Principal's Report

Dear Families,

Welcome to term 4. There’s a buzz in the air as we begin wrapping up the year.

Night on the Green

Wow, what a night! To say this night was a success is an understatement. For the families who attended, I think our common thought would be that the night was a fun filled experience for all. I’m not sure how I can possibly say thank you and pass on our gratitude to the Parent and Friends committee who spent hours and hours organising the evening. Alisha Forrest was the driving force behind this very successful school community event. With her dedicated, (very large group of enthusiastic parents), they turned an idea into a phenomenal night of fun. I cannot say thank you enough. Apart from the fact this was also a fundraising activity for the school, it was more about providing our school community with the opportunity to come together, enjoy one another’s company and letting the kids have the freedom to have fun with their friends in a safe environment. Thank you to everyone who contributed in making this event one of the most enjoyable fundraisers of all time. The P&F will determine how the funds raised will be used.

Athletics

Congratulations to the students who travelled to Epping to compete in the regional athletic sports. According to the feedback from the kids, MPS “smashed” the relay races winning 5 of the 6 races. It must be our high altitude mountain air that provides oxygen to those red blood cells (the Kenyans better start watching their backs!).  Most importantly, our athletes represented their school and district outstandingly. This Friday, the students who achieved first and second placings, make their way towards Albury. At each stage, the competition steps up. Good luck to the athletes and most importantly make your school, district and region proud of your sportsmanship. Many thanks to Sally Kelly (PE teacher) and the parents for accompanying the students.

New Building

Our building is only a few weeks from being handed over to the school. The landscaping is being completed and in the next two weeks, we will see spray painting of the quadrangle. Grass is being sown so there will continue to be areas roped off, however the wait will be worth it. Once we have the official hand over, we will open the building so students and parents may have a look.

Prep students for 2020

If you have a prep student beginning in 2020 and you have not yet officially enrolled them, please do so as soon as possible. We are 3 prep students from having a fourth prep class. Another grade means employing another teacher, which means we will need to advertise and have interviews. This process takes several weeks so it’s very important that we have this information within the next week. Please pass this information on to any family who intend to start their child in 2020 and have not completed the enrolment process.

Cheerio and enjoy your next fortnight.

Julie

Night on the Green

The weather held off and the afternoon and evening drew a huge crowd to the showgrounds to enjoy all the 'Night on the Green' had to offer. Including food vans, whip cracking, music, singing, face painting, silent auction, art auction, glow stix, candy bar and of course the movie at sundown.

There was plenty of positive feedback from the night and the Parents and Friends team of Alisha Forrest, Dave and Carly Clifton, Kathryn Hewitt, Kate Day, Kassy Thomas, Nicole Horneman, Keira McDonough, Vikki Vanderhoeven, Jane Jordan, Jamie Buscombe and Fiona Wareham worked hard to ensure everyone enjoyed themselves.

THANK YOU to all the sponsors, helpers, volunteers and everyone else who contributed to the night, it was a huge success raising more than ten thousand dollars for our school.

Night on The Green Photos

Get to know your MPS Staff: Holly Nicholson - French Teacher

Place of Birth: St George’s Hospital in Kew on the 21st March

Grew up: Northern-Eastern suburbs of Melbourne and attended Greenhills Primary School in Greensborough from Prep to Grade 3 before moving to Bendigo when I was 9 years old. I spent the rest of my childhood living in the Bendigo suburb of Kangaroo Flat. I finished my primary schooling at Maple Street Primary School then attended Kangaroo Flat Secondary College, followed by Bendigo Senior Secondary College. I left home at the age of 18 and moved back to Melbourne to go to university.

Family: I have one older brother, Joel, who lives in Bendigo with his wife and three beautiful children. I love spending time with my niece and two nephews. My parents also still live in Bendigo. I now live with my fiancé, Chris, who works in Benalla as an engineer. We will be getting married in April 2020.

Education: Monash University in Clayton where I completed a Bachelor of Languages with a double major in Linguistics and French and a minor in Spanish. Part of this degree I completed in Lyon, France at Jean Moulin Université Lyon III.  After finishing my Bachelor degree and working as a Linguist for one year, I returned to Monash University to complete a Masters of Teaching in Primary and Secondary Education.

How you became a French teacher: To be honest, I never thought that I would ever be a teacher even though all sorts of people throughout my life kept telling me that I should be.  I always wanted to be a pastry chef, however, it was my Food and Technology Teacher who encouraged me to apply to universities instead. After completing my first degree and realising that working as a Linguist, Translator or Interpreter weren’t the jobs for me, I discovered that what I actually enjoyed most was working with children in the various part-time jobs I had over the years as a babysitter, nanny and French tutor. It was then that I finally realised that teaching was for me after all!

The reason that I wanted to teach French was because I had terrible French teachers all throughout my schooling who didn’t teach me much French at all! In Year 10, I organised to go to France on a six-month study abroad program where I learnt a lot of my French. I know that most students don’t get this same opportunity that I did so I resolved to teach students better than the way I was taught French.

Favourite past time: I love to cook, especially desserts!

Favourite Food: I love fresh raspberries and anything salted caramel.

Something people may not know about me: During high school, my friends and I from our church’s youth group used to host a radio show every Friday afternoon called “Thank God It’s Friday” on the local Bendigo community radio station, 106.7 Phoenix FM.

Pets: I have had a few dogs at different times in the past (a Pomeranian, a Dachshund, a Whippet and a Jack Russel) but we do not currently have any pets. I would love to get a toy poodle next!
