Sutton Public School

Week 4 Term 4 - 8th November

Principal's Welcome

Come to our Book Fair - 13th - 15th November!

Our annual Book Fair will take place next week from Wednesday 13th November to Friday 15th November.

There are many good reasons why Mrs Doran organises our annual book fair.

  • Book fairs give children a motivation to read by offering them a wide selection of books to choose from that they can look at before they decide to buy.
  • The Book Fair is open before school to give parents and children an opportunity to pick out and read books together. This increases the likelihood that they will want to continue reading.
  • Our teachers get a chance to see books their students enjoy.
  • Our teachers get a chance to see and buy books they would like to use in the classroom.
  • Our Book Fair helps our school library. Our school receives a percentage of all fair sales to spend on books or library supplies.
  • Our book fair celebrates reading. Our school hopes to instill a love of reading that last a lifetime!

Purchases may be made by parents and students before school - from 8.30am until 9.20am.  Students may also visit the Book Fair during lunch between 11.30am – 11.50 am. Both cash and credit card sales will be available.

Nominations invited for School Captains 2020

Year 5 students who wish to nominate for the role of School Captain or Prefect are invited to write a letter of application  to begin the process of electing students to leadership roles for 2020.  It is a long standing practice of Sutton Public School to elect school leaders each year and the current procedures for doing so are attached to this newsletter to inform you of the process.  Please follow the link below.

Expectations of Students elected to Leadership Positions

  • Display exemplary behaviour at all times
  • Work cooperatively with teachers and fellow students

  • Uphold the school values
  • Uphold all classroom and school rules
  • Display good leadership skills
  • Wear full school uniform with pride
  • Conduct school assemblies
  • Be a positive role model in the classroom and playground
  • Be a positive ambassador- represent and speak publicly at community functions
  • Willingly carry out the duties for which they are responsible to the best of their ability

I ask all parents of Year 5 students to discuss the invitation to nominate for a formal leadership role with their child.  I encourage you and your child to carefully consider the points I have raised and think deeply about the expectations our school and community hold regarding this role before nominating.

Current procedures for the election of School Captains and Prefects can be found on our school website.

Letters of application should be addressed to the Principal and submitted by Friday 15th November, 2019.

White Ribbon Day Leaders Luncheon - Year 5 students

On Wednesday 13th November 2019, the Monaro Local Area Commander will once again be hosting a ‘White Ribbon Leaders Luncheon for schools in the Queanbeyan network of Public Schools.  The seminar will be run in a similar fashion to previous years with guest speakers and videos covering the delicate subject of what constitutes domestic violence and the importance of respect in every relationship.

Our school is invited to offer five Year 5 students the opportunity to attend this seminar.  Students interested in taking part are asked to return the expression of interest form, to school by Monday 11th November. The organisers hope to have a strong representation of male students attend.

Interschools Equestrian Success!

A team of 10 Sutton students entered the 2019 ACT Interschools Equestrian competition held in Bungendore between 1st -3rd November.  Our students  achieved amazing results at the  competition to become  the  overall winning primary school.

Our students achieved amazing individual results in many of the different events and several of them got champions, high point awards and runners up in several sections.

We congratulate all those who took part and share with you remarks received from a very proud Sutton parent.

"Our young people excelled themselves. They won with dignity and showed great sportsmanship. Some of them suffered disappointment but continued to compete.  To me however the most outstanding outcome was the evidence of school spirit and support for one another and equally riders from other schools."

Parent consultation evening - looking to 2020

On Wednesday 27th November, parents are invited to attend a meeting to discuss plans for class structure, school organisation and key focus areas for 2020.  The meeting will be held in the Year 5/6 classroom and begin at 6:00pm.  Please confirm your attendance by Monday 25th November through the school email, phone call or by responding via Skoolbag eform.

P&C News - Week 4, Term 4 2019

The NEXT MEETING (and last of 2019) is TERM 4, WEEK 8, THURSDAY 5th December at 7pm.

Please remember all are welcome; however if you can’t attend but would like something added to the agenda, please contact the P&C via email (suttonpublicschool@pandcaffiliate.org.au.) or on our Facebook page (@SPSPandCAssociation) to discuss.

Don’t forget we post all relevant P&C information and our events on our Facebook page, in the newsletter, on the noticeboard next to Kindergarten and via Skoolbag and all meeting minutes are available via the School website and upon request.

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR NEXT YEAR!

SUTTON COUNTRY FAIR 2020

Next term will see the P&C begin planning for our next Fair, which is to be held in Term 1 on Saturday 28th March.

The P&C are seeking a co-coordinator to work with Linda to run the Fair. This role will require a high level of commitment, however is a fun event to be involved in and is our major school fundraiser for the year.

If we can’t find anyone to take on the co-coordinator role, the Fair may not be able to run in 2020, so please consider if you can donate some time and organisational skills.

(Note: you do not have to be a member of the P&C to take on this role).

P&C TREASURER

Our current treasurer Jodi Wood will be leaving the school at the end of this year and as such, we are looking for someone to take over her role. Ideally, our new person would meet with Jodi this term to get a full rundown of how the P&C accounts and procedures are run.

This position is only required until the next Annual General Meeting early/mid 2020 unless you find the position to your liking and nominate for the next year! We are actually a pretty cool bunch of people to work with and will give you a good understanding of how our little P&C runs!

If you’re interested, please feel free to contact Jodi on 0412 140 332 or jodi_wood@bigpond.com or any of the other members of the Sutton P&C Association.

MANGOES & MURRUMBATEMAN FIELD DAYS

Next year the P&C will need some new faces to take over the Mango Fundraiser and the running of the Murrumbateman Field Days parcel pick up. If either of these fundraisers interests you, please contact the P&C for more information.

Class of the Week

Kindergarten

To finalise our science unit on 'Living things', Kindergarten went on our first excursion to the Canberra Zoo and Aquarium. We learnt about animals' habitats and what they eat. We were brave enough to hold a Corn Snake and had lots of fun feeding the otters, emus and deers - one cheeky deer even tried to chew on a Sutton School skort! We had such a great day out but we were definitely exhausted after all the exploring!
