Term 2 - Week 10 - 1st July 2022

Mr Lewis' Report

Just like that, we are at the end of Term 2. Thank you to everyone across the GEPS community for your ongoing support of our great school. Term 2 has been another fantastic time of learning and fun. We have loved welcoming parents back into our school for assemblies and celebrations. We look forward to providing more opportunities for families to be in our school to celebrate learning achievements and special events with us in Term 3.

Please note: Students will all return to school on Tuesday 19th July.

NAIDOC Week

This week, our school celebrated NAIDOC week. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920′s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year, to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. There are many informative and exciting events happening through the school holiday break and I encourage everyone to get out and take a look.

This year, our school Junior AECG leaders along with the support of Mrs Boulton, Miss Luschwitz, Mrs Potter and Miss Kennedy organised a range of incredible cultural experiences across our school. From the opening assembly, activities in class, tasting of bush tucker and an excursion to some beautiful local sites, the week was exciting. Of course, we send our enormous thanks out to those dedicated teachers that worked hard to timetable and organise this special time for our school.  I would also like to thank Kat O’Boyle for working behind the scenes making delicious dampers for our students to taste. This was a monumental effort, one I know our staff and students all appreciated.

We are also looking forward to having our K-2 NAIDOC excursion early next term.

Athletics Carnival

It was awesome to see our incredible GEPS athletes participate at our annual athletics carnival last week. I was so impressed with the ‘can do’ attitude of each of our students throughout the day. We were fortunate with weather and a great day was had by all. A huge thank you to Miss Isbester and Mr Morrison for organising such an inclusive carnival. Having students from Kindergarten through to year 6, busy with fun activities for the duration of the day was great to see. Talking with a few of our kindy students with huge smiles on their faces indicated the bus trip was a particular highlight. We cannot wait to do it all again next year, thank for to all GEPS families that came along and supported this event.

Staffing update

This term we farewell Isabella Wightman (Bella) as she heads off to Albury to complete her final practicum before becoming a fully qualified classroom teacher. Bella has been working in our school for the past 18 months as an SLSO and most recently as a provisional teacher. On behalf of the whole GEPS community, I would like to thank Bella for everything that she has done for our students during this time and wish her the best of luck for her future teaching career.

Student Academic Reports

On Wednesday 29th June, all students in K-6 received their Semester 1 Report. Teachers spend many hours preparing your child’s report and work hard to ensure that it is a true and accurate reflection of their academic progress over the semester. Please take the time to discuss the report with your child and reflect on their achievements and where there may need to be a greater focus for improvements to occur. I encourage all parents to read the front cover of your child’s report as this gives an overview of effort and achievement scales that are used in the report. Student attendance, both partial and whole day, are also included. If you have any questions in relation to your child’s report, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to speak to your child’s teacher.

National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines 2022. Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes: year of schooling, category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional; level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

·         Formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools.

·         Consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools.

·         Develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability. The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified - the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. For more information please go to - https://www.nccd.edu.au/sites/default/files/nccd_parent_fact_sheet_english_0.pdf

Thank You to Staff at GEPS

I would like to give credit to ALL staff of Glendale East PS, as they have all worked tirelessly this semester to support students, families and each other throughout challenging times. In order to keep classes functioning when we have had high staff absenteeism due to illness, it has been necessary to use our curriculum support teachers to cover classes when casual staff haven’t been available. It has been a team effort and we’ve done our best to ensure that quality teaching and learning continued for our students.

Monday 18th July is a School Development Day for staff only. Our teachers will be involved in professional learning all day. Students will begin Term 3 on Tuesday 19th July 2022.

Parent Online Payment

WHAT IS A POP PAYMENT?

POP is our schools preferred option of payment.

It is a secure payment system hosted by Westpac to ensure that your credit/debit details are captured in a secure manner.  These details are not passed back to the school and are not stored by Westpac.

Parents and Carers can make online payments  via our school website.  Payments can be made using a Visa or Mastercard and will be processed via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac.  Debit cards are also accepted.

Please note: the website will not tell you how much you owe so please have your term account handy when paying.

The advantages of POP are:

  • Secure payments
  • Parents can print their own receipt or have it emailed to them for record keeping – no more searching in the school bag!

When you make an online payment you must enter the child's name and date of birth, plus the child's class.  This allows us to identify your child – ie in case we have some students with exactly the same name. No reference numbers are required - they are not mandatory fields.  These details are entered each time you make a payment as student information is NOT held within the payment system.  No student's details are given to Westpac.

PLEASE NOTE - Uniform purchases aren't to be done via POP payments.

You can refer to our website to make payments and find copies of notes sent home
