Term 1 Week 4: Monday 17th February 2020

Principal's Message

Thanks to everyone for the very well supported Parent Information Evenings. There was a large parent turn out and the atmosphere across the rooms was warm and collaborative. Please remember that if you need to have a more in depth conversation with your child's teacher that can be arranged as described by the teachers at these meetings.

We have coming up on  5th March our 2021 Open Day. This is a great morning when our students leaders take prospective families on school tours. We ask that you share the Facebook item about our Open Day with your friends who have children who will be starting school next year.

At our mass to begin the school year and welcome our current Kinder students, we presented Fr Oliver with a stole which was purchased for him on behalf of our students when in Bethlehem on my recent pilgrimage. He was absolutely delighted! We also unveiled our wonderful new personalised painting of Our Lady of the Southern Cross, provided to us by Paul Newton, the original artist of this beautiful image of Mary with Jesus as a young child. The image will be displayed in our MPA purchased with the funds raised by our recent cohorts of Year 6 students over the last few years. This image is an exciting addition to our school environment as a Marian school. The image will of course hang for many years to come, signifying our community's love of a devotion to Mary Immaculate.

With appreciation for your ongoing support,

Stephen Dowd

Goal Setting

All of our students from Kinder to Year 6 are well on their way to setting and planning their  goals and targets. The teachers continue to consult with each student to develop individual learning goals in the areas of Numeracy, Literacy and Religious Education. Some students also elect to look at general learning or social goals. These goals are updated on a regular basis.

Studies have shown that goal setting motivates students to -

  • Become active participants

  • Become independent learners

  • Identify what is important to their learning

  • Achieve their full potential

Our teachers also set their own learning goals focusing on areas that they feel will assist them in catering for the needs of their students and enhancing their own development. At MIPS we are all about building student capacity to learn and to increase the confidence of our children to take on more challenging tasks.

Developing learning goals enable us to reflect on our learning. It allows us to choose where we want to go and what we wish to achieve. Goal setting assists us to develop habits that lead to success.

I encourage you to talk to your children about their goals and the plans they have constructed with their teachers enabling them the opportunity to succeed

MATHLETICS AT MIPS

Over the coming weeks each child will receive their login details for Mathletics. Mathletics is a targeted and captivating online learning resource, which is aligned to curriculum standards. It is used as part of the Numeracy program at school and for homework. Teachers set tasks for students based on the learning taking place in the classrooms and Mathletics supports and compliments this learning. Your child has take-home access to Mathletics by using any compatible computer or mobile device. They simply sign in with their school username and password.

We encourage all students to access this valuable resource on a regular basis. Please contact your child’s class teacher if you have any questions regarding the use of Mathletics.

Book Club News

We are once again participating in Scholastic Book Club. Book Club operates twice a term. Each order earns 20% in Scholastic Rewards to help purchase additional learning and literacy resources for our school, however there is never any obligation to order. Orders will be delivered to your child’s classroom approximately one week after the school order is sent to Scholastic.

Issue 1 of Scholastic Book Club was sent home last week and orders need to be placed by 9am Friday 21st  February. Unfortunately we will not be able to accept any late orders as Scholastic  have imposed an Issue 1 ordering deadline. Our school uses the LOOP (Linked Online Ordering and Payment system for parents) to process all Book Club orders. When paying by CREDIT CARD using the LOOP login to scholastic.com.au/LOOP or download the app from App store or Google play and then follow the instructions. There is no need to return paper order forms or payment receipts to school. We do not accept CASH payments or CHEQUES. Please disregard these options on Book Club order form. If you have any further questions please contact the school office on 9933 7800.

At Mary Immaculate we communicate with parents via our free Skoolbag app that is available from both the App Store and Google Play Store. Downloading our app means you immediately receive updates and reminders to your mobile phone. How good is that!
