A BOOK COMING HOME TODAY

As you know, there is still uncertainty around COVID in our community, especially the new Delta variant. So far SA has been lucky with restrictions and schools have been unaffected. Today your child will be bringing home a book and writing tools in the event a lockdown occurs that affects the start of Term 3. At this stage there is no further information and this is only precautionary. If anything happens during the holidays, a Skoolbag notice will be sent to families outlining any changes affecting the start of Term 3. When school resumes we ask you to please return your child's stationery to school with her/him.

WRITTEN REPORTS

Thank you to all families who were able to attend an interview in the last 2 weeks. Today, written reports have been sent home with students whose families did not attend an interview discussion.

HATS ON IN TERM 3

Please note that as HCEPS is a SunSmart school, students and staff are expected to wear hats from the start of Term 3. I ask that you please ensure that your child’s hat is at school from the start of the term.

LOST PROPERTY

We have a lot of unnamed lost property in front of the front office at the moment. It is really important to name all items so we can return any lost items to students. If you are missing any items, please come in and check the boxes at the start of next term.

SCHOOL SECURITY IN THE HOLIDAYS

To help prevent vandalism and other crime in the school during the holidays, we seek your support to please report any suspicious behaviour you may observe in and around the school to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or direct to Police on 131 444. I thank you in advance for doing so.

…..AND FINALLY

Please enjoy a safe and happy holiday break with your children. We look forward to seeing all students safely back for the start of Term 3 on Tuesday 20th July.

A Few Words from the Wellbeing Leader

Resource Recommendation

Raising Young People – no doubt one of the toughest but yet most rewarding things we do in our lives!

I know as a parent of 4 children myself, that sometimes I wish there was a “Parenting/Caregivers Handbook” to help me work out how to best address developmental, social and emotional issues that pop-up every now and then.

Parenting SA have come to my rescue. They have a range of Parent Easy Guides – providing a range of tips and tricks to assist in a variety of areas that we are often confronted with but despite our best intentions, can feel lost with where to start i.e. Bedwetting, Blended Families, Peer Pressure and Sibling Rivalry, just to name a few. So if you need a hand in addressing some tricky areas of raising young people, jump on to https://parenting.sa.gov.au/ and have a quick read.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTORAL CARE WORKER

“I’m bored”

Kirriliee Smout, a local child psychologist, suggests that we have 6 positive responses to a child’s comment of, “I’m bored.”

Option 1: Help the child generate new activity ideas

Brainstorm ideas with your child. It can be helpful to actually write down a list of options to make them easier to visualise.

Option 2:  Help them get involved in the start of an activity

Sometimes the idea of starting something can be daunting. When we spend 5 minutes helping to set up an activity, especially with a promise to check in to see how it is going, we are creating an environment where a child is able to challenge themselves for far longer than we are involved.

Option 3: Empathise and normalise.

Sometimes a child needs to hear that entertaining ourselves isn’t easy, and that we can be bored too.

Option 4:  Help children take activities/tasks and make them more interesting or challenging.

Encourage your child to think creatively by asking questions such as, “Could you do it differently to make it more interesting?” or “How could you turn your chores into a game?”

Option 5: Consider making starting an activity compulsory but finishing it optional

Sitting around bored while waiting for screen time to start is a common problem. Encourage your child to fill in those minutes, “Sorry mate but you can't sit there doing nothing.  You need to pick an activity that we've discussed and do it for at least x minutes, and then if you still don't want to do it at that point then you can stop.”

Option 6: Ignore it

Often children manage their boredom and find activities to do if we stay out of their way. However, the first 5 options can be an investment in decreasing the frequency of your child’s bouts of boredom.
