Regentville Public School Newsletter

Week 2 Term 1 2020

From the Principal - Mrs Blackmore

Welcome Back

Charlie Brown nailed it. We have been waiting around all holidays for this week, waiting for our much loved students to finally arrive back at school, it’s 100% true!

A big welcome back to all of our families and a huge and warm welcome to our new families joining our school in 2020.

I need to acknowledge our students and their teachers for what has been a wonderfully pleasant and settled start to the school year. The teachers countless hours in placing students in classes which will best support their growth and their many hours of coming in over the holidays to set up classrooms and programs has certainly paid off with happy settled students. Classes are now set for 2020.

As always students wellbeing and academic success is at the core of all decisions made at the school. It is for this reason the school has restructured the senior classes to make up seven stage based classes which have a balance of Year 5 and Year 6 students. This restructure will afford our students many additional social, emotional and academic opportunities. An information session with Stage 3 teachers is scheduled for this Thursday at 5pm in the school library.

Meet The Teacher meetings are scheduled for Week 5 (24th February onwards) and you will be notified with the details closer to the time.

Love Where You Learn

My vision as a school principal is to create a school environment where every child cannot wait to get out of bed and get to school! An aspirational goal, granted.

In 2020 one way to work towards this goal will be to have a more proactive School Representative Council through which we can access greater student voice and allow students to have more input in what they would like to have at the school in order to become flourishing young people.

We have also employed two Instructional Leaders who will support teachers to ensure students are challenged and supported to achieve their personal academic best. You may hear lots of terms like ‘grit’ and ‘brain sweat’ this year. This simply means children are challenged enough to be out of their comfort zone, encouraged not to give up and stick at difficult tasks. The skill of the teacher is to ensure we hit the ‘sweet spot’ of challenge otherwise known as 'The Goldilocks Effect' (not too hard, not to easy, but just right). The most powerful word is ‘yet’, “I can’t do it yet!”.

We have also employed a Learning and Support Assistant Principal to ensure we are able to coordinate and offer more timely assistance for our students who require additional support.  The Assistant Principal will coordinate support plans and liaise with parents, specialist staff and outside agencies so our support can be as timely, impactful and strategic as possible.

I spoke to many of our students today about the concept of Love Where You Learn. In 2019 we did quite a bit of work about being an Upstander not a Bystander and What you walk past is what you accept. I believe this has had a huge impact on students being able to achieve a sense of belonging and shared purpose in the school. There is no doubt we still have a way to go with achieving the school utopia we aspire to but definitely a great start. We will absolutely be continuing this in 2020.

I spoke to the children today about the idea of belonging and how our school uniform is a reminder that we are all part of something pretty special, Regentville Public School. I spoke about how wearing our uniform with pride shows the world just how proud we are to be at this school and shows we love where we learn. I told them that I can’t make this school exceptional on my own, I need them, their families and the school to be working together. I really encourage families to support the school in ensuring students are wearing their full school uniform. Please refer to the school uniform guide for guidance in this matter. School hats are always a tricky one but can I please assure you school hats are an expectation (don’t be tricked into being told otherwise by your very clever kids!).

There are some very exciting times ahead in 2020 and I am so happy to be part of this journey with this wonderful school community!

 Communication

As always communication in a large and complex school remains a challenge. We have three main channels of communication for our families.

The school website https://regentvill-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/

The school Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Regentville-Public-School-148626528602310/

The Regentville Public School Skoolbag app.

We expect our families will be proactive in reading newsletters and consulting the school website if additional information or clarification is required.

As we are now delivering important communication through email please ensure you update your email address at the office as soon as possible.

Traffic Safety

As student safety is our number one priority I respectfully ask that parents do not park in any of the staff car parks. We often have pedestrians in these areas and need to minimise traffic. I appreciate parking at school times is incredibly challenging but remind you of our two Kiss n Drop areas and perhaps suggest carpooling with other families to alleviate the pressure.

HEALTH CARE PLANS AND STUDENT INFORMATION

Each year we request information about any health issues for your child. It is also important that you let us know if your child’s health care needs change or if a new health condition develops. Information about allergies, medical conditions such as asthma and diabetes and other health -related issues should be provided to the school by parents.

Please also remember to notify the school office of any changes to your contact details or the contact details of your child’s nominated emergency contact. Any information you provide the school will be stored securely and will only be used or disclosed in order to support your son or daughter’s health needs or as otherwise required by law.

Our school use a fantastic app called CareMonkey. Parents and carers can update details, including contact details, via the app or register to start a new health care plan. If you are unsure of how to register we will be more than happy to help. Just ask one of our friendly office staff.

From the Office

Welcome back after what we hope was a restful summer holiday.

  • Parents if you have not updated your child's Individual Health Care Plan could you please do so by the end of next week? It is very important we have the most up to date information for your child in the event of a medical emergency. Please upload your child’s Individual Health Care Plan to their Care Monkey account.
  • If your child is new to the school or your child has a medical condition we should know about please contact Mr Bamford at the school as soon as possible.
  • If you have any questions relating to Individual Health Care Plans or the medical needs of your child please call the school office on 4733-1615.

  • Please label your children’s clothing, drink bottles, containers and other items as our lost property bin gets extremely full of items not marked with student’s names. If your child has lost a piece of clothing or drink bottle etc. please visit the office as soon as possible to check the lost property bin.

Absent Notes

It is a legal requirement for schools to keep accurate rolls. In order to do this we need to receive a note from parents for student absences. This note needs to state the nature of the absence ie. sickness, family business, short leave. The notes are to be returned within three days of the absence. After that, a reminder note will be sent home from the class teacher. The Skoolbag app has an easy to use function that allows you to generate an online note we print off  to give to teachers.

Please note that if you are planning to take your children out of the school for overseas holidays, you will need to complete an application form well prior to the date of travel. We will then return a signed certificate for you to have with you in case it is required by authorities at the airport.

Late Arrival/Early Leaving

A reminder that if your child arrives after the morning bell at 9am or has to leave prior to the 3pm bell they will need to report to the office to receive a late note/early leaver note.

This procedure is a legal requirement that is necessary to keep our class rolls accurate.

Allergic Reactions

There are an increasing number of students who have allergic reactions, some potentially life threatening, to peanuts.

It would be appreciated if peanuts, and products containing them, be excluded from student’s lunches and kept as treats for home.

Kiss and Drop

Parents and Friends, the Kiss and Drop Zones at the front and back of the school are monitored by Traffic Officials regularly. Please only use these zones to drop off or pick up your children. Do not park as the fine is quite hefty.

Procedures for Mobile Phones at school

Students should only bring mobile phones to school if parents deem it necessary to make contact before and after school.

Mobile phone contact is not needed during school hours because any emergency contact can be made through the office.

Phones should be brought to Mr Bamford’s office as soon as the student arrives at school.

Phones can be picked up from the office at 3pm.

We cannot take responsibility for any loss or damage to phones that are left in student’s bags.

Road Safety around the school

A number of parents have contacted the school to report incidents regarding the dropping off and picking up of students around our school.

There are several key points that need to be highlighted:-

·         The ‘Kiss-and-Drop’ zones are not parking areas. They are designed for parents to stay in the car with the engine running, to drop off/pick up, then leave. Under normal circumstances this process should take no longer than 20 seconds.  Council Rangers and Highway Patrol cars randomly patrol these areas

·         Students have been asked not to walk out into the bus bay area at the back to get into waiting cars

·         The car park areas are not to be used to pick up students or as pedestrian access. CAR PARKS ARE FOR STAFF PARKING ONLY.

·         There are pedestrian crossings at the front and rear of the school that should be used at all times. Adults need to model safe practices to all students

·         Parking on or near the pedestrian crossing is illegal and extremely dangerous

We are aware that parking spaces are limited, however, it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that our students are not put in danger.

Some parents ask their children to wait 5 to 10 minutes before coming and picking them up. If you are able to wait a few minutes, the congestion eases to make picking up quick and easy.

We look forward to your support with these issues to help make our school area safe for the students.

Regentville PS Awards System

Blue Awards

Blue Awards are one of the many ways that teachers can acknowledge student achievements. Students are presented these awards at Friday assemblies and records are kept of all students who receive an award.

 Silver Awards

A Silver Award* will be awarded to a student who has earned and submitted 4 Blue Awards and has also satisfied the criteria of the award:

Very Good Behaviour, Consistent Effort, Positive Attitude, School Citizenship”

Gold Awards

A Gold Award* will be awarded to a student who has earned and submitted 3 Silver Awards and has also satisfied the criteria of the award:

Excellent Behaviour, Consistently High Effort, Enthusiastic Attitude, Outstanding Citizenship”

*It is important to note that, to ensure the integrity of the awards, Silver and Gold Awards may be withheld from a student if they do not satisfy the criteria stated on the award.

 Specialist Teacher Awards

This year, we will have a number of support teachers working with classes by providing learning support for small groups of students, team teaching with teachers in the technology area, covering classes while teachers have their release from face to face (RFF), participating in sport, taking library classes and releasing executive staff to support teachers with professional learning and development. These teachers will be handing out Specialist Teacher Awards. These awards replace the previous RFF awards

(Library, Music, PD/H/PE, Computers).

Given this change we have simplified the awards process and students can trade ANY combination of

4 small RFF awards and/or Specialist Teacher Awards for a Blue Award.

ANY 4 x RFF or Specialist Teacher Awards = Blue Award

 4 x Blue Awards = Silver Award

3 x Silver Awards = Gold Award

2 x Gold Awards = Honour Board

Awards can accumulate every year and once students have the required amount these should be brought to School. Class teachers can sight the Specialist Teacher Awards/RFF awards anytime throughout the year.

Teachers will direct students to Miss Fitzgerald (Kindergarten to Year 2 students) or Mrs Macleod Jones (Year 3 to Year 6 students) to sight the awards to be traded for a Silver or Gold Award, or recognition on the Honour Board. These awards can be sighted anytime up to the Friday two weeks before the Gold and Silver Assembly each term. During this time the awards are printed and invitations are sent to parents. Awards trading then re-commences the following term.

Blue Awards are presented at Friday assemblies. Silver and Gold Awards are presented in the second last week of each term at the Gold and Silver Assembly and parents are encouraged to attend to see their child receive their award.

There are other awards presented to students that are not part of the awards trading system, such as the ‘Reggie’ awards for being safe, respectful learners and worker of the week awards.

If you require clarification about any part of this process, please contact Mr Bamford at school.
