Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM FOUR WEEK TEN

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

PRESENTATION DAY ASSEMBLY

If you missed last Friday’s assembly it was a very special day. Not only did we celebrate and acknowledge student achievement, there were some fabulous performances from our choir, dance group and band. For those in attendance, we were treated to an incredible performance by the school’s senior band and Miss Caris Doyle. The band performed the Aretha Franklin classic “Respect” with an incredible vocal by Miss Doyle. It was a truly memorable performance. Congratulations to all award recipients - a full list has been included in this newsletter.

PICNIC DAY WASHOUT

Unfortunately picnic day was completely washed out with a stormfront that moved across the city. I would like to acknowledge the professionalism with which staff managed the conditions, ensuring the safety of all students. Everyone came back drenched and so many parents assisted by coming up to the school to collect early or with a change of clothes. Thank you for your support and understanding.

LEAVING ROZELLE

I would like to extend warm wishes to everyone who is leaving the Rozelle PS community - staff, students and families. Some leaving have been a part of the school community for a short period of time while others have been with us for many years. I wish each and everyone the very best for the future.

Should any family’s situation change and they find themselves not returning to Rozelle in 2023, please email the school before the end of the year or during the holiday rozelle-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au. This is essential as we need to account and cater for every child as we form 2023 classes.

HOLIDAY MAINTENANCE

During the school holidays, the school will be a hive of activity as essential maintenance and repairs are completed. Projects include:

  • Roofing  of the heritage building will be completed and scaffolding removed.

  • Basketball court will be resurfaced with new posts installed.

  • All eleven classrooms in Block A will have ventilation systems installed.

  • New cabling installation that will improve WiFi connectivity.

FIRST DAY BACK 2023

For students in Years 1 to 6, the first day back at school is Tuesday 31 January 2023. Students will spend the first few days in their old classes, as the school finalises enrolment numbers. It is most likely, new classes will not be formed until the end of the first week or the beginning of the second week.

During the first week, our new preschool and Kindergarten students will participate in orientation programs before their first day on Monday 6 February.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year. Your ongoing support of our school and the work we do is greatly appreciated and I look forward to another successful year in 2023. But first…. it's time for a well deserved summer break.

2023 BACK TO SCHOOL VOUCHERS

Families can now apply for the Premier’s Back to School NSW program, offering $150 worth of vouchers (3 x $50 vouchers) to help pay for school supplies including school uniforms, shoes, bags, textbooks and stationery. RECENT NEWS AND ACTIVITIES

ROZCARS FINALISTS AND WINNERS!

Below are pictures of the finalists for the 2022 Rozcars from 113 (yes, you read that right!) 113 films! With more than 257 minutes (that’s over 4 hours) of edited footage, produced by Rozelle Public School students in less than 9 weeks. What an incredible achievement!  It's important to acknowledge what ALL of the students have managed to achieve in one short term. They have worked collaboratively to meet deadlines, write scripts, plan shot lists, share equipment and resources, organise props, costumes and location shots. They've negotiated, compromised, adapted and problem solved like never before. The energy and enthusiasm for Film Making in the Library has been palpable and it has certainly made the last few weeks at Rozelle for 2022 pretty special.

We’ve seen students from across grades and stages giving up their own time, working through lunch breaks to share editing and technical knowledge. Ms Sheppard and Ms Tohver have been so incredibly impressed by how students have conducted themselves and all that they have managed to achieve in the PROCESS of Film Making in the Library. For those who didn't make it to the finals, and for those that made it to the finals, but didn't win - you have to be proud of what you and your groups have achieved, the skills you’ve developed and the mistakes and learnings you’ve made along the way. It's vital that everyone involved celebrates the process.

Special thanks to our Judges on the day:

Spike's mum - Helen Dallimore

Niamh's mum - Sarah Dingle

Harris's dad - Michael Budd

And thank you to our extraordinary last minute guest pictured with Sammy Burkhart (MC) and Mr Braiding below. Thanks to Ted's Dad - Andrew Mackie

ILF POP-UP BOOKSHOP

The Indigenous Literacy Foundation Pop-up Bookshop was a HUGE success. Thank you so much to all of the families who sent in money to support the cause. Special thanks to the Library Monitors and Ambassadors who ran the stall and worked so hard in the library all day. We raised $1,833, which included a $500 donation from Mrs Lamsa and 4 Kakadu for the ILF. The ILF is a national charity working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander remote Communities across Australia. They are Community-led, responding to requests from remote Communities for culturally relevant books, including early learning board books, resources, and programs to support Communities to create and publish their stories in languages of their choice.

CONGRATULATIONS

2023 SCHOOL LEADERS

Last week at the Presentation Day Assembly, the student leaders for 2023 were announced. The process involved student nominations, speeches and voting by the student body. Congratulations to all students who put themselves forward and may have missed out.... It’s important to remember ‘you dont need a badge to be a leader’. We have a fabulous cohort of Year 5 students moving into Year 6 who display leadership qualities everyday - kindness, respect, initiative, empathy and understanding. While I am proud of our new leadership team, I am equally proud of those students who may not have been elected into these leadership roles.

Our student leaders for 2023 are:

VICTORIA ROAD SAFETY GROUP

The Victoria Rd Safety Group continues to monitor the safety of students who cross at the intersection of Victoria Rd & Darling St to get to school.

Please sign the petition here:  https://www.gopetition.com/petitions/state-government-improve-pedestrian-safety-at-darling-st-victoria-road-now.html.

The four improvements we’re petitioning for and proposing in the submission are:

  • Expand the area of the scheduled Rozelle Public School Speed Safety Zone to incorporate the two intersections of Victoria Road / Darling Street and Victoria Road / Wellington Street.
  • Change the light filtering pattern to remove competition between pedestrians and drivers turning left onto Victoria Road.
  • Relocate the Red Light Speed Safety Camera from the intersection of Victoria Road and Evans Street to the intersection of Victoria Road and Darling Street.
  • Introduce barriers or bollards as appropriate on corner kerbs of the intersection of Victoria Road and Darling Street.
  • The submission to Transport for NSW is now fully drafted and is in the hands of the working group for feedback and finalising. If you are interested in learning more, please email johnfreeman53@hotmail.com
