THE BIDWILL TELEGRAPH

Newsletter Term 1 Week 9

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

With two weeks until the end of term, I would like to thank students and staff for all of their hard work and ability to focus on getting along together.

2019 NAPLAN TESTS

Students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will sit for the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) in week 3.

I would like students, family and friends to remember that these tests are unable to measure all of what it is that makes you the valued person you are. The NAPLAN tests results give you some very specific information about yourself but it cannot say everything about who you are and what you have achieved.

The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 14-16 May, 2019.

Tell Them From Me Student Survey

Students in years 3-6 have been involved in completing a survey. This survey provides our school with invaluable information about experiences and opinions that help shape future programs and initiatives at our school. All responses are confidential and the survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete.

With each event it is wonderful to see our parents and community supporting the students. We work hard to ensure we celebrate all of the good and significant things that we create in our school.

Harmony Day was established to Celebrate Australian Cultural Diversity and to be a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia Home.  Last Thursday, we celebrated Harmony Day 2019 where students and staff celebrated this special day together.

Yours in Education

BIDWILL PS SCHOOL’S STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL

The Student Representative Council (SRC) consists of the School Leaders from 2019; House Captains and one representative from each class, starting from Year 2. They will meet fortnightly to discuss opportunities/ideas raised at class meetings, work in student action teams and to be involved in school decision making. The SRC will be supporting and promoting Positive Behaviour in Learning and would work well with the Peer Support Program that will be active in Term 2.

There are four student action teams. Each team is facilitated by a teacher; has two senior student leaders, four sports leaders and a mix of year levels.

The Environment team. They have input into playground and grounds planning, help with keeping the school environment clean; developing and maintaining a sustainable school garden.

The Special Events and Celebrations team. They help with assemblies, arrange for guest speakers to visit and help to promote mufti days each term. The donations collected on mufti days will go towards special projects organised by the SRC.

The Playground/Sports Activities team. They organise and lead activities at playtime for students and support teachers during home sports. The activities include such things as basketball/handball competitions, dance, skipping, craft and indoor sports.

The Healthy Living TeamThey have input in promoting the Live Life Well program to get more students, more active, more often and focus on healthy eating habits.

Student Representative Council is a student-based civic organisation designed to help promote school spirit and leadership among students.

Students participating in the Student Representative Council will maintain a high standard of personal conduct. SRC members will demonstrate leadership qualities by serving as good examples of behaviour through their words and actions.

All Council members will be expected to participate in approved activities, which will serve to enhance the quality of both the physical and behaviour environment of the school.

The purpose of student council is:

1.    To develop positive attitudes and to practice good citizenship.

2.    To promote harmonious relations throughout the entire school.

3.    To improve student/faculty relationships.

4.    To improve school morale and general welfare.

5.    To provide a forum for student expression.

6.    To plan special events or projects.

Benefits of being involved in student council include: opportunity to improve reading and writing skills, gain experience in public speaking, and learn how to make a positive impact on school and community environment.  In addition, student council serves as a chance to meet new friends and work with a wide variety of people.

Bidwill Public School will be hosting a ThinkUKnow presentation on April 4th at 2pm and all parents and carers are encouraged to attend.

ThinkUKnow Australia is a cyber safety education program that educates parents, carers and teachers of how people are using technology, the challenges they may face online, and how to help them overcome these in a safe and ethical way.

ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank. The program is delivered in collaboration with policing partners New South Wales Police Force, as well as Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.

The presentation will be delivered by a local law enforcement member and an industry volunteer. The presentation covers issues relating to children and young peoples’ privacy and security online, their relationships with other users and their online reputation. It provides insight into the devices young people are using, as well as the popular websites, apps and social networking sites they’re accessing.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology.
