Tuesday 8th September - Pupil Free Day

From the Principal

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

An engineer who came to investigate the congestion on Campus Drive has acknowledged that fixing the congestion is highly problematic due to Campus Drive being a No Through Road and identified the current agreements of Thiele Primary School finishing at 3:00pm and both Pilgrim and Nativity finishing at 3:10pm as good steps to address this ongoing issue.

We have been notified that Keep Clear line marking at the Estia Health facility access will be installed to deter traffic queuing across the entrance, a broken yellow line will also be installed to emphasise this is a “Kiss and Drop” area this will ensure that cars are not left unattended to assist with traffic flow.

Parents are reminded with the improved weather conditions soon approaching cars are able to be parked in the car park near the Happy Valley Sports Complex providing a short walk to school to collect your children and gain some exercise and time to chat about the day as you stroll back to your car via the path and bridge.

Friday 18th September at 9:00am we will be holding our Parent information session for parents/carers of the new Reception students starting in 2021. If you have a child or know of anyone with a child who is due to start school in 2021 contact Jayne at the Front Office by phoning 8270 4222 or emailing Jayne.Hardy603@schools.sa.edu.au to request an enrolment meeting or collect an enrolment form. Transition visits for our new Receptions start on Wednesday 21st October or Thursday 22nd October.

We are fortunate to have a staff member who is trained and accredited through “Shine” to teach our Year 6 and Year 7 students Growth and Development lessons. These lessons are aligned to the "The Keeping Safe Child Protection" and "ACARA” curriculum. At times, parents become confused that we use the "National Safe Schools” curriculum, this curriculum is not used in South Australian schools.

If you have any questions or concerns about anything school related, please do not hesitate to seek clarification and share your concerns with the school. In the not too distant future, you will be invited to participate in the department-wide survey which will be focussing on parent’s engagement in learning. Invitations are expected to be sent to parents/carers on 7th September. We look forward to receiving your feedback.

Kind Regards,

Sharon Willoughby

Principal

Congratulations

Isabella M for achieving a High Distinction (100%) for her AMEB Grade 1 Theory Exam

Thank you from Kangaroo Island Community Education

Recently, Thiele Primary School had a casual day to raise funds for Kangaroo Island Community Education.

We are putting donations towards supporting families to access all camps and excursions this year at no cost, and to provide outdoor play equipment for student well-being.

It has been a tough year for us with bushfires and Covid-19 but we are a resilient community and knowing we have support from other communities – like yours makes us very grateful.

Fundraising

FUNDRAISING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Over the past few years, we have been lucky enough to have some AMAZING parent volunteers run our Thiele PS fundraising committee. They have all done an incredible job and I am sure, had some fun along the way. Sadly some of their children are in their final year at Thiele and others are unable to continue due to personal reasons…..SO!!!!!!

Would you like to become involved in Thiele Primary School by volunteering some time a couple of times a term to be a part of this invaluable committee? Then WE NEED YOU!

We are hoping that if people are willing to be on this committee then coming on for term 4 would mean that those that are currently running it will be able to pass on their knowledge and show you the ropes. If you are interested, please send Jo Hicks an email at jo.hicks915@schools.sa.edu.au. Once we have some interested volunteers, we will organise a time and day for everyone to meet to tell you about the committee, what commitment is required and the sort of things they do.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU

Commissioner's Digital Challenge

The Commissioner’s Digital Challenge is an initiative of the Commissioner for Children and Young People, South Australia. You may like to encourage your child to become involved in the ‘unplugged’ activities which require no devices and are free step by step activities for all year levels for digital thinking across various subject areas which can be accessed at home or school by logging onto the challenge at https://commissionersdigitalchallenge.net.au/

· Space to Dream is a Mars-themed design thinking challenge with authentic voice from former NASA astronaut, Pamela Melroy. Free 3D design tools for every child from Makers Empire – no special equipment required. Unplugged (paper) option for those with limited digital access. The best designs will be publicly exhibited at MOD Museum of Discovery.

· Learn to Speak Robot is a digital thinking (coding and computational thinking) challenge with hundreds of step-by-step activities to choose from. Any four activities = challenge complete!

How do we connect to others? What makes connection between children and carers? Is it the length of time or is it the number of connection points that happen like little sparks that fire together? Even a few moments can make a connection that can be remembered for a lifetime. When my little boy was very small he once cupped my face in his hands and turned my head to face him full on. In that simple and very gentle action he was teaching me the basics. He didn't use words, yet In a language more powerful and simple than any words he was telling me: I know I have your attention when your face is turned towards mine, you're looking at me with interest and you're curious about what I'm sharing. My divided attention had been obvious in my body language and he showed me what to do to make the straight forward changes needed for connection.

Pedal Prix Bowker Street BBQ Fundraiser

Monday 7th and 14th September the parents/carers of the Pedal Prix riders will be volunteering their time at the Bowker Street Soccer carnival to continue their fundraising efforts for the newly purchased Pedal Prix trike and trailer which needed to be replaced due to break in at the Pedal Prix shed in the Christmas holidays. Thank you in advance to the parents/carers who have kindly volunteered their time to support this event.

Performing Arts

Performing Arts has been going strong across Campus this term!

We welcomed back our Instrumental staff at the start of this term, and our students have been enjoying getting back to face-to-face lessons after being online for most of Term 2.  Senior Choir is enjoying once again working with our accompanist, Mrs Ros Sarre, and are working hard on our ‘Sing!’ repertoire in time for our end-of-term cinema sing-along experience. Junior Choir have added some new songs to their repertoire over the term (one suggested by the students!) and also learnt some fun new warm-ups. Campus Troupe have started rehearsing again with some new small-group routines, and Drama Club are practicing their skits with gusto!

Finally, in ‘Breaking News’: we’re starting work on the 2020 Music: Count Us In Festival song this week, which will eventually involve all our classes, Campus Band and Choirs in learning the fabulous, student-composed song “You Wont Bring Us Down”. You can check out the song at https://musicaustralia.org.au/program/countusin/the-song/2020-program-song/
