MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Student leadership assembly

Students in Year 5 are busily preparing their speeches to apply for a student leader position next year. Leaders play an important role in our school as they have a unique influence on the children in the younger years and in setting a positive atmosphere across the school.

Parents are invited to a special assembly on Friday 25 November at 9:15am in the school hall where students will present their speeches. This, along with their written applications, are considered by a panel of staff to determine our leadership team for 2023. We know that every one of our Year 5 students: John, Zach, Levi, Diezel and Haloti, have everything it takes to lead our school with competence and pride.

End of year events

Please be aware of the many end-of-year events coming up. Dates are in the calendar section below. A crucial element of children’s wellbeing is a sense of belonging to their school and community. We plan a number of celebrations and activities to ensure that our students feel valued, encouraged, connected and empowered to succeed.

Presentation Day      Friday 9 December 11:45

Families are welcome to join us as we celebrate the achievements of the year, present our major school awards, induct our new student leaders and enjoy some musical performances.

Movie Day      Wednesday 14 December

Our whole school will travel to Avoca Beach Picture Theatre together to enjoy a day out at the movies.

Year 6 Farewell        Wednesday 14 December

Year 6 students and their families are invited to the Mangrove Mountain Memorial Golf Club to celebrate the end of primary schooling for our senior students.

Music Tour                Thursday 15 December

A band from Kariong Mountains High School will visit to perform a great range of music and entertain our Somersbees.

Year 6 fun day          Friday 16 December

For the students’ last day of the year, Year 6 are planning a fun-filled day of games for everyone to enjoy. On this mufti day, students will be asked to wear sun-safe clothing that is able to easily dry. We will complete the afternoon with the P&C Christmas raffle and a final farewell for the year.

Kindergarten Orientation

Today we held our second Kindergarten orientation session for our 2023 group. Miss Ellen is very lucky to have this great group of happy, clever, settled children joining Wattle next year.  Today they joined our current students for lunch and play time and showed us that they are well and truly ready for ‘big school’. Next week, we will hold our final orientation visit and a parent information session at 11:00.

Applications for entry into selective high school in 2024 opened on 16 October and close today. If you have a child in Year 5 and would like them to be part of the application process, applications must be completed online by the end of today:

Swim Scheme

Our school will be taking part in an intensive water safety and survival program. The program will take place each morning from Monday 5th – Friday 16 December at Gosford Olympic Pool. On the first day, students complete an assessment with the instructors and will be placed into groups. This is a great opportunity to build those swimming skills in preparation for our swimming carnival which will be held in early February. Full details will be sent home through Compass in the coming days.

CWA Cooking Competition

Last week our 3-6 students had the chance to take part in the annual Country Women’s Association’s cooking competition. This year’s challenge was to decorate a half dozen cupcakes in any way students chose. This certainly got the creativity flowing (along with much finger and utensil licking) with ideas including Somersbees, reindeer, cute koalas, Disney characters and some more abstract designs. The level of enthusiasm was to be commended.

Scholastic Book Club

Brochures for the final Book Club (Issue 8, 2022) were sent home last week.  Please place orders by 3pm on Wednesday 23rd November to ensure your books arrive before the end of the term.  If you have ordered books to give as Christmas presents please advise the office and we will keep them here for collection rather than sending them home with your children.

Thank you for supporting Book Club throughout the year.  You have helped our school earn reward points which we use to purchase classroom resources and books for our library.
