Staff Notices

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

 Welcome to Term 2!

It certainly is a different start to what we are used to! However, it has been lovely for the staff to greet both those students who have returned to the campus and, in a different way, those who continue to work from home.

As you will be aware, the School has strongly encouraged students in Years 11 and 12 to come to school from the start of term and, as there has been a very good response, it is possible to commence the term with face-to-face teaching and learning for these two year groups. Teachers will continue to support our 11s and 12s who are still learning online from home. READ MORE

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL: CURRICULUM

Dear Parents

Welcome back to Term 2. It is wonderful to have most of the Year 11 and Year 12 students return to normal classes. Our Years 7 to 10 students will continue with online learning with some students working from home and others choosing to work from school. Overall, we will continue to do our best to provide valuable teaching and learning experiences for all our students.

Interim Reports

Interim Reports for students in Years 7 to 10 will be available on Monday 4 May after 4.00pm.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome to Term 2, whether you are with us physically or learning at home, I hope everyone has had a decent break. We start the term in unusual circumstances, but as a school, we are trying our best to address the needs of our learners.

As you are aware, students attending campus will be supported in their online learning by teachers and support staff.

They will complete their classwork in year-level blocks due to the increase in numbers, and students learning from home will continue to receive daily lessons for completion. At present, this is the situation for the first three weeks of Term 2.  READ MORE

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HEAD OF PRIMARY - HALLS HEAD

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all of our students back to School, whether it be the students who have returned to campus or students who are learning from home.

All students are engaging with the same online learning platform, and we will continue to support our students in any way we can. I would like to acknowledge all of the feedback we have received from parents, thank our staff and families for their immense efforts and dedication, and let our parents know that we prioritise reflecting on how we can accommodate our students in this challenging time.

I hope everyone was able to spend some time with loved ones during our break and look forward to continuing to keep our community connected.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST - AMY O'BRIEN

Miss Amy O’Brien is Frederick Irwin Anglican School’s new School Psychologist. The purpose of Miss O’Brien’s role is to help improve the mental health and wellbeing of the school on a holistic level, working with staff and students from K-12 across both campuses.

Miss O’Brien will be working to provide information and resources to teaching staff, provide seminars and workshops to parents and students, and conducting individual assessments or counselling.

So far this year, some of the community initiatives that Miss O’Brien has engaged in include providing a group anxiety-management skill session for Year 5 and Year 6 students to help them develop confidence for their school camp, talking at parent information nights for parents of Year 5 and Year 6 to help parents in supporting their children in attending camp, and speaking on the topic of resilience at the first Community Morning Tea for 2020.

Once COVID-19 restrictions are removed, Miss O’Brien is looking forward to working broadly across the school to help improve the wellbeing of students.

In the meantime, Miss O’Brien continues to support the teaching and pastoral care staff at Frederick Irwin through staff consultation; developing training and resources for staff and students, and providing referrals and support to students and parents.

ANZAC DAY 2020

We would like to thank three of our Music students, Aavi Barker (Year 7), Fletcher Glenn (Year 11) and Ellie Yendell (Year 11), who took the time to record The Last Post that we shared to everyone on ANZAC Day.

BOOK CLUB

In these unprecedented times we’re all being asked to change the way we work and live. Our tradition of putting books into the hands of kids isn’t going to change, but for Term 2, we're doing things a little differently. For the first time in the history of Scholastic  –  we will have a Virtual Book Club for Term 2.

Every child will still have the opportunity to access their Book Club catalogue HERE.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

We are aware that some families have been directly affected by the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic with job loss, significant reduction in work hours or business closure, causing significant financial stress.

All schools of the Anglican Schools Commission will provide tuition fee assistance to those families who are now experiencing financial stress due to loss of employment. The level of tuition fee support will be commensurate with the new financial circumstances in which families find themselves due to the impact of COVID-19 on the Australian economy.

Affected families are invited to contact the School Business Manager, Kylie Anastazjew, bursar@fias.wa.edu.au so we can work with you on a solution that best fits your situation. Given the changing nature of measures necessary to combat COVID-19, financial arrangements will cover the period to the end of Term 2, with an assurance that we will review this position in June in relation to ongoing enrolments.

GORDON HOUSE MASCOT 2020

During the last week of Term 1, the Gordon House Council ran a fun activity for our Gordon House members – the challenge was to find a Gordon House Mascot for 2020.

Students were encouraged to share a picture of their nomination along with a message about why their mascot would be a good representative of Gordon House, to our Gordon Microsoft Team.

Congratulations to Heather Crisp (white dog) and Charlotte Hunt (chicken), both from Gordon 4, for their winning entries!

A prize was delivered to their houses to enjoy with their families over the Easter break. A big thank you to the Gordon students and staff who entered the competition!

FREDERICK IRWIN BASKETBALL 2019 / 2020

Well what a way to have the season end! After what was one of our most successful seasons to date, 42 teams, over 320 players; four teams FIAS 14, 29, 32 and 37 finished top of their ladders and 13 other teams were set to play finals, many players for the first time.

It was fantastic to see so many students from Frederick Irwin at the courts enjoying playing basketball.

And then, all of a sudden, it was over and completely out of our control. As disappointing as it has been, it pales into insignificance when we consider our community’s health. We still need everyone to work together to get on top of the health crisis facing our community and our country. Only then can we look forward to getting back on the courts playing again.

We have collected MVP trophies, Runner-Up MVP trophies and participation medallions from MBA and will hold on to them to present at some point in the future.

Congratulations go to Mitchel van Nus and Hannah Chatfield for winning MVP in their divisions; and to Emmerson Hepburn, Elizabeth Shepherd, Jessie Meares and Keira Chatfield  who are all Runner Up MVP’s.

A massive thank you to all coaches and managers who under difficult circumstances have returned uniforms, shorts and tops, it is very much appreciated. If players still have uniforms could they please return them clearly labelled as soon as possible

As a school we would like to convey how thankful we are to all coaches and managers for your contribution to Frederick Irwin Basketball; without you all we just would not have the opportunity for so many of our students to play.

Basketball is our largest representative sport by a long way  –  players, coaches and managers, make up nearly 400 members of our school community.  Every Wednesday morning at 7.15am we would have our youngest FIAS 1, Year 1 Girls and oldest FIAS 15, Year 12 girls training at each end of the court.

Congratulations to all players on their season and thank you again to all coaches and managers for your efforts over the past season.

Team awards 2019 / 2020.

The ‘Team Award’ is presented to the player, as voted by players and coaches of each team, who best optimises the characteristics we would like to see in a player representing our school. Click HERE for the full list of winners.

They have both played for 11 consecutive years over 130 games playing for our school. This is a phenomenal commitment to representing our school and worthy of special mention.
