MECKERING PRIMARY SCHOOL

C.A.R.E (Communicate Actively Responsibly and Effectively

From Ms Whitelock

Welcome to SkoolBag eNewsletter week 5, term 2, 2020

Dear Meckering Primary Community

This term is whizzing along!! Just a reminder that water bottles and school hats are needed at school each day.

Its been a wild and woolly couple of days and we will be spending a little more time in class, but if the sun is shining we will be having a big run around.

Reports will look a little different this semester (more details further down) but you are welcome to book an appointment to have a telephone interview with your child's classroom teacher if you have any queries.

Love (but not hugs) Caroline

ADULTS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS/SICKNESS

Please ensure you contact the school ahead of time and seek advice before you enter school grounds.

If you are dropping off and picking up children please STOP or WAIT at the school bell to say your Goodbyes and Greetings.

Rest assured your children and their safety is at the top of our agenda. Please reinforce hygiene practices at home to help minimise the risk to school staff also.

As we enter the cooler months it is imperative that your child does not attend school if they are unwell or are experiencing cold or flu symptoms.

100's CLUB

We have begun 100’s club!! On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for fitness the children are participating in 100’s club. The challenge is to run or walk 100 km. At present they are doing this around the oval which is 300m. We would like at some point to utilize the cross country track during this time, but not yet. The children are loving 100’s club and whilst some choose to run the entire time others take the opportunity to chat. I am remarkably impressed with how the children help each other (taking off jumpers, running/walking with the younger children). Please remember to carefully label jumpers and hats as finding their owners can sometimes be difficult.

So far these children have achieved their 25km certificate;

Ben, Chloe, Drew, Jack, Jess, Joey, Jonti, Kayla, Liam, Lily, Mia, Stella, Tayla, Brock and Riley

And these children have achieved their 50km certificate;

Lily and Stella

Well done guys!!

If you haven't recived your certificates yet you will do tomorrow at the Sorry Day assembly.

NATIONAL SORRY DAY – TUESDAY 26TH MAY

Sorry Day (26 May) is a time to remember the past policies of forced child removal, and reflect on the sad and painful stories of the Stolen Generations. It is a time to recognise the resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the power of saying Sorry.

As part of the department’s commitment to ongoing respect, reconciliation and understanding (demonstrated in the ACSF), we will be participating in a short assembly on that Tuesday.

I will attach a fact sheet for sorry day to this newsletter for your perusal. Also try to watch this if you can https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m32cvvJ0tqE - ‘sorry day’ story - discussion

SIMULTANEOUS STORYTIME – WEDNESDAY 27TH MAY

This year’s Storybook is ‘CHICKEN DIVAS’

This picture book bedazzles from the get go. Explosive cover colour choices and a foiled glitter ball, (yes glitter ball!) shimmy in any light promising a fun ride ahead.  Equally sparkly end pages in musk stick pink cement attention; you just know something wonderful and weird pulses within these pages, but what? Two gorgeous chooks…with stunning good looks for starters! Whitney and Britney reside in a charming gypsy wagon adjacent to the flamboyantly fuchsia coloured house of Dora von Dooze, a fox with a penchant for pink.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 20th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.

By facilitating NSS we aim to:

  • promote the value of reading and literacy,

  • promote the value and fun of books,

promote an Australian writer and publisher,

promote storytime activities in public libraries and communities around the country,

and provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and others to participate in and enjoy the occasion.

NSS receives positive media coverage, generates a great deal of community interest and is held annually as part of Library and Information Week. 2019 was our biggest and most successful NSS to date with over 1,138,000 participants at over 11,550 locations, including participants from New Zealand, Thailand, UK, Canada, Singapore, Vietnam and Hong Kong.

DRY HANDS

With the excessive handwashing and added disinfectant being used throughout the school I have noticed that many of the children have extremely dry hands. We have changed the soap in the wet area and junior room to QV and are ensuring children wash all of the soap off and dry their hands thoroughly after washing. I would like to buy some sorbelene to help with this. If you do not wish for your child to apply sorbelene each day, please let me know your thoughts on this. Alternatively, you may wish to supply your child with a hand barrier/moisturising type cream or lotion for use at school.

ALICE LONG TABLE HIGH TEA PARTY

The children have been as busy as a white rabbit, preparing for this event. The event planners group will be sending out invitations (once we know of a time when we can gather in larger groups again, or the children may send out an expression of interest sooner). The cost of this event will be $25 per head and other than school students who will be serving and entertaining this will be an adult tea party. We have a limit of 50 places and it will be a sophisticated royal tea party where all GUESTS DRESS IN WHITE, if you are planning to come please start sourcing your pure white outfit as this may take some time.

The students will be dressing as 'Alice' characters and have had their costume character sent home. Please let us know what you are having trouble with and I'm sure 'Arty Barty' and the kids will think something up.
