Principal's Report

Welcome to Term 3 Week 5

Dear parents and carers,

This week is National Science Week and is also the lead up to Book Week which is celebrated in Week 6. Information about our programs for both celebrations are provided  in this newsletter.

Attendance Matters

Each morning, we have a number of students arriving late to school, with absences ranging from a few minutes to over an hour some mornings. Many of these students are regularly late, missing several minutes of class time most mornings.  Patterns of lateness can have a serious impact on your child's education and on their social participation.

All students need to be at school by 9:00 am when classes begin. Ideally, your child should arrive at around 8:45 am so they can put their bag away, and have some time to play before they start their work

If you are having difficulty getting your child ready for school in the morning, or if they are experiencing issues such as separation anxiety or school refusal please let your child's teacher know so we can put in place some support.

What to do when your child has difficulties with another student.

There have been a few occasions recently where parents and carers have had concerns about playground issues between their child and other students. If your child experiences problems with other children, please  speak with your child's teacher so that they can investigate and address what is happening.  Parents and carers are not to approach students who are not their own child when on school grounds.

National Science Week

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. Established in 1997, National Science Week provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge. It also aims to encourage an interest in science pursuits among the general public, and to encourage younger people to be fascinated by the world we live in.

This year's theme is 'Glass: More than meets the eye' to celebrate the UN-declared International Year of Glass, celebrating what the UN describes as one of the most important, versatile and transformative materials of history.

What we are doing at Rydalmere?

Early Stage 1

Kindergarten will be making stained glass windows with coloured tissue paper to understand light can also pass through translucent objects.

Stage 1

Stage 1 will draw simple pictures using a glass of water placed in front to understand how refracted light will change/distort a picture.

Stage 2

Stage 2 will create their own "suncatcher" with transparencies and highlighters to understand how light can be scattered around a room.

Stage 3

Stage 3 will be building a mini kaleidoscope with strips of acrylic mirrors to understand how light can change direction when it bumps into something.

I would like to thank Mr Quach for organising our Science Week activities. Look out for some photographs in our next newsletter.

Book Week Celebrations

Book Week is always an exciting time for students, teachers and parents. It is a time to celebrate the fantastic books that are published each year and find out which books have been awarded the Children’s Book Councils of Australia Book of the Year Award. Our school community will be celebrating Book Week with a performance, a character parade and a book fair.

Book Week performance – Tuesday 23rd August: STORY QUEST at 1:50pm This year we are very lucky to be celebrating book week with a performance from PERFORM EDUCATION who will take students on a journey through the stories from some of the CBCA shortlisted books.

COST: $8 per student

Book Week Parade under the COLA: Tuesday 23rd August at 9:20am

Each year we ask students to dress up for the day as a book character of their choice. Students may wear this costume all day. Costumes do not need to be purchased for this day by you. We encourage students to be creative and make a costume from items you already have at home. Students are asked to bring a copy of the book containing the character they are dressed-up as to show to the school.

Book Fair will be from Friday 19th August – Wednesday 24th August

All students will have the opportunity to preview the books for sale and complete a wish list. Parents and students are invited to visit the school Scholastic Book Fair to purchase books on the following dates and times:

Athletics Carnival Update

Since we cannot run a carnival this year, we are looking at the possibility of holding some of the individual events, including long jump and shot-put at school over the coming weeks. You will receive more information when arrangements are confirmed.

Mask Wearing is Encouraged at School

NSW Health are unwavering in their message that masks are an effective way of minimising the transmission of respiratory viruses and infections, and protecting our community, especially those who are at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 and flu.

As case numbers within the community continue to rise, this is a reminder that mask wearing is strongly encouraged for students, staff and visitors, particularly indoors, and that now is not the time to become complacent.

Masks continue to be required for workers who support our students who are at greater risk of serious illness should they contract COVID-19, whether they be in schools for specific purpose (SSPs), support units or mainstream classrooms.

Refer to NSW Health’s Mask wearing pageExternal link for further information. You can also go to the NSW Department of Education’s Advice for families for full details of the COVID-smart settings currently in place at our school.

Community Hub News

Dear Families,

I hope you are staying warm during these cold and windy days.

Our barista course participants went around the school to take orders last Friday morning. They were very glad to serve 15 cups of coffee. For those who missed the opportunity this week, don’t worry, the van will be at the premises for 2 more Fridays between 9:00 am to 10:30 am. Come along to buy your type of coffee.

This Wednesday, playgroup will go on a picnic to Ermington library to participate in the science week story time. If you are interested to join, please come to the library directly at 10:00 am. We will also be doing a small craft after the story.

On request, dance fitness sessions with Sophie will now start from 9:30 am on Fridays instead of 9:00 am. If you have any friends who are interested, please bring them along. Just sign in when you arrive at school. This program is free of cost and no childminding is available, but children are welcome to dance along.

For more updates please follow our face book page.

For those who haven’t met me, I am Seetha, Community Hub leader at the school. I am a good listener and eager to meet you. Feel free to join any programs or to just have a chat with me.

Cheers,

Seetha.
