Congratulations to Olivia who will compete at the Sydney East Regional Swimming Carnival on Tuesday.
It is with deep sadness that I must inform you that a parent at our school, Mr Mo Salim, loving father of Khalif (3/4M) and Gabriel (1/2B), died on Friday morning.
This has been a great shock to all of us. During the course of today we have advised the classes with students in Years 2 and 3 of this tragic situation. As you would understand there is tremendous upset and sadness within our whole school community.
When we advised the students, teachers and school counsellors were present to assist them with their reactions. Staff will continue to be available for students to talk to if they wish. We encourage you to engage in discussions at home with them.
Some students have reacted very visibly. Others have not. This does not mean that at some time in the future it will not affect them. Some students may experience a reaction at home. Should this occur, please consider contacting our school counsellor or your own general practitioner or community health service.
We will be monitoring the students at school during the coming weeks. This is a time when we need to support and look after each other. I have passed on to the boys’ family the deepest sympathies of our whole school community and we will be doing our best to help them through this most difficult of times.
At this stage we are not aware of the details of the funeral. The school recommends that each family makes its own decision about attendance when details are announced.

National Young Leaders Day 2019
On Monday 11 March 2019, Student Leaders and SRC Executives attended the National Young Leaders Day, accompanied by Mr Field and Mrs Burns. This was an inspiring and educational day where we were learnt from four motivating leaders, Tim Diamond, Tamsin Janu, Cate Campbell and Holly Ferling.
The first speaker of the day was Tim Diamond, the General Manager of the Cotton On Foundation. In my opinion, he was the most inspiring speaker because he showed us that anyone can make a difference. Tim Diamond talked about how he had travelled to a place in Africa called Uganda and saw how hard people’s lives were there and how different it was to our lives. The Cotton On Foundation was started in 2007 and they came up with four main pillars- Education, Health Care, Infrastructure and Sustainability to provide help to those who needed it. The Cotton On Foundation sells water, canvas bags, bracelets, mints and tissues in the Cotton On Stores. 100% of these profits go to educating children in Uganda and across the globe. Since the foundation started they have made $90 million with an average of $15 million per year.
If anyone would like to learn more about the foundation, here is the link for a short video we were shown on the day: https://www.cottononfoundation.org/our-story/#our-story-video
Tamsin Janu is another leader we were able to learn from. Tamsin loves using her imagination and has used this to write lots of books over the years. Earlier in her life she completed a degree in law, however realised that her passion was writing. She taught us that you don’t have to always do what other people tell you to do, and to follow your own path and do what you love.
The third speaker of the day was Cate Campbell. She taught us that if we want to achieve something we have to work hard for it. Cate attended her first swimming lesson at the age of nine and over the years has worked hard to achieve her ultimate goal of attending the Olympics. We were able to learn from her and know that we can achieve whatever we want if we work hard for it.
The final speaker was Holly Ferling who is girls Cricket player. Holly taught us that setbacks will always happen, you only fail if you experience a setback and choose to give up. Holly herself has had many setbacks in her career as a cricket player, most of them being injuries, but she never gave up. She also taught us to “embrace the scary but exciting.”
Thankyou Mr Field and Mrs Burns for taking us on this enjoyable day. It inspired us about leadership. We have learnt how to be encouraging leaders and look forward to bringing what we have learnt to our school.

By the Light of the Moon Opera Incursion
On Thursday 14 March, Opera Australia came to our school to perform "By the Light of the Moon" where a cat fell in love with an owl whilst they travelled overseas to find a boyfriend for the Queen of Hearts. They sang wonderful songs with their beautiful voices and had very creative costumes. There was one made out of gloves and one made out of different materials.
The performance told us that it does not matter who you love it is about the inside.
I thought it was an amazing performance and they did a great job. There were funny parts that made us all laugh. The Pianist was really impressive and played brilliant pieces.
I loved it and I am sure everyone else did too!
