Last week, our Year 5/6 students and teachers visited Canberra for the overnight excursion. From all accounts, our students represented Holbrook Public School well and were actively involved in all learning experiences over the three days.
In Week 6, November 16-18, we have our Year 3/4 students travelling to Melbourne. Miss Morgan, Mr Leitch, and Mrs de Steiger will accompany our students on the excursion. School excursions provide a chance to learn away from the classroom walls and engage in activities outside the mainstream curriculum. Being away from home can also be challenging for students (and parents). But attending camp is an important milestone, and the benefits are overwhelmingly positive. School excursions encourage students to use self-management, organisational, and problem-solving skills. They build connections with others that can positively impact on learning when returning to the classroom. If you have any questions, please contact the school to discuss any concerns related to the excursion.
Check-In Assessments
This term, all Year 3 to 6 students will participate in the Check-In Assessments in the areas of reading and numeracy. The assessment is designed to be quick and easy to administer, consisting of 40-60 multiple-choice questions. This online assessment identifies students' performance in literacy and numeracy and helps teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs.
Professional Learning
Miss Lavis, Mrs Biar, and Mrs White participated in the Middle Leadership Development Program through the NSW Department of Education. The program supports assistant principals who play a crucial role in leading excellence in teaching practice and student outcomes. Our assistant principals are our school leaders who directly impact classrooms, and their influence extends across classrooms, teaching teams, and schools. Miss Lavis, Mrs Biar, and Mrs White work collaboratively with classroom teachers to create impact, drive improvement, and enhance student and teacher learning outcomes at Holbrook Public School.
Sport
Congratulations to Ollie Cardile and Alice Hearn, who competed at the State Athletics Carnival last week. Ollie finished 24th in the 1500m and 16th in the 800m; and Alice came 9th in her 100m heat.
After the success of the Sporting Schools program last term and our hockey program, we have all students participating in tennis clinics each week this term. Research shows that quality sport and physical activity in schools positively influences children’s confidence, competence and motivation to be active at school and throughout their life. We look forward to being involved in the Sporting Schools initiative in the future.
Tell Them From Me Staff and Student Survey (TTFM)
Over the next few weeks, staff and students will also complete the Tell Them from Me survey. Tell Them From Me plays a key role in school improvement. School leaders use data to gain valuable insights into students’ well-being, engagement, and experiences at school. These insights can be used to identify areas to implement new practices to better meet the needs of students. Participating in TTFM each year allows schools to monitor trends, react to changes in key drivers of student outcomes, and evaluate whether those changes to school practice have been effective.
I look forward to sharing the voice of students, parents, and teachers with our school community.
