Holbrook Public School

Quality education for all, in a secure and caring environment

ISSUE 18: Term 4, Week 3 - Monday, 24 October 2022

From the Principal's desk

Last week, our Year 5/6 students and teachers visited Canberra for the overnight excursion. From all accounts, our students represented Holbrook Public School well and were actively involved in all learning experiences over the three days.

In Week 6, November 16-18, we have our Year 3/4 students travelling to Melbourne. Miss Morgan, Mr Leitch, and Mrs de Steiger will accompany our students on the excursion.  School excursions provide a chance to learn away from the classroom walls and engage in activities outside the mainstream curriculum. Being away from home can also be challenging for students (and parents). But attending camp is an important milestone, and the benefits are overwhelmingly positive. School excursions encourage students to use self-management, organisational, and problem-solving skills. They build connections with others that can positively impact on learning when returning to the classroom. If you have any questions, please contact the school to discuss any concerns related to the excursion.

Check-In Assessments

This term, all Year 3 to 6 students will participate in the Check-In Assessments in the areas of reading and numeracy. The assessment is designed to be quick and easy to administer, consisting of 40-60 multiple-choice questions. This online assessment identifies students' performance in literacy and numeracy and helps teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs.

Professional Learning

Miss Lavis, Mrs Biar, and Mrs White participated in the Middle Leadership Development Program through the NSW Department of Education. The program supports assistant principals who play a crucial role in leading excellence in teaching practice and student outcomes. Our assistant principals are our school leaders who directly impact classrooms, and their influence extends across classrooms, teaching teams, and schools. Miss Lavis, Mrs Biar, and Mrs White  work collaboratively with classroom teachers to create impact, drive improvement, and enhance student and teacher learning outcomes at Holbrook Public School.

Sport

Congratulations to Ollie Cardile and Alice Hearn, who competed at the State Athletics Carnival last week. Ollie finished 24th in the 1500m and 16th in the 800m; and Alice came 9th in her 100m heat.

After the success of the Sporting Schools program last term and our hockey program, we have all students participating in tennis clinics each week this term. Research shows that quality sport and physical activity in schools positively influences children’s confidence, competence and motivation to be active at school and throughout their life. We look forward to being involved in the Sporting Schools initiative in the future.

Tell Them From Me Staff and Student Survey (TTFM)

Over the next few weeks, staff and students will also complete the Tell Them from Me survey. Tell Them From Me plays a key role in school improvement. School leaders use data to gain valuable insights into students’ well-being, engagement, and experiences at school. These insights can be used to identify areas to implement new practices to better meet the needs of students. Participating in TTFM each year allows schools to monitor trends, react to changes in key drivers of student outcomes, and evaluate whether those changes to school practice have been effective.

I look forward to sharing the voice of students, parents, and teachers with our school community.

Buddy reading at Greater Hume Children Services

We have had the pleasure of visiting the Greater Hume Children Services this term. Each week, three of our Year 5 students will have the opportunity to read some of their favourite books to the children. These special Year 5 students will be Buddies for our 2023 Kindergarten students.

It has been a joy to watch the children’s (big kids and little kids) faces light up when reading and listening to the stories. We are excited about the strong connections we are building with our local educational partners.

Year 5 and 6 Canberra Excursion - 19 to 21 October 2022

Forty-one Year 5 and 6 students, along with Mrs McEwan, Mr Earl, Mr Mohr and Miss Lavis, spent three days in Canberra last week. We visited many interesting places in Canberra and learnt a lot of interesting information. We began our trip with a visit to the National Capital Exhibition Centre and learnt about Canberra as a city. We visited the old and new Parliament Houses and learned about how parliament and our democracy work. At the Reptile Zoo, we were able to touch some reptiles and learned a lot about them. We also immersed ourselves in Science at Questacon and learnt about our money at the Royal Mint. We spotted animals during our night tour of the Botanical gardens and played minigolf at the International golf centre. The tour of the War Memorial was very interesting. We saw an actual boat that carried soldiers in Gallipoli; the campaign's diorama was fascinating. We really enjoyed our time in Canberra and have some places that we would like to go back to and continue exploring with our families.

Tennis Clinics - Each Monday to 28 November 2022

This term, Holbrook Public School will be running tennis clinics using the Australian Government's Sporting Schools grant and initiative to bring schools and sports together to help students get active. Every Monday, from 24 October to 28 November, all students will be involved in tennis clinics as part of the PD/H/PE curriculum.

Students can wear their sports uniform on Mondays to participate in these clinics.

Kindergarten Transition Session!

Wow! What a fantastic first ‘Transition to School’ session last week. It was a hive of activity welcoming our newest students to Holbrook Public School. The children began the day playing with all their new friends in our beautiful playground.

Students enjoyed practising the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty and ‘putting Humpty back together again’ with band-aids. Over the course of our transition sessions, we will be focusing on practising some nursery rhymes. Nursery rhymes are essential for young children because they help develop an ear for our language. Both rhyme and rhythm help kids hear the sounds and syllables in words, which helps children learn to read! Hearing and recognising words that rhyme is key to developing an understanding of sounds. Rhyme games are a fun way to practice phonemic awareness. Below are some activities you could do with your child to help build their knowledge of the spoken language.

  • Hearing Words that Rhyme

Encourage your child to listen for words that rhyme when you say them aloud, such as fun, sun; hat, cat; and fish and wish. See if your child can produce new words that rhyme with your words —fan, pan, ran, can, tan.

  • Nursery Rhymes

Mother Goose rhymes can be fun to recite and sing. You can sing the rhymes, read nursery rhyme books, and use finger plays to act out a rhyme (i.e. The Itsy Bitsy Spider). Ask your child to tell you the rhyming words they hear in the nursery rhyme.

  • Read Books with Rhyming Words

Many children’s books are filled with rhyming words; reading them aloud can help your child hear and recognise words that rhyme. Books by Dr Seuss, Is Your Mama a Llama?, Sheep in a Shop, Falling for Rapunzel, Rhyming Dust Bunnies, and Rumble in the Jungle are just a few books that are fun and engaging to read aloud to your child.

  • Sing Songs with Rhyme

Songs like Down by the Bay, Hey Diddle Diddle, and The Name Game are fun to sing with your child. We know from brain research that rhythm and song can help a child retain a skill or concept, and it is a fun way to engage in wordplay.

A big thank you to Kimberly from Greater Hume Children Services for accompanying some of our new students. Also, thank you to Miss Hemphill for her amazing planning and preparation. We look forward to another fun-filled day this Thursday. Please see the dates below for more detail about our upcoming sessions.

Kind regards

Holbrook Library

Why not bring the whole family along to join the library? Holbrook Library works in partnership with our local schools. Over the years, we have brought many authors and illustrators to entertain the children. All have been brilliant in their particular way. We want to encourage your family to join Holbrook Library. Borrow up to 30 items (each!) for four weeks. There are no overdue fees, and if you can’t make it to the library to return books within the due date, you can renew your books online at www.rrl.nsw.gov.au. It is free to join by either calling in or joining online. Your library card can open up a new world of books for everyone in the family. It seems that of late, fewer and fewer families are joining their local library. If you haven’t called in for a while, you are sure to get a surprise as our library is beautiful, has such a great range of books and looks more like a bookshop than maybe what you remember from years ago. We also have a quiet comfortable corner for parents to enjoy and you are more than welcome to bring in a coffee with you!
