Principal's Message

Dear Parents and carers,

What a wonderful term we have had so far, inside and outside the classroom.  One hundred days of Kindergarten, Incursions, Education Week, NAIDOC Week and the list goes on.

Congratulations to our debating team who have had another win, debating against Hampden Park Public School.  We are looking for to Karim from Stage 3 competing at the Regional Multicultural Speaking competition at the Arts Unit, Lewisham.  Karim will be competing against speakers from across the region from Strathfield, Berala, Campbeltown and Casula to name just a few.

A school like Punchbowl Public School strives to give the best opportunities to all our student and this involves a great deal of behind-the-scenes preparation and organisation, as well as the passion and commitment of our school staff.  Our vision of creating an inclusive, diverse and collaborative community which supports life-long learning.

All our teachers are participating in their own professional learning this term, familiarising themselves with the new Mathematics and English curriculums K-2 that will be implemented in 2023.  We are collaborating in teams and working through micro learning modules to become aware of changes in content and teaching strategies.  The new curriculum will give students more time to focus on key learning areas so that they can acquire a deeper understanding of central concepts. It will ensure students develop strong foundations for learning, life and work in a complex and fast-changing world. More information for parents can be found  on the NESA wesbite.

The NSW Department of Education have a target of ensuring all NSW public school students are at school 90% or more of the time. Currently we only have 56% of our students reaching this benchmark. We understand illness has kept many students away from school and we thank you for following the health advice. Unless your child is unwell or has a very good reason for not being at school students must be in attendance daily.

At Punchbowl Public School we continue to work closely with our school community to ensure that students are at school learning each day. You will already be aware that the school sends SMS messages for parents to request explanation of absences, class teachers are making phone calls home to follow up on non-attendance and meetings with families are being held to provide support when needed.  We have lots of work to do together to ensure that our attendance improves and that students are at school to access the learning. Please reach out by calling the office and making an appointment to speak to the class teacher.

Last week, I was privileged to visit our School as a Community Centre and see the very important work happening their for our parents and families.  The ‘Step into Work’ program was in full swing, with many mums working together to learn about transitioning into the work place.  There was a great deal of positivity and confidence in the room.  Thank you to Asenati for leading the way.

Principal

Attendance Matters

So far this term the office has recorded the following number of late arrivals per grade.

Kindergarten - 23 lates

Year 1 - 73 lates

Year 2 - 28 lates

Year 3 - 41 lates

Year 4 - 26 lates

Year 5 - 31 lates

Year 6 - 40 lates

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents. These partial absences add up and learning time is impacted. Students who arrive late miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day. Did you know that if a student is just 5 minutes late each day this adds up to 3 full days over a year?

Playground supervision begins at 8:30am (NO STUDENT is to be dropped off before 8:30am, if before school care is required contact Fun Kids who operate on the school site). The school day begins promptly at 9:00am. Let’s be on time everyday because EVERY minute counts.

Aussie of the Month - August

Early Stage 1

Kindergarten students have been busy with their learning. This term students have been practicing writing their five-star sentences. They have enjoyed sharing their sentences with each other. Students have been reflecting on their writing by making sure it makes sense, has a capital letter, finger spaces and full stop.

Have a look at some of the students' amazing writing!

K/6 Owls & K/6 Kookaburras

Kookaburras and Owls have been very busy this term engaging in a variety of sporting programs. The SPORTSPRO Dance program has allowed them to learn different styles of dance including Hip-Hop, Contemporary, and Modern Dance. We attended the Athletics Carnival and successfully participated in all track and field events. Students competed in long and high jump, shot put and relays. Kookaburras and Owls also celebrated NAIDOC Week by playing Aboriginal traditional games called ‘Gorri’ and ‘Mer ko-lap' with Stage 3 students. We began teaching our fundamental movement skills program, incorporating social skills within lesson plans. They are working towards developing their jumping, catching, kicking, balancing and throwing skills.

Stage 1

In preparation for a live musical performance, Stage 1 students are exploring and imitating sounds, pitch and rhythm patterns using movement and body percussion. Through this exploration, students are developing a greater appreciation for how musical concepts are used to support and enhance musical productions. Students are also investigating traditional and modern music and instruments. Check out these wicked dance moves!

Stage 2

Stage 2 have had a very busy start to Term 3, with a definite highlight being our science program which allows students to explore different forces with hands-on scientific investigations. Students have had a great time learning about contact forces, gravity, magnetism, and friction. Check out some of the photos from our investigations!

This term we have also celebrated NAIDOC week. We have continued to develop a greater understanding and appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. This year, we did this through both a celebration of traditional Indigenous games and an incursion that celebrated culture through dance.

Stage 3

Throughout terms 1 and 2, 13 incredibly lucky Year 6 boys have been part of the RESPECT program at Punchbowl Public school. This program aimed to teach students about domestic violence and how they can play a part in stopping it in our society. Towards the end of the program the boys wrote a song called ‘A Good foundation’ which they recently performed at the ‘Let’s Talk Event’ hosted by Bankstown Womens Health Centre. The boys performed incredibly well and represented Punchbowl Public school with pride. Congratulations to the following students: Tau, Armani, Meshal, Samuel, Walid, Assem, Abass, Alhajie, Jafaar, Omar, Khaled, Lu’ay and Hamzeh.

Community Language - Arabic

Term 3 started with excitement and enthusiasm for learning Arabic. Stage 1 students are having fun learning all about their classroom objects in English and Arabic. Students are using all their Arabic skill to explore what their classroom has to offer. It is amazing to see the effort all students put into their work. Community Language teachers provide students with opportunities to learn all about themselves through classroom digital games and resources. Have a look at the students' excellent Arabic work on writing the beginning of their names and classroom objects.

Library

Posing questions is an important skill that students need to develop. This enables them to become better at thinking, including thinking about their own learning. Questioning is also a strategy students need to use while reading to check for understanding. This process takes time, which is why daily reading habits are key to successful life-long learning. Our students are posing questions that reflect deep thinking. Here are some of what they’ve asked about prominent people throughout history:

Mary Anning

“Why didn’t Mary get credit when she found the fossils?” Rafi, 5 Victory

“Why didn’t Mary attend university when she knew more about fossils than the men?”

Moustafa, 5 Victory

Rosa Parks

“Why did black and white people segregate on the bus?” Hassan, 5 Victory

“Why were white people and black people treated differently on the buses?” Aiden, 6 Positive

Marie Curie

“How did Marie Curie discover elements?” Raida, 6Success

“I wonder if radiation/ radium can actually cure cancer?” Rayan, 5 Victory

“How did she win the Nobel Prize twice? She must have been really smart!” Mya, 6 Success

Education/Science Week

Great Science Show

We were so lucky to be able to watch The Great Science Show. I was super excited when the scientist chose me to be his helper because I want to be a scientist. I borrow lots of science books from our school library to learn more about science. Mohamed. E, 4 Loyal

We visited our Year 2 buddy class and helped them with an exciting science experiment. We added food colouring to oil and water in a bottle. We watched how the food colouring moved through the oil and water. It was so cool - it looked like rivers of colour in clear water.

We learnt that oil and water have different densities. Water is heavier than oil. The oil floats on top of the water. We all enjoyed it very much. Aditya, 4 Loyal

Driveway Safety

The driveway along the main entrance at Rossmore Ave is strictly for vehicle (staff, school transport and delivery)  access to the school carpark only.  DO NOT drop your children off in the driveway or direct them to walk through this gate . This poses a huge safety risk. Pedestrian gates are located along Rossmore Ave and on Viola St and are the ONLY way students and members of the community should be accessing the school.

KEEP collecting 10c Cans and Bottles! Little Wings Fundraiser

Little Wings is a non-profit organization that provides free, professional and safe flight and ground transport services for seriously ill children in rural and regional NSW.

Punchbowl Public School would like to invite the students, teachers and families to bring their 10c recycling bottles and cans to the school and place them in the Little Wings recycling bin which will be located outside the office.

Little Wings will receive 10c from every bottle recycled.

Lets help fuel Little Wings planes.

Thank you for contributing to 4 full bins so far this term!

Collection will continue throughout Term 3.

Road Safety

We are noticing increasingly risky behaviour of motorists outside our school particularly on Rossmore Ave which is very concerning. Please do not drop off/pick up children on the crossing, this is a NO STOPPING zone. This poses a huge safety risk. The safest place to drop off you child is along the school side of Rossmore Ave or Viola St. This is a NO PARKING zone during school times however drop off and pick up is permitted as long as you remain within 3m of your car and stay less than 2 minutes (please see attached for Driving Offences in School Zones information).

Please ensure you are speak to your child about using the crossings safely and as an adult always model safe behaviour.

  • Cross the road at a designated pedestrian crossing
  • Stop! Look! Listen! Think! when crossing the road
  • Take care whenever you cross
  • Wait for cars to stop from both directions before crossing
  • Do not double park or call out to your child from across the road
  • Drop children off on the school side of Rossmore Ave or Viola St rather than across the road

Road safety is a shared responsibility.

Mrs Eleni Kontakos - Deputy Principal, Student and Community Engagement
