Our School Values:
Would you believe that we are already at the end of Term One? Where does the time go? Thank you to all students, parents and staff for your efforts throughout what has been a very busy start to 2019. During the holidays our Year 11 students will be involved in this year's Presentation Ball at the Community Centre. When we return, we will be holding the Years 3-12 House Athletics sports day during the first week back - Friday 26th April. And, next term we will have Mr Pilgrim teaching full time in our school, which means that we have had to create a whole new timetable for secondary students. Copies of this new timetable will be available for students and parents to view on Compass so they are aware of what classes to expect on their first day back. Have a great holiday!
A competition was conducted in recent weeks to select a Nhill College Mascot as part of the new School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program. After receiving a large number of submissions, students voted last Friday to select from a shortlist of the top 3 proposals: a Kangaroo, a Ram, and a Tiger. While the results of that vote were very close, the final outcome was announced at Assemblies on Monday that our new mascot would be a Tiger. Thank you to all those students who submitted a proposal as part of the competition. Special thanks to Bailee White (Kangaroo), Anikhan Crouch (Ram) and Zara Clark (Tiger) for their creative and well written submissions. For their efforts, Zara was presented with a voucher for a new Nhill College winter jacket (valued at $60), while Bailee and Anikhan received a $20 voucher to be spent at the Library through Book Club or the next Book Fair.
Thank you to all those parents, students and staff who attended the three days of Parent Teacher Interviews this week. These interviews provide a valuable opportunity to discuss student progress and involvement in all school programs and activities.
Term One Reports were opened up for parents to access on Compass last Friday afternoon. As well as being mentioned in last week's newsletter, a separate push notification was sent out via SMS/email to all parents when the Reports were made available. As of this morning, however - and despite bringing the release date of Reports forward so they could be accessed prior to Parent Teacher Interviews - a large number of students have still not had their Reports accessed through their parent's Compass account. Any parents still experiencing difficulty accessing Compass are encouraged to read the Compass FAQ fact sheet towards the bottom of this newsletter. Alternatively, they are asked to contact Mr Shrive directly by calling the school or emailing him at shrive.joshua.w@edumail.vic.gov.au for some personalised assistance.
At a meeting earlier in the year, our College Captains made the suggestion to re-introduce the idea of Nhill College holding a school Fete. This suggestion was very positively received by students and discussions with staff and school council have also been in favour of the concept. After a great deal of discussion with students and staff, it was decided that the first Friday in November would be the best time to fit a fete into our busy school calendar. Please set aside Friday 1st November for an afternoon of fun and engaging activities that the whole family will be able to enjoy.
If you are reading this, you obviously have access to the school newsletter. However, some families have asked how grandparents or community members can stay in touch with the school when they don't have access to Compass. The answer is that anyone can access the school's newsletter through the College website: www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au. Please advise any family, friends or interested members of the wider community, that the newsletter is the main source of information from the school and that it is available to anyone who would like to read it. Spread the word!
On Wednesday the Wellbeing Team provided a class picnic to 9X in celebration of their successful classroom door display. The door confidently represented the idea that the future of Nhill College students is "so bright, they have to wear shades."
The Year 12 cohort also joined the picnic as the Wellbeing Team believed their door deserved a special mention as it encompassed the idea that "the sky is the limit" for all Nhill College students.
Thank you to all 7-12 form groups for embracing and entering the challenge. We look forward to issuing new and exciting ideas next term.
Wellbeing Team

On Thursday the 28th of March, Year 1/2 students spent the evening sleeping over in the Nhill College stadium for their camp. We started off by setting up our tents, before visiting Avonlea and Iona to perform a song. After that, we visited the Pinball museum where we were able to have a go at new and old pinball games. After dinner, we played a variety of minute to win it games, then had a visit from some furry and not so furry creatures (Yes, there were snakes!!) All the students were well behaved and had a wonderful night!

The college has been busy preparing for the Yr 3–12 Athletics day on Friday the 26th April. Please place the date in your calendar as it is in the first week back of Term 2. We would like to invite all parents, family members and friends to join us on the day.
The F-2 Aths Fun Afternoon will be held on the 10th May 2pm -3.15pm. We would like to invite all parents, family and friends to this amazing afternoon of fun. See you all there.
I would like to wish all our students and families a safe Easter holiday period. See you all next term.
All Form Captains and SRC Representatives are reminded that they are expected to attend the Nhill community ANZAC Day service on Thursday 25th April (first week Term 1). All Nhill College students who would like to attend are also more than welcome to be part of our group.
The service is scheduled to begin at 10am and students attending should meet the group at Goldsworthy Park, near the Information Centre, at 9.45am. All students should wear full school uniform. We will march as a group to the Community Centre. Students are encouraged to attend the service which is usually concluded by 12 o’clock (students may just do the march and then leave if they wish).
This year Nhill College is going to be celebrating Harmony Day on the 17th of May. This day is marked by people coming together and participating in local activities. It is about community participation, inclusiveness, celebrating diversity, respect and belonging. To celebrate this day we are joining up with our neighbouring school, Kaniva College, to come together for some sports and a BBQ. If students are interested in attending they can sign up for Volleyball, Super 8s Cricket, Ultimate Frisbee or Basketball. There will also be an option to sign up as a volunteer for the day if students wish to still be involved but not do any sports. Signup sheets will be going up in the coming weeks.
Regular attendance at school is extremely important to the social and academic development of all children. It is a Department requirement that parents contact the school each day their child is absent. Any unauthorised absences currently trigger an SMS via Compass at 9.45am each morning to notify parents that their child is not at school. If a parent receives such an SMS, it is requested that they contact the school as soon as possible to provide a reason for their child’s absence. This can be done by entering an explanation directly onto Compass via the app installed on your phone, or by calling the College on 53912111. (Please note that the Skoolbag app is no longer being used by the school to communicate messages.) In an effort to further reduce the rate of unauthorised absences being recorded at Nhill College, office staff will follow up with a phone call if a response to the SMS has not been received by 10.45am on the day of each absence.
This Term in History the year 7’s have been learning about Ancient Egypt. The students learnt about the mummification process used on Pharaohs and common people of the Ancient Egyptian times. The year 7’s had the opportunity to put their learning into practice by having a race to see who could wrap the best mummy using toilet paper. The chosen mummies were Harry, Corey, Isaac and Eh Doh. The students had a great time putting their learning into action and applying the mummification process to their fellow classmates.
AIE would like to invite interested Year 10-12 students to their April Industry Experience Day on Wednesday 17th April from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. The AIE Industry Experience Days are a great opportunity to learn about the local and international game development, 3D animation and visual effects industries. Students will get the opportunity to learn about the different pathways to get into the industry and will be able to get creative in practical workshops using industry-standard 3D animation and game development tools. The sessions are run by industry professionals who have worked on blockbuster games and films. Everything is provided for students to participate in the hands-on workshops and all will be using the same software that is used in the industry. If you are interested, you can register here, or see Mrs Sampson for details.
Deakin University is providing an opportunity for Year 10 students to complete a week of work experience within their Screen and Design department. The weeks available are:
Melbourne Burwood Campus: 17th-21st June (2nd last week of Term 2)
Geelong Waterfront Campus: 30th September – 4th October (during Term 3 holidays)
Throughout the week students would be exposed to 2D animation techniques, exploring the creative use of digital technology, learning how to work with green-screen technologies and ultimately develop and create their own brand for their portfolio.
Each school is able to nominate a maximum of 2 students, and only 20 spaces are available so if you are interested please see Mrs Sampson as soon as possible.

If your child has any of the above medical conditions it is a requirement that you provide the school with an updated Management Plan each year. Management plans need to be signed by the child's medical practitioner or specialist and a recent photo of the child attached to the plan before being provided to the school.
We would appreciate parents assistance in this area so we can follow your childs action plan if to ensure the most up to date treatment is provided should the need arise.
Please find below a link to choose for access to the above form/s.

A list of latest model computers available from Nhill Bi-Rite and Wimmera Office Equipment has been included in this week’s newsletter for the consideration of families interested in a BYOD. These lists contain a range of devices that will be able to support student learning – at home and at school – over the next few years. A reminder that all students have free access to Microsoft Office, as well as some Adobe programs through their school subscription. For families considering a BYOD, it is worth noting that electronic resources are being used more and more frequently in classes, with the College subsidising Edrolo subscriptions for all VCE students, while Maths Pathways and Education Perfect resources are also being used more extensively across Years 7-10 this year. If you have any questions related to the College’s BYOD program, feel free to contact Mr Shrive. The BYOD product lists can be downloaded from the link below, as well as being available from the College website. Printed copies can be obtained from Mr Shrive on request.

From 2019 Nhill College will no longer be using the SkoolBag app. This means all notifications and absent notes will happen within Compass. We encourage parents to logon to Compass to approve any absences your child may have, or to lodge an absence in advance if the dates and times are known. The following is a reminder from the Compass FAQ Sheet that went home with all students last year. The FAQ Sheet can also be found on our website.
How do I submit an absence note?
If using a computer, go to https://nhillcollege-vic.compass.education/ then view the student’s profile, select “Attendance” and then go to “Notes/Approvals”. Click on “Add Attendance Note” to submit a note via Compass.
If you are using the app, go to the student’s profile, “Approvals” tab, and then click the plus button to add a note. You can submit notes ahead of time if you know your child will be absent in the future.
From 2019 parents will be able to complete bus notes on our website at http://www.nhillcollege.vic.edu.au/. This will not require the app to access. Alternatively, parents will be able to ring the College or email nhill.co@edumail.vic.gov.au
