Reynella Primary School Grapevine

Term 4, Week 5 | 2022

From the Leadership Team

The beginning of this term has been extremely busy for Reynella PS. Many of our students have had opportunities to shine these past weeks through their involvement in the inaugural Student Summit, Children’s University and Southern Metropolitan Music Festival. As well, we have had an External School Review with members of the Review Team working across our site to support us with our School Improvement Plan. A huge thank you to the large number of parents, including those on Governing Council, who gave up their time to chat with the team. The findings of the review will be published on our school website when they become available.

Student Summit

Last Tuesday, we had the massive privilege of having two of our wonderful students, Josh H and Charlotte K, represent our school and co-facilitate the Metro Student Summit. They were on stage at the Adelaide Convention Centre in front of an audience of 1000 – consisting of children from years 5 – year 11, teachers, leaders, our Chief Executive Martin Westwell, Minister for Education Blair Boyer and members of the Senior Executive Group (SEG).

The Student Summits are a key part of Martin Westwell’s re-shaping of education in SA by giving our young people a voice about teaching and learning. Seven Summits are happening across the state, including in the APY Lands. All the feedback collected from students will be shared with Principals across the state at next year’s Leaders Day, where a new purpose statement will be developed.

Also attending were Lachie K and Ala T who represented the voices of the students from Reynella PS. They worked alongside other students from across the state to provide input in to the future of education in South Australia.

Children's University

Bonython Hall on North Terrace was flooded with students from Reynella PS last Tuesday night as the proud families, friends and staff watched them graduate from Children’s University, 2022. This was only our second year participating and we had 69 students graduate, with 63 able to attend the ceremony.

Children’s University is an innovative program that engages children and young people in exciting, out-of-school learning opportunities to increase their chances for educational achievement and rewards them for taking responsibility for their own learning. They work with community and cultural institutions, support the development of school-based clubs and activities, and provide so many opportunities for parents and communities to engage in the education of our young people (because they are our future).

A huge thank you must go to Mrs Fiona Brown and Miss Amy Sheppard who gave up so much of their own time to support our students; particularly when the portal went down! We hope to see many more new faces in 2023.

Southern Metropolitan Music Festival

On Tuesday November 1, 40 primary students performed at The Hopgood Theatre, Noarlunga as part of The Southern Metro Music Festival (SMMF).

The SMMF hosts two evening concerts featuring up to 15 schools from the Southern regions of Adelaide from Darlington to Goolwa. The choral repertoire mirrors that of the Adelaide Festival and provides opportunities for public and independent school students in Years 3 - 6.

Apart from the 21 students who were represented in the choir, we had 18 students perform as part of the dance troupe and our soloist from the Festival choir, Jasmine C, once again had an                                            opportunity to perform her solo.

A huge thank you to Mrs McDonald for all her efforts in supporting our students to perform.

Remembrance Day

Last Friday was our annual Remembrance Day service run by our Citizenship Action Team.

What all of these children had in common was the respectful and positive manner in which they conducted themselves and represented Reynella Primary school; we are very proud of them all.

Class Placement 2023

The class placement process has begun and we will be starting the New Year with 18 classes. Our staff remain very stable for 2023 and we hope to confirm our class structure by the end of the school year. We aim to arrange class groupings that optimise the learning needs of our students and uses to full advantage the resources, skills and teaching styles of staff members. We again anticipate that many classes next year will be composite due to the increasing needs of the students and our numbers.

Information regarding your child’s class and teacher for 2023 will go home with reports Thursday week 9.

Learning with D1

I think Genius Hour is a time to do what you want and to express your interests and love of learning.  I am writing stories for 8-10 year olds and making into a book of short stories.  Charli

I am making a V8 Supercar track for Genius Hour because I like how they race and how cool the big crashes make steam come out of the car.  I used cardboard and hazard tape to build it. I am trying to work out how to get matchbox cars to move on the track.  Brax

For Genius Hour me and Liam are making a Relaxation Fort and getting tutorials to show us how to make stress toys for the fort.  Zac

Genius Hour is a fun activity where you can make something you are passionate about.  I am making kids’ books.  One is about a birthday party and the series will be about special occasions.  I am going to sell them and donate the money to charity.  Jack

During Genius Hour we are allowed to make our passion projects.  It’s really fun and an educational activity because some people have decided to do a lot of research.  You can find out really interesting things.  I am designing and making jewellery that I will sell at my Grandpa’s work.  The money I make will be going to a charity for homeless people.   Taylah

Learning with D6 - Fun with Chemical Science

Last week we investigated if we could create a gas by using a liquid and a solid. Each group had a small drink bottle half filled with water. Mrs Priest gave us 2 dissolvable tablets to put in the drink bottle. A team member then had to quickly put a balloon over the top of the drink bottle. We noticed lots of bubbles starting to form inside the bottle as the tablets dissolved. To our surprise the balloon started expanding!

We learnt that a gas could be created when you mix water and fizzy tablets.

Fun with Physical Science in D6

Today we did an experiment to find out which materials are conductors. We needed a dob of butter on the end of 3 different spoons. The spoons were plastic, metal and wood. Next, we placed each spoon in a mug and Mrs Priest poured some hot water into the mugs. We watched to see if anything would happen. We observed the butter on the metal spoon melt down the spoon after 4 minutes. The wooden and plastic spoons still had butter on them. After some time the butter on the wooden spoon melted a bit but on the plastic spoon it remained at the top. We did notice the wooden spoon started cracking maybe because the water was making it expand.

We learnt that the heat from the water transferred onto the metal spoon causing making it hot. That caused the butter to melt down the spoon. Metal is a conductor of heat. By Harper

Wellbeing

Children and vaping

It has long been known that smoking cigarettes has harmful and deadly health consequences.  There is now a new danger in the form of vaping. This is creating huge concerns as more and more young people are involved and we are only beginning to understand the harm vaping does.

E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that hold and heat e-liquids that emit vapours that users inhale. Using an e-cigarette is called vaping. E-cigarettes can look like traditional cigarettes, cigars or everyday items such as USBs or pens.

Key points to consider are:

  • E-cigarettes and vaping devices heat e-liquids into an aerosol that users breathe in
  • E-liquids may contain nicotine, flavourings and a range of harmful and toxic chemicals
  • E-cigarettes are also known as vapes, mods, and juuls
  • Using e-cigarettes is sometimes called ‘vaping’ or ‘juuling’
  • E-cigarettes and e-liquids have not been safety tested by the TGA in Australia, and should not be considered safe

As a parent and caregiver, you have an important role in protecting children from e-cigarettes.

It’s important to talk to your child about the health risks of e-cigarettes. Many children are under the misconception that e-cigarettes are safe. It is helpful to know what the different devices look like and the different words young people may use to describe using e-cigarettes. This will help you to talk about e-cigarettes with your child and teen.

It is illegal for children to buy vapes and vaping products from shops but some students are buying these from members of the community.

These websites offer information and advice on vaping.

Hats

Staff are currently trialing a new process for wearing hats this term. Each morning classes will be checking the BOM for the predicted UV rating for the day. If, at any time, the UV rating is going to be over 3, children will need to wear a hat at both recess and lunch time.

Hats, if needing to be worn, must always be worn on the oval – even if it is windy.

If children do not have a hat they must sit under the verandahs near Carew, Kaurna, Morphett and Reynell, or the Cola.

Drink Bottles

With the warmer weather hopefully approaching in term 4 please ensure you send you child to school with a named drink bottle filled with water.

School Fees - Government Rebate

Materials and Service Charges for 2022 were due to be paid in full by Thursday 14 April 2022. If you still have outstanding fees and have not made arrangements for payment by instalment, your fees are now overdue.

If you are eligible for School Card this year, please apply now (information in this Grapevine).

If you are experiencing financial difficulties, please contact the school to speak with Kay Starczak, Business Manager. You can phone: 8381 1493 or email her at dl.0379.finance@schools.sa.edu.au

GOVERNMENT REBATE

All students enrolled at Reynella PS, with the exception of students approved for School Card 2022, have been credited with a $100 Government Rebate. All families were sent a letter and statement explaining in Term 2. We cannot apply the credit to outstanding fees without parent authorisation.

If you would like your Govt Rebate credit applied to outstanding fees, please send us a text or email authorising that with the wording "please apply Govt Rebate to fees - then list all children names"

There are several options for use of the Rebate, but you can only use the credit to purchase/pay for other items once your School Fees are paid in full:

  • ask us to apply it to outstanding fees
  • use the credit to pay for future excursions/fundraising
  • use the credit to purchase new uniform. This cannot be done on Qkr, you will need to phone or email our Finance Team or come into the Front Office.
  • leave the credit on your account to credit toward 2023 fees

2023 Credit

Parents will also receive another $100 per child in 2023 to use for School Fees, with the exception of 2023 School Card holders.
