ZIG ZAG Public School

December 2020 Newsletter

From the Principal

It is hard to believe it is the end of another year, yet very different year (due to COVID), at Zig Zag.

It’s also the countdown for 15 of our students who are moving into the next chapter of their education. Going to the next “Big School- High School Style!”

Good Luck Girls and Boys. Give the years at High School your very best effort and enjoy the challenges and friendships you develop throughout these years.”

I’d like to dedicate this newsletter to our Year 6 students and have asked them to write their final article – as a lasting memoir of their time at Zig Zag Public School.

Year 6 you have served as great role models for our school.

Thank you for the support you have given the staff in the many roles you have undertaken throughout the year.

Zig Zag is such a special school and it is largely due to the role our older students play in supporting the younger children in our school activities.

The wonderful activities we offer on a daily basis wouldn’t be possible without the “Big Buddies” playing their part.

We are able to include the younger children because of the patience, caring and nurturing skills of our Year 6 students. I believe these skills are enhanced during your time at Zig Zag and will be a credit to you for the rest of your life.

I am always so proud to be the Principal of Zig Zag Public School.

Mrs Gillmore

On behalf of the staff …we would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Have a safe and happy holiday everyone. Enjoy this special time with your family and friends.

If you are travelling, please travel safely. We see the children back at school in 2021.

My memories by Angel

My First Day

I don't remember much of my first day but I was probably very shy and stayed with my mum most of the time.

Special Memories

One special memory is doing my speech for the leadership team and being brought down to Mrs Gillmore’s office to be told that Tori and I were Vice Captains. It was a very exciting and special moment.

People Who Have Had a Good Impact On Me

My friends have definitely made being at Zig Zag way more fun and enjoyable. The teachers have also made a good impact on me because they have taught me many things that have helped me.

Things I Treasure About Zig Zag

I treasure all my friends and definitely the memories.  I will also treasure the kind caring teachers I've had through the years here.

Things Zig Zag Did to Shape Me as a Young Person

The things I've learnt here will definitely help me in life in the future like the things we have learnt in Banqer.  Zig Zag has also taught me to respect people and how to be kind and help my friends.

My memories by Chase

My First Day at Zig Zag

I was very shy and I only stuck with Wesley and Jonah. I was excited for my first day and I was scared because I didn't know anyone. My teacher was Mrs Gilmore and she was nice and Mrs Sirisisavath was our technology teacher (I called her Mrs Sirisisavath because she said you can call me Mrs Sirisisavath or Mrs Savath).

My Special Memories

We went on a school excursion to the Waters Works Gully. We had to go on a big bush walk to get there, I liked stepping on the rock to cross the creek.   I remember when I won the John Wellings Award in Year Five.   I really liked when we did the STEAM activity where we had to build the biggest tower.

People Who Have Impacted Me

Wesley, Leo, Jonah, and Codey really made me happy and helped me enjoy Zig Zag. They were there when I needed a good friend by my side.

What I Will Treasure About Zig Zag

The things I will treasure about Zig Zag are everything except the bad things that have happened in the past.

How Zig Zag Has Helped Shape Me As a Young Person.

By everything and discipline and teachers listening to me and helping me like Miss Jade and teaching me.

My Reflection On Zig Zag - My First Day

I can remember the first day I came to Zig Zag. I was in K/1 to start with. I remember sitting next to Jonah and making a good friendship. I remember I was writing my weekend recap. I wrote about my Pop’s truck and also his backhoe. I remember drawing a picture of him fixing it. I also remember having a lot of fun being outside and not being stuck inside all day.

Favourite Things

Well, I have a few. Like the time we went to Sydney and went to Cockatoo Island. I don't know why I liked it so much, but it was so so cool to see what the jail cells looked like. The amazing facts like they used to dump bodies in Sydney Harbour and it was cool how we found out Xander and Tori had a relative who was there and they got to roll play them.

Who Has Made an Impact on Me

Probably the most has to be Jonah because he showed me around and showed me new friends like Wesley, Makayla and Tehnisha … plus more. Also, I knew him outside of school and he was lots of fun. We never really disagree and he is a very nice kid. Sometimes I get him off track.

What I Will Treasure About Zig Zag

I will love heaps about this school like all the excursions and fun activities like going to a creek to sing or going to the park to eat ice cream, or just things in the school like cooking and gardening. I love gardening and cooking. I know I've not been the best behaved for this school but I plan on fixing that up because when you have a school like this, you cannot complain.

How Zig Zag has Helped Shape Me as a Young Person

Well Zig Zag has helped me with heaps, and if I mentioned all of it I would die because I would run out of breath. What it has helped me with most is my reading because in my old school I got kicked out of reading because I was not good at it. Zig Zag did not give up on me. I will miss heaps of people here and and I will miss Oliver and Jordan very much. I will always love this school.

Thank you for all Zig Zag

My Memories by Chloe

My First Day of School

I remember the first day of school when I was in Kindergarten. I was so delighted to start school. I made lots of friends and lots of memories. All the teachers were super supportive and kind and the school felt safe, happy and everyone cared about each other. My first year of school went super fast.

My Favourite Memories

My favourite memory was going to Sydney at the start of the year for our leadership conference, we went with Mrs Savath. We got to go to Sydney because we were in the Leadership Team 2020. The conference included different speakers who told us their stories and what it’s like to be a leader. There were a lot of speakers and I remember it mostly because my friends were there and it was a great experience.

Who Has Impacted My Time at Zig Zag

The teachers have all made a difference to me. They have all been there from the first day on and have always helped me and cared for me. They have taught some lessons that I will always remember. They have always been helpful and trustworthy. My friends have also impacted me by helping me when I'm sad and I could always trust my friends to be there for me and all the kindness they show.

What I Will Treasure About Zig Zag

I will treasure how tiny the school was, but how generous the teachers and students were. The school did everything to make it a happy learning place, but not only that, they helped everyone to be good. The main thing was they helped us learn. I will also remember all the events and all the friends and classmates.

What Zig Zag Has Done to Help Shape Me as a Young Person

They have taught me how to have good behaviour and manners and how to live an everyday life. Also, they taught me everything I know today and how to be responsible, respectful and a good leader.

My First Day at Zig Zag

I remember my first day at Zig Zag, I was in year 1. I was so nervous about going to a new school. But when I first got there all the kids and the teachers were so kind, they helped me know where everything was so I didn't get lost.

These people are the people that helped me all the way through my first year, so I am really thankful for that.

Some of my Favourite Things About Zig Zag

I have so many favourite things about Zig Zag, and here are some of them. One of my favourite things about Zig Zag is that it's a small school, so you know mostly everyone.

Another thing is that there aren't lots of cars constantly driving past the school, because it's at the end of a road, so no one goes past it unless they live around here.

One more thing is that we do so many things, like we go on whole school excursions, we do whole school swimming carnivals and lots of other things that other schools don't get to do.

My Favourite Excursions

One of my favourite excursions that we went on is Broken Bay, in 2019. It was a really fun week, we did so many fun activities, and I really wish that I could go again. Some other really good excursions are every year when we watch the Lithgow High School musicals. These are my two favourite excursions from my time at Zig Zag.

My Zig Zag Reflections

Kindergarten

One of my favourite reflections was when I first started school. At first I was so nervous about leaving my Dad, but when I got used to it I loved it. School was my favourite thing in the world because this is where I learnt how to write numbers and proper sentences all the way to Year Six … right now.

Year One

My second favourite reflection at Zig Zag would be when I met Jonah, he has been my best friend for seven years and we will be best friends until we die. Zig Zag was the reason why me and Jonah met. If we didn't get to go to Zig Zag together then we would have never met each other and became the best of friends.

1/2

My third favourite reflection was when I went into Mrs Savath’s class. This is now in year 1/2, and we made a movie. We called it The Missing Class. I got to say a little part in the movie. The teacher was Rory and Tahlei who is now in high school, was the gardener who got to tell the teacher what we were doing and where we had gone.

3/4

My favourite reflection from 3/4 would have to be when we would do spelling because when we would get it wrong Mrs Wallace would tell us. Then she would send us back so we could review it and fix it, so we could get it right. Then, we would have a spelling test. We would get the word in a sentence so we would have to think harder to understand it and try and get it right. This was also the year when I missed my best friend because he went to Stewart House.

 Year 5

Year five was one of my favourite years out of it all because I went to Stewart House. I also wrote the leadership team speech and presented it. When I was in Year Five I went to Stewart House just like Jonah except for this time it wasn’t one person, me and my buddy Jack went to Stewart House together! We made so many friends then later we went to Broken Bay and it was the best.

The leadership team speech felt like one of the hardest parts of school. This is because you are saying a speech that you wrote and presenting it to the whole school. Which can feel like the scariest thing in the world, but once you do it you feel the weight lift off of your shoulders. Then you feel so happy and proud of yourself for trying.

 Year 6

Now I am in Year Six. This is when I found out that I was Sports Monitor with Chloe and I was a part of the leadership team. Now I am going into high school and can’t wait to see who the next leadership team will be. Chloe and I can give them some advice and when we are gone they will be able to have the best time of their life. Just like me and Chloe have had as sports monitors.

My memories By Victoria

My First Day of Big School

At first I was a bit shy but as soon as I saw my friends I was happy as I could be. I loved my first day. I met all of the teachers. I had so much fun. I was so glad I came here.

Year Two

I had Mrs Savath for the first time. That was the year I started cooking as a class. We made lots of yummy foods and some not so great but I ate it all. Cooking was really fun. As I got older we made more difficult foods.

Year Five

I was back in the classroom with Mrs Savath. It was a good year and then it turned into a great one. I got the note for Broken Bay. I could not wait to show my mum. Then the week of Broken Bay came. We did lots and lots of activities. My favourite thing was abseiling. It was a bit scary at first but the more you lean back the safer you feel.

Year Six

This year was the year COVID 19 hit.  Home learning was a bit hard but also easy at the same time.  After things got back to as normal as it could be we had a good time. Then in Term Four we had book week.  It was the best day of my life. We had a disco after the parade and there was bubbles and music. We made a dance circle and Mrs Savath even joined in.  I wish I could stay here forever but I can’t.  This is the best primary school in the world.  I will miss it forever.

My Memories At Zig Zag - My First Day

I was nervous about coming to a new school. I was very shy until I met Victoria Grantham. The minute I met Tori I knew we were bound to be friends. I have had the best time growing up with Zig Zag Public School. It has made me the person I am today. I met all of my teachers and I think they are a lot better than any of the other teachers I have had in my life.

Zig Zag Film Festival

I loved the film festivals. It was a time of pleasure and rejoicing. I loved all of the movies. It took a lot of effort to edit and make sure everything was perfect; the names of movies and the names of characters. But watching all the movies was fun.

Year Five

I was back with Mrs Savath in Year Five. It was fun. I got the note for Broken Bay and I was so excited to be going on such a remarkable trip. I was basically dying to get there. It was a long trip though.

There were a lot of fun activities like canoeing, archery, raft building, Abseiling and the cookout. My favourite activity was when we went canoeing and both Mrs Savath and Mrs Gillmore got in the canoe backwards with their phones and fell out. When Mrs Savth and Mrs Gillmore asked if Tehnisha and I wanted to race and I said yes … then I jumped out of the canoe thinking that they wanted a swimming race.

Year Six

This was the year Covid 19 hit we had home learning which was nice because you could kick your feet up and learn. But eventually school was allowed back and there were only a small number of children including myself. Eventually everything was kind of back to normal. Some of the restrictions at school were lifted.

Cooking Lessons

My favourite thing we have cooked would be the pastry bites with cheese, onion, tomato, pastry, and lettuce from our garden. The onion was done with a little bit of olive oil and a sprinkle of herbs. It was magnificent. Mrs Gillmore seemed to like it. She sat with Holley, Rory Tehnisha, Leo, Chase and myself.

Sport With Mr Gray

On Thursday afternoons Mr Gray takes 5/6 out to play some sports. Some of the ones we have played are dodgeball, tee-ball and this sort of a tag game. It is fun and we also make sure that it is a fair game. Playing the games with Mr Gray is really fun. I will miss the fun games.

My memories By Makayla

Kindergarten

My favourite memory from Kindergarten would be going on the excursion to Jenolan caves to sing Music Count Us In.

My other favourite memory from Kindergarten is being invited to my favourite Christmas Party that was the first time that I had one. I will always remember that time.

Year One

My favourite memory from Year One would be when Yvette came back from breaking her arm and we made her paper flowers so she could get a little bit better and she felt good.

The other memory would be when we went down to the creek with Mrs Corney and Mrs Savath and we were cleaning up the creek.

Year Two

My favourite memories from Year Two would be when we did our hand print on paper and my colour was purple.

Year Three

My favourite memories are when we had our Christmas Party and I had my shirt on. And when Mrs Savath and Mrs Wallace were talking so much that it was fun.

Year Four

When we did Music Count Us In, down at the creek and it was so nice to listen to all of the kids singing all together that is what I loved about Year Four.

Year Five

Last year was fun when we went to Broken Bay and it was fun to stay there of one full week. Olivia had to tidy her bed. It was fun to have the Year Sixes there for the fun time. I loved all of the fun things that we did at Broken Bay. I also like that when we did our Year Five Speeches.

Year Six

My favourite memories are when I found out that I was a part of the leadership team. And when I went to the orientation at Lithgow High School and it was so fun to meet new people up there and to meet your new teachers.

They are my favourite memories from when I have been at Zig Zag Public School.

My Zig Zag Highlights

I have been in this school since Puffing Billies and now I'm leaving to go to High School in a few weeks. Here are some of my favourite memories from Zig Zag.

Kindergarten

In Kindergarten I remember my sister being my buddy and helping me get settled into Zig Zag. My highlight would be the trip to Jenolan Caves to sing our yearly song with all my best friends.

Year One

My highlight of Year One was being taught by Miss Gillmore. She was my highlight of Year One. She helped me improve since the very start with my education and how I proceeded through it.

Year Two

Year Two was the year I was introduced to Mrs Savath and became best friends with Tehnisha who has been my friend since the start of school. I loved being taught by Mrs Savath she is always helping people when they're stuck and is friendly to everyone.

Year Three

Year Three was the year I was taught by Mrs Wallace. Mrs Wallace is awesome, she has a giant sense of humour and on top of that she is a really good teacher. She is kind and caring, but all teachers are great at this school.

Year Four

In Year Four I went on a big trip to Stewart House and stayed there for twelve days and it was amazing! We went and did so many cool activities like surfing, sand boarding, playing football and so many other amazing things.

Year Five

Year Five was a big year for me. I was taught by Mrs Savath again but she is a great teacher and I'm sure all the other teachers can agree. I went to Broken Bay for six days with all my class and it was amazing. I also did my speech and became the Technology Monitor.

Year Six

Year Six is the year that will make my time at Zig Zag magical because of the people I have met and the memories I have of this wonderful school. Soon I will be saying goodbye and going off to High School to continue my life.

My memories by Yvette

My Times at Zig Zag

I have been at this school for nearly as long as I can remember and I have had many good times but these ones will always stay with me.

Kindergarten

My favourite memories from Kindergarten would be going on excursions to Jenolan caves to sing Music Count Us In. When we went through all the passages and when we got to the spot where we were going to be singing in and then when we started singing … it was really beautiful which is why it has stayed with me all throughout my time here.

My other favourite memory from Kindergarten is being interviewed to find out my favourite things about Christmas. I was able to write it and say what we wanted which made it a really wonderful memory.

Year One

My favourite memory in Year One would be after I broke my arm when I came back to say hi and my class had made me heaps of paper flowers as a get well soon gift, which made me feel really happy and loved. When I came back to school everybody really looked after me and really helped me if I was needing help.

My other favourite memory is when Mrs Savath took a small group of us out to the Men’s Shed to thank them for helping us with the Authors Walk we went on a tour of it which was really amazing.

Year Two

In Year Two my favourite thing was when Mrs Savath made a class movie with us called The Missing Class it was really fun to make and edit. I really liked how she got Rory to dress up as the teacher and the face Rory pulled when she was mucking around always made me laugh.

Year Three

In Year Three my favourite memory would be when Lily and Mrs Wallace would try to see who could talk the most which always made for good entertainment.

Year Four

In year four my favourite memory is when we went to the creek for Music Count Us In. As well as the school Christmas carols when I saw some of my friends that went to High School the year before.

My other favourite memory would be when I presented my project on Halley's Comet because without Mrs Wallace I would not have started making slide shows whenever I could.

Year Five

Last year had the most memorable moments like doing my captain speech and I made lots of really good friends with the year sixes. Then when Leo came back it was nice because he was my friend in Kindergarten and now we are friends again.

Year Six

My favourite things about this year would be going to Lithgow High for the orientation day, going to the Leadership Day in Sydney, as well as getting my school captain badge.

My First Day in Year Three When I Started at Zig Zag

I made a couple of friends that are my friends to this day. I'm still friends with Olivia HJ, Izabella Udovcic and Makayla Hill. Over the past few years I've made a couple more. I remember it was like my second day and we went on an excursion. I'm not sure where we went but it was fun.

My Favourite Memory

What I loved about year 3/4/5/6 is going to cooking. In cooking we have had lots of different experiences because we get to cook all different types of food. It helps us to know how to cook at home and not just at school with everyone.

Something I Will Treasure About Zig Zag Public School

I think I will treasure a mix of everything. Having amazing teachers and a principal like Mrs Gillmore. Having a nice, calm beautiful small school with amazing students and having all the great experiences like cooking gardening and lots more.

 Excursions With Zig Zag

My favourite excursion was probably Cockatoo Island. I loved going on the ferry. I also

My Time at Zig Zag Public School

My first day I was very nervous because I didn't know many people. I made friends very quickly because I got put in 1/2 so I could make new friends.

The best day at Zig Zag was the STEAM day. We worked in our peer support groups. We made inventions that could help with things and we had challenges, like which group could build the tallest tower out of paper towel roll and each group had 46 rolls.

Mrs Gillmore and Mrs Savath have done so much to make me succeed and I'm so thankful for all that they have done for me to make me succeed.

The thing I will miss the most about Zig Zag is that it's a beautiful small school and its big playground.

The thing that Zig Zag helped me with was controlling my anger and not having an outburst when somebody annoyed me but go for a walk down the hallway.

My memories by Leo

My Primary School Years
In 2014, January 29th, I came to Zig Zag. I didn’t know that it was the start of a thrilling journey. When I began, I can still remember the excitement and adrenaline in my veins. I was going to school!! I could hardly contain myself. Each day I would feel so happy and delighted at the thought of going to school.

At the end of Term One though, I had to leave Zig Zag Public School, for I was moving houses, so I went to the little local school called Megalong Public School.

Then in Term Two, 2019, I came back to Zig Zag Public School for a week to see if I would like to come back. I did want to come back! So, at the beginning of Term Three, I returned for the rest of my primary years of school. It was amazing, getting to spend my final years at the same place I began schooling.

In Term Four, I went to Broken Bay Sport And Recreational Centre. It was an amazing experience to have enjoyed. We did cooking, archery, canoeing, fishing and so much more. When it was time to leave, I felt so upset. I loved it there. It was the coolest thing I had ever done.

Zig Zag has helped me by showing me what it is like to learn in a big class with lots of peers and friends. It has helped me to get ready for high school because it is so much bigger than the small school I had been at. Zig Zag is special because it’s still got a small school feeling, and it is so unique because it is in a rural part of town.

I’ve enjoyed getting to care for the younger kids at our school and the buddy system. It is a good way for the younger kids to have an older person looking out for them. I’ve liked being able to help care for the school equipment and helping set up the playground activities.

Now, I’m in Year Six, on the leadership team and about to go to high school. I feel sad about leaving, but it’s the start of a new part of life.

My memories by Lillian

First Day

I remember coming here on the first day of Year One. I was in 1/2/3, Mrs Savath was my teacher and she helped me get settled in for my first day at Zig Zag Public School.

One of the Best Memories

Broken Bay, I remember when we were paddling in the kayaks and let's just say some of us need a few more lessons and to not bring phones on the kayaks (Mrs Gillmore and Mrs Savath)! Broken Bay was the best place I have gone with my friends, we all connected more than ever.

People Who Have Impacted My Time Here

Mrs Savath, Makayla, Olivia, Aleesha and Jonah. They all helped me during school and out of school.

What I Will Take With Me

I will take memories with me of friendship and the pride of seeing the way Zig Zag  has grown since I came here in Year One. It's crazy how Zig Zag has grown.

I can’t believe that I'm leaving already. At the start of the year I was saying to myself “make the year go fast” but now I'm saying goodbye to everyone already.

My Thanks to Everyone

Thank you Mrs Gilmore for helping me when things went wrong. I hope you have a great life because you are a great person and I hope everything’s better in 2021.

Thank you Mrs Savath for being there for me since Year One. I hope you have a great time at Zig Zag till you leave. You were the teacher I would go to for help or if I needed to talk to someone you were there.

Thank you Mrs Wallace for a wonderful Year Four. You are so enthusiastic and funny. I hope you have a great 2021 and many years to come.

COVID supplies

As we come closer to the end of the school year, we’d like to extend our thanks to you, our parent community, for demonstrating so much resilience and patience towards the circumstances we faced together. We strived together to get the best outcomes for our students despite the pandemic and you have stayed by our side the entire time.

Thank you again.

We will be sending a COVID-safe summer pack to each student next week. The contents of the pack will help students maintain healthy hygiene practices and to stay COVID-safe during the school holidays.

Here are some quick tips to help you and your families stay COVID-safe during the school holidays:

  • Encourage your children to use their packs whenever they leave the house
  • Meet outdoors whenever possible and wear sunscreen
  • Meet in small groups.
  • Encourage good hand hygiene practices and remind your children to cough and sneeze into their elbow
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest health information by monitoring the NSW Government website https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19

P & C News

Thank you to all of the parents and community support his year.  Unfortunately we have not been able to do the level of fundraising would normally do.  We hope that in 2021 we can have a better year with fundraising and support the students.  We look forward to seeing any new family members at our meetings.
