MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL: SECONDARY

To all in our School Community

As I look back over Term 1, it seems hard to believe that it was only a few weeks ago that we were all cheering at the Inter-House Swimming Carnivals, and the School Prefects were raising money selling icy poles for the people and animals devastated by the bushfires in the Eastern states at the start of the year. Little did we know of the changes to our world that were about to unfold.

It seems that all conversation these days seems to be around COVID-19, hand-washing and social-distancing as we all take on the responsibility of ensuring that we do all that we can to prevent the spread of Coronavirus in our communities.

There is no doubt that moving to online learning has been a steep learning curve for students, staff and parents alike! I have been so impressed with the way that our students have adapted so quickly to this new paradigm; I know that it is particularly hard for them to be away from their friends and friendship groups. I would particularly ask that you keep our Year 12 students in your thoughts and prayers at this time. READ MORE

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAPLAIN

It is really hard to stop oneself using the same phrases about the time we are now living in. Unprecedented times. The once in 100 year event. Unreal. Fulfilment of prophecy.

I have always been a sci-fi / fantasy buff and so much of what is happening around me reminds me of many movie and novel plots, either collectively or individually.

In Jesus’ time, the Jews had been under occupation for decades and their Scriptures predicted that God would send a Messiah to save them. Who was this Messiah to be like … like Moses, like Elijah, like the all -conquering King David?  READ MORE

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers

The holidays are upon us, and it seems very strange to be writing about a term that has been the oddest of my forty-year career in education. This term delivered a solid start and then an unexpected twist with the arrival of COVID-19 into the community. It has been very unusual the past three weeks to have very few students on campus and for our interactions to have moved primarily to the virtual world.

Still, I am very thankful and impressed how well everyone has adapted in such challenging times. We must continue to deliver key curriculum learning to the students without requiring our parents to obtain a teaching degree in double-quick time, and this has been our challenge as we have moved to the online delivery mode. The staff have been working tirelessly to upskill using our learning management system, Seesaw and tricks and tips have been shared widely amongst colleagues. A lot of online tutorials have been accessed, and the results are pretty impressive for such a short lead-in time, so thank you, everyone!  READ MORE

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF PRIMARY - HALLS HEAD

Dear Parents and Caregivers

As a school and local/global community, we find ourselves in a very unique and challenging circumstance; a point in time, in which COVID-19 is at the forefront of our attention, considerations and thoughts. This reality has thrust us into a very different educational delivery, in which we are constantly reflecting and evolving.

While it is not the method of schooling that we long for, I would like to recognise the efforts of everyone in our community. In our second week of online programming, our students have managed the transition very well and are congratulated on their efforts and hard work. So too are the efforts of our staff, who have very quickly adjusted to an online delivery model, while still prioritising the creative and meaningful learning experiences that we provide for our students. As I mentioned in my first video on Seesaw last week, I certainly appreciate the efforts of our parents and family members supporting our students at home. This is no small feat, and I am in admiration of your dedication and flexibility. We will continue to work together and adapt and change our programming as needed.

ONLINE LEARNING UPDATE

We are so proud of all of our students who have transitioned to online learning. We are continuing to work closely to make the experience enjoyable for everyone.

Thank you for the amazing response to our post last week asking for photos of students learning at home!

We have also been emailed a selection of Home Economics photos from two different students, Jack Learmonth (Year 8) making peanut butter cookies, and Shania White (Year 10) who baked American brownies – they look delicious!

Please continue to email your photos to communityrelations@fias.wa.edu.au, or post them to our Facebook page – we are looking forward to seeing how more of our students are getting along at home!

YEAR 12 PREFECTS AND YEAR 8 STUDENTS – ONLINE KAHOOT QUIZ

For many students, events were cancelled in light of the Covid-19 pandemic –  one of them being the 2020 Year 8 School Camp.

For this reason, the 2020 Prefects decided to hold the Quiz Night (which students would have completed on Year 8 Camp) during Period 1 on Friday 3 April. The Prefects, with the help of the teachers, organised the quiz to be online through Kahoot, and had over 140 Year 8 students participate!

Well done to all the Year 8s!

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

We are aware that some families have been directly affected by the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic with job loss, significant reduction in work hours or business closure, causing significant financial stress.

All schools of the Anglican Schools Commission will provide tuition fee assistance to those families who are now experiencing financial stress due to loss of employment. The level of tuition fee support will be commensurate with the new financial circumstances in which families find themselves due to the impact of COVID-19 on the Australian economy.

Affected families are invited to contact the School Business Manager, Kylie Anastazjew, bursar@fias.wa.edu.au so we can work with you on a solution that best fits your situation. Given the changing nature of measures necessary to combat COVID-19, financial arrangements will cover the period to the end of Term 2, with an assurance that we will review this position in June in relation to ongoing enrolments.

SECONDARY CRICKET – 2020 GRAEME WOOD SHIELD SQUAD

Captains: Matthew Boyd and Noah Carmody

Leading run scorer: Wian Kruger, 148 total runs with an average of 37

Leading wicket taker: Brodie Cheater, 4 total wickets

Throughout Term 1, 2020, our senior boys represented the School in the Graeme Wood Shield, which is a T-20 format of cricket. The boys competed incredibly well throughout this competition and represented Frederick Irwin with the utmost pride.

With wins against Comet Bay College, Mandurah Catholic College and Halls Head Community College, it all came down to our final fixture against Corpus Christi College: Win, and the boys progress through to finals, lose and we bow out of the competition.

Corpus Christi batted first and posted an impressive 177. Not daunted by the task of chasing down 177, our openers went in with a positive attitude, and the runs began to follow. Throughout the competition, Matthew Boyd and Wian Kruger anchored the side with their ability to score runs and limit the opposition with some tidy overs with the ball. If we were to win, they had to bat well. With 6 overs remaining we were still requiring 80 runs.

The boys had to take risks, which ultimately led to the loss of wicket after wicket. A great run chase, but they fell 21 runs short. As a result, we bowed out of the competition. Mr Ash Blake and myself could not have been prouder of the effort the boys put in. A disappointing result but an incredible opportunity to be a part of!

NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM

At the beginning of this year, from 1 to 11 January, I was lucky enough to travel to Canberra to participate in the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). I can say without a doubt it was the best experience of my life! I was able to see the many ways in which Science is integrated into our lives and to broaden my horizons.

We stayed in dorms at the Australian National University (ANU), which allowed us to have first-hand experience what living on campus at a university is like. Being surrounded by 200 or so like-minded and welcoming 16 and 17 year olds from all over Australia, and some even from Germany, was definitely a highlight and I have made lifelong friendships from the NYSF!

We were able to expand our horizons to see what STEM really is beyond the classroom and we were extremely privileged to experiment in the labs at the ANU. Some of the activities we did at NYSF included:

  • visit STEM related laboratories and facilities,
  • go on site tours such as a fossil dig in Cowra,
  • listen to lectures from Australia’s top scientists,
  • social events (formal dinners),
  • workshops which encourage networking; a really important and underrated tool, and
  • my particular favourite was 'Speed Date a Scientist' where I was able to talk with a number of the most influential scientists in fields from medicine to astronomy about their career and I gained really inspiring advice from them.

I think being able to go to NYSF before Year 12 began definitely gave me clarity about the career path I wanted to take and a head-start on what to expect from the busiest school year! Participating in NYSF confirmed my decision to pursue science as a career and which pathway I want to take post high-school.

I would highly encourage any current Year 11 student who is interested in Science and related fields to apply this year to go in January 2021. Applications for 2021 open early March and you can apply online

I promise, it will be the most pivotal and inspiring 10 days of your life!

CONOCOPHILLIPS SCIENCE EXPERIENCE UWA

The ConocoPhillips Experience is open to Year 9 and 10 students at a variety of Universities across Australia.
During the Summer holidays I spent three days at the University of Western Australia and they were one of the highlights of my holidays. I was exposed to life at UWA and all the different possible degrees/courses within a Bachelor of Science. Over the three days I completed nine different activities all in different aspects of science. My favourites were the forensic science, marine biology, heart dissection and psychological science units.

We had talks from UWA Guild members and university students involved with clubs. Other talks were about how to become a student at UWA and about UWA’s Residential Colleges.

Although the three days flew by really quickly, the diverse group of people who lived everywhere from Geraldton to Kalgoorlie to Albany and everywhere in between, became close with our student leader and it felt as if I had known them for ages. It was a great experience to meet new people and learn about UWA. Thanks to our science teachers for advertising the program through SEQTA and to the Rotary Club of Pinjarra for sponsoring my place on the program.

From the program I now know where I want to go to university, and would recommend the experience to anyone with an interest in Science.

Morghan Sattler (Year 10)

STORIES FOR DOGS

Frederick Irwin Anglican Primary School – Meadow Springs is very excited to have new regular visitors to our school to help our students with their reading. Maki and her dog, Pola, will begin visiting the school every Wednesday, once schooling returns to normal, to help our Year 2 classes with their reading.

The Story Dogs program partners with the classroom teachers to help students with their reading. Maki and Pola will help the same 4 or 5 students each week. The students will come out of their classroom and sit one-on-one with Maki and read to Pola. Pola loves to listen and will not mind if the student makes a few mistakes; she just wants to have a fun time so that books and reading become a joyful experience.

Pola loves to run on the beach, sleep with her cuddly toys and shares ‘pecking’ scrap food with chooks in her garden!

Pola has been practising at home with her new reading rug and books so that she will be ready to help the students. She is super excited about starting.

When school returns and this program starts, we ask that all parents and children do not interrupt or attempt to pat Pola. We do not want her to be distracted from her important job.

If you are interested in volunteering in this rewarding program, please contact Amanda Milroy on 0417993497.

Primary Have Sum Fun Mathematics Online 2020

Is Mathematics fun in the Primary? Yes, it certainly is as far as Year 5 and Year 6 Have Sum Fun Maths Teams are concerned.

Have Sum Fun Maths Online (HSFOL) is conducted by the Mathematics Association of Western Australia (MAWA). It is a quiz consisting of problem-solving questions for the teams of four students. They compete in their year levels against other teams from all around Australia. The competition consists of three rounds of ten questions and once logged in, the team has one hour to complete the questions.

Some questions were fiercely debated amongst the team members; however, group decisions were made, and the teams achieved some pleasing results during Term 1. The Year 6 and Year 5 teams were placed second in this National competition.

The School is very proud of these students because of their diligence and focussed attitude as they juggled timetables around school camps, changed classroom timetables and extra sport commitments. During some weeks, they had to complete two rounds back-to-back.

Well done to these students!

The team members were:

HSF Online Term 1 Year 6

Andrew Gilleece 6M3
Samantha Samuels 6M1
