of thought and care into to provide the best possible scenarios for our students.

Every now and then I get queries about why we have ‘split’ classes. Some schools choose to have them for pedagogical reasons, finding benefit in ‘looping’ students with the same teacher for two years or as means to help extend or support groups of students with the curriculum or social development. For us at Scarborough PS, we generally have split classes out of necessity.

It is rare for smaller schools to have numbers in each year level that neatly fit into straight classes. We have some year cohorts with around 15 students, some with 25, some with 35 or 40 plus. Recommended class sizes vary from 27 for Pre Primary, 24 for Years 1-3 to 32 for Years 4-6. We are tasked with fitting our students into these structures, considering their abilities and social dynamics, as well as into the physical number of classrooms that we have available to us. For these reasons, there will once again be a large number of ‘split’ classes throughout the school in 2021.

Whilst we generally don’t have a choice but to split our year levels, this is not something that is detrimental to a child’s education. Evidence based research has shown that the structures of classes have little effect on student achievement. The factors that have the biggest effect are based around teachers with effective classroom practice and this is what we focus on at Scarborough PS.

School Board Meeting

At our final School Board meeting for 2020 which is next Wednesday at 6pm, we welcome Claire Prenter as our new parent representative. Agenda items include noting the booklists and contributions and charges statements for 2021 as well as working on our next Business Plan. As with all meetings, the public are welcome to attend, so please let me know if you are interested in coming along to see what the School Board is all about.

As always, if you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact me

The Library Needs Your Help!

We have received a large number of new reading books for our students and I have a back log of book covering that I need help with. Are there any parents in our community who are able to help me cover some books over the next 2 weeks.

If you can spare an hour or two, or even 20 minutes, from 9.00am on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays to help cover books in the library that would be fantastic. Due to Corona Virus restrictions I need to limit the number of parents in the library so please advise me by emailing Leanne.daniels@education.wa.edu.au if you are able to help.

Alternatively I am more than happy for you to take a pile of books home overnight to cover if you can’t spare time to come in to the library to cover books.

Kind regards

Leanne Daniels
