Dear Parents & Community Members,

I was privileged to attend the P&C meeting on Monday evening of this week and recognise the outstanding work this group of active community members undertake.  Our school continually benefits form the support of the P&C with this continuing with funding generously provided in the following areas:

  • Winter sport uniforms – replace existing dated / worn jumpers etc. ($3200)
  • Decodable readers – support junior primary students with reading skills ($1500)
  • Maths boxes – provide accessible resource kits for all classrooms ($3600)
  • Mature trees – improve shade outside Room 11 ($600)

There are suggestions in the pipeline (including developing a nature play area for junior primary children) and these will be discussed at future meetings.  Once again, on behalf of all the students, sincere thanks to our wonderful P&C.

Our Year Three and Five students commenced NAPLAN this week with most completing the various aspects of Literacy this week.  The Numeracy assessment will be held on Monday of next week with “make up” times provided for children who may have missed out due to illness etc.  My thanks to Miss Cole for coordinating and all relevant teachers for supervision.  As in previous years, data will be returned to schools in late September and assist he school in planning for addressing needs.

While we celebrate our ability to gather for an assembly next Friday, we must continue to remain diligent in managing our health.  Please find attached to this Newsletter an update from the Department of Health in relation to current COVID protocols and in particular, how these relate to schools.  Once again, we thank the community for the support provided over this tricky time.

Use of Student (Pedestrian) Crossing

A message for all parents, carers and students from the Children’s Crossings & Road Safety Committee…

At a recent CC&RSC meeting a report concerning a periodical review of the Children’s Crossing at your school was presented. Observers noted that a number of the school students were not utilising the school’s Children’s Crossing.

Please use the crossings appropriately – the risk of an accident does not justify crossing 50 metres down the road. An additional consequence of the crossing not being used would be for the crossing being closed and the crossing guard utilised at another school.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Join the adventure!

We encourage you to join us in unlocking the wonderful world of reading for your children.  Help them to join the Premier’s Reading Challenge.  Will they fly above the clouds, dive into the ocean or jump into a rocket ship?  All students from Kindergarten to Year 10 are challenged to read 12 books by 9 September 2022.

You can help your children sign up via the website, choose their own avatar and log all the books they read over the course of the Challenge.  Weekly prizes will be awarded to students who log a book that week, with major prizes drawn when the challenge ends.

Books don’t have to be in English – children are encouraged to read books in their first language.

There are extraordinary tourism prizes to be won each week.

Sign up your children on the website to begin their magical journey.

Mother's Day in Pre-Primary

Yesterday, May 11th both Pre primary classes were so pleased to be able to welcome mums into the class again to celebrate Mother’s Day.  The mums were well pampered with massages, homemade jewellery, drawings, special craft, and delicious muffins.  Children were excited to bring their family into the classroom and even dress up for the photo booth!

Family members and the Pre primary children had a great time!

Bunnings Mother's Day Incursion

On Tuesday, May 3, Jamie and Lauren from Bunnings came to our school to help make our Mother’s Day gifts.  We planted a flower, decorated the pots and lastly added a love heart message.

The sun was shining and we had a fun morning together.  The best part was sharing time with our neighbouring class mates.  Many thanks to Jamie and Lauren who came from Bunnings to show us how to complete this wonderful gift.  Our Mums are going to be surprised!

Is your child feeling unwell?

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve in a few days.

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.

Prospective Foster Carers Needed

The Department of Communities, Child Protection are looking for prospective foster carers.

When a child or young person is taken into care, they need a safe and supportive place to stay. Foster care is often the preferred choice for such children and young people.  Foster Care means a child lives with a different family who aims to provide them with the care and support by offering a safe, secure and nurturing home.

The Joondalup Child Protection Office are holding a foster carer information session on Wednesday, May 18th at 6pm for any prospective carers.

The session will be held at 8 Davidson Terrace, Joondalup.

If you have any questions, are interested in fostering or would like more information; please email Jackie Ireland: Jackie.Ireland@communities.wa.gov.au
