Welcome Kindergarten 2023

I would like to thank MPPS staff, students and parents for warmly welcoming me to the school community. I was delighted to be able to welcome our new Kindergarten students on their first day of school last Thursday.  The students have settled in well, are learning routines and enjoying all aspects of school life. A big thank you to our SASS staff and our School Wellbeing Officer, Mrs Nerida Gallagher, for organising Tea and Tissues in the school hall. It was lovely to meet parents and feel the sense of excitement as the primary school journey begins.

This new leadership role is designed to work alongside Assistant Principals in providing high support to teachers in literacy and numeracy. Mrs O’Neill will work collaboratively with the leadership team in the implementation of the new English and mathematics Syllabus.

The Assistant Principal, Curriculum and Instruction will provide guidance and professional learning to staff. Mrs O’Neill will work alongside teachers in classrooms to enhance high quality teaching practices. Communication Between Home and School

Open communication is essential to maintaining a trusting and inclusive school community. We believe that the best educational outcomes will be achieved for students when teachers and parents work in partnership. We aim to keep our school community informed and follow up on feedback.

We are currently exploring the many communication tools available in SENTRAL and will slowly work towards using SENTRAL as our main communication platform. However, this will happen over time, and parents will be provided with training during the transition period.

The school currently has in place the following structures for the dissemination of information:

School Newsletter - will be distributed every second week on the odd weeks of term. Parents can access the fortnightly newsletter on the SkoolBag app and on our website.

SkoolBag App – push notifications give parents fast information and reminders about activities at MPPS. Please ensure you have downloaded the app "SkoolBag: School Communication" from your App Store.

Facebook – showcases student performances and promotes school activities.

Emails - please ensure that we have your correct email address. The administration office will email information which requires your attention.

Seesaw App – a communication tool between classroom teachers and parents to share work and activities happening in classrooms.

Term Newsletter – class teachers communicate the learning intentions of the class at the beginning of each term.

Meet the Teacher Evening – provides parents with an opportunity to meet their child’s teacher and outline class structures and organisation.

Student/parent/teacher interviews - scheduled in Terms 1 and 3. Interviews may also occur throughout the year upon request.

Student Reports – written reports on student progress are issued twice a year. Mid-year reports at the end of Semester 1 and yearly reports at the end of Semester 2.

P&C Meetings – monthly meetings provide ongoing opportunities for parents/carers to be involved in school operations and fundraising.

Who do I contact if I have a concern or would like to ask a question about my child?

First Contact:

The classroom teacher should be the first person you contact when you require information about your child. You can do this by emailing the school or calling to arrange an appointment. Our teachers are very happy to talk to parents at a mutually convenient time. Please remember that teachers have teaching and supervision responsibilities throughout the day as well as meetings and professional learning before and after school. They will respond to your request within 48 hours.

Next step if required:

If you feel that you have been unable to resolve an issue after talking to the classroom teacher, then you may ask to speak with their supervisors. The following Assistant Principals supervise the following classes:

Mrs Cheltzie Hall – K-2 classes

Miss Alice Mee – Years 3-6 classes

Then:

The Principal is available by interview to discuss issues following consultation with the relevant staff members.

Meet The Teacher Evening

Our 'Meet the Teacher Evening' has been organised for Wednesday 15 February. This evening will provide you with the opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and listen to an outline of school programs and general classroom organisation and routines. Both sessions will contain the same information, therefore you only need to attend one session at the time which is most suitable.

During the Principal’s Address, I will provide insight to the whole school vision and 2023 school initiatives. The leadership team from Marsden High School will also be in attendance and will provide an overview of Marsden High School and the programs offered. These information sessions form an important part of the school’s partnership and communication with its parents and carers, and we look forward to your attendance.

Online Safety

Online Safety

Today is Safer Internet Day. Over the next few weeks, all classes will be discussing the need to use the internet safely both at school and home. We hope that all our parents and carers will also learn more about internet safety and how to support our students to stay safe online. The information on the eSafety website is highly recommended and include free webinars for parents and carers: https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents/webinars

Student Learning Achievements

Each fortnight, one student from each class is chosen by their teacher to share an impressive piece of work with me. These students receive a Principal sticker and are presented with a Principal’s Awards at Thursdays assembly. Congratulations to the following students for their fabulous work during the first week of school.

Meet our 2023 Student Leaders

News from our Student Leaders

We were all so happy to be back at school last week. In our first week we got to meet some of our new teachers Mrs Hall, Miss  Leszczynski and Mrs Doig,  our Relieving Principal.

We also got to meet our new Sport Leaders who will help us with sports equipment at break times and at our upcoming swimming carnival.

The Buddy bench is now in use again. Any student can sit on this bench if they are looking for someone to play with. If you see someone sitting on the bench, ask them to join in your game.

The swimming carnival is coming up for Years 2-6, so don't forget to practice your swimming.

A big welcome to our new kindergartens who started last Thursday. Now we are all back at school and ready to learn.

Megan, one of your student leaders

Attendance Matters

As the term begins, it is important to remember that regular school attendance is essential for the learning and wellbeing of students. Protecting the wellbeing of our students through the reporting and monitoring of student absences is the responsibility of both parents/carers and schools. If your child is absent from school for all or part of a day, you are required to provide an explanation. You can do this via through the Skoolbag App, by email or by writing a note to the class teacher. If no explanation is received within 2 days, your class teacher will send home a reminder slip. Teachers appreciate when explanations of absences are provided promptly as following up unexplained absences is time consuming and takes away from teaching, learning and lesson preparation. Thank you for your continued assistance and support.

School Climate Surveys

Last week, information was sent to all families regarding a new project being conducted by School Infrastructure NSW. The project involves the administration of surveys, designed to gather feedback on how Melrose Park Public School is perceived by existing students, staff and families to assess their experience at the school. The information captured will assist with making informed decisions regarding improvements to the school.

As part of the project students in years 3-6, will be invited to complete the surveys during school hours, at a dedicated session on Monday 13 February 2023. Participation is anonymous and voluntary, if you wish to withdraw your child from this program, please complete the withdrawal form by Friday 10 February 2023.

Separate surveys will be completed by staff and parents/ caregivers. A parent/ caregiver information session has been scheduled for Wednesday 15 February 2023 from 2-3pm in the school hall, if you require assistance or do not have access to a device. A small team of staff from SINSW will be available to assist during the scheduled session.

Surveys can be accessed at, https://www.nsipartnerships.com.au/ or using the QR code. (This will access NSI’s website where you will then need to select ‘Start Questionnaire’ from the menu options and then enter the following access code: MPSparent. Surveys are available to complete until Sunday 19 February 2023.

Wellbeing Support Officer

Dear Melrose Families, Happy New Year and welcome back to school for 2023!

Already we are a few weeks in…

Is anyone groaning out there?

Are there any of you who feel that a new school year is somewhat daunting or a little drab?

At Melrose Park, our teachers and staff are doing their best to ensure a smooth and happy transition to a new school year.  I’m excited to be working at MPPS as the wellbeing support officer for 3 days a week this year; Mondays, Thursdays and Friday.

So, what can we do at home to try to bring some fun back into our new routines for this school year?  “A Fine Parent” have put together a list of 101 ideas to help enjoy everyday family life.  I thought I’d share just a couple of my favourites:

  • Have a race to see who can get dressed for school first (prize being breakfast in your family’s designated “winners bowl”)
  • Plant surprise notes of encouragement or jokes into lunch boxes along with healthy food (There are plenty of free printable ones via the link below)
  • Stop off at the park after school, even just for 10 minutes.  Remind the children if they come when it’s time to go, you’ll go to the park again next week.
  • Have your child read to you while you cook, discuss the story as you chop and stir.
  • Plan or persevere with eating together at the table as a family- there are so many wellbeing benefits- practice sharing your highlights of the day and talking about things that matter.

This last one is the one that I’m personally working on with my teens at home this term.  Also, our wellbeing lessons at Melrose Park are focusing on Core Values, so hopefully this will help fuel some family conversations.

If you want to read the full list of 101 ideas, with links to lunch box notes and dinner conversation prompts and you can see it here: https://afineparent.com/lighten-up/fun-things-to-do-with-kids.html

Please feel free to get in touch with me via the school office if you have any wellbeing concerns for your child this year.

Hope to see you again soon,

Nerida Gallagher

Playground Maintenance

At the end of 2022 and during the recent holidays, the school saw the completion of several projects including installation of new carpet and vinyl across several classrooms and new asphalt across the large playground area. The asphalt will take 2 weeks to cure before we can go ahead and paint new line markings for the children to enjoy.
