Term 1 Week 11 Newsletter - Friday 8 April 2022

PRINCIPAL’S THOUGHTS

Messages from Ms Colb

Thank you

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support in screening using RAT's and keeping children at home when in isolation or sick. This has enabled the school to remain open throughout the term in all cohorts.

Winter School Uniform

When we return to school next term students are expected to wear their winter uniform. Thank you to families who ensure the full school uniform is worn each day.

Construction Work

As mentioned in last weeks’ newsletter, repairs to the stormwater pit in the North playground were due to start this week. They have now been postponed to 11th April, during the school holidays.

Stage 2 of Thompson Street roundabout island works

Stage 1 of the upgrade included the new pedestrian crossing on Rawson Street. We have been informed by Canada Bay Council that the planned roundabout works (Stage 2) will commence mid-April, weather permitting. Work will be carried out Monday-Friday 7am-5pm.

Shout out to Staff

As the term comes to a close, I would like to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of our wonderful staff who have given tirelessly to the school this term and on your behalf wish them a well-deserved break.

We look forward to seeing our students back with us on Wednesday 27 April.

Best wishes for the Easter break.

Dianne Colb

Attendance at school

These attendance infographics highlight the importance of regular school attendance. We thank all families for their support in getting their children to school on time and on a regular basis. Even so, keeping your child at home during periods of illness is always supported by the school.

It is surprising however when you look at how easily the odd day off or lateness on occasion can add up over time.

If you have any questions or would like assistance in attendance matters, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

COVID SAFETY UPDATES

Reminder of COVID-19 symptoms

NSW Health and the Department of Education would like to remind schools of the full list of COVID-19 symptoms that communities should continue to look out for.
Symptoms include:
  • fever (37.5 degrees Celsius or higher)
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • shortness of breath (difficulty breathing)
  • runny nose
  • loss of taste
  • loss of smell.
Other reported symptoms include:
  • fatigue
  • acute blocked nosed (congestion)
  • muscle pain
  • joint pain
  • headache
  • diarrhoea
  • nausea/vomiting
  • loss of appetite.
Unexplained chest pain and conjunctivitis (eye infection) have also been reported as symptoms of COVID-19.
If anyone develops any of these symptoms they should get tested and isolate until they receive a negative test result.

Students and families get vaccinated – ages 5 and above

Millions of children around the world have already safely received the COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccines help protect us against serious illness and possible long-term effects from COVID-19, and also helps protect friends, family and the community by reducing the spread of the virus. Vaccinating children can help keep kids in school by reducing the likelihood of school closures and disruptions to school activities.

Get your child vaxxed today: https://www.nsw.gov.au/…/get…/vaccination-for-5-11-years-old

Changes to Self-isolation Requirements

  • A household contact will only need to self-isolate for 7 days commencing from when the diagnosed person took the test, rather than 7 days from last contact with the diagnosed person,
  • A household contact is not obligated to self-isolate as a contact more than once in a 21 day period (if the person is diagnosed with COVID-19, they will need to self-isolate again),
  • A person who had COVID-19 and later becomes a close contact or household contact does not need to self-isolate as a contact if it has been less than 8 weeks since the person finished their self-isolation period (up from 28 days in the current Order),
  • A medical clearance notice (which exempts diagnosed cases from any vaccination order for 6 weeks) will be able to be issued by or on behalf of NSW Health (in addition to a medical practitioner or nurse),
  • Updating the provisions relating to medical clearance to align with recent amendments to the Public Health (COVID-19 Care Services) Order (No 3) so that a medical clearance certificate operates as a 6 week exemption to the booster requirement as well as the requirement to have 2 doses of the vaccine.

To support students in isolation

Please access the Department's Learning From Home Hub found at:

Testing positive to COVID-19

If you test positive with a rapid antigen test, please:

1. Register your positive test on the Service NSW website so you can be linked to important health care support and advice based on your COVID-19 risk. If you or someone in your family can’t register online, please call Service NSW on 13 77 88.

If you test positive with a PCR or rapid antigen test, please:

1. Isolate immediately for 7 days.  Your household must also isolate for 7 days.  If you have a sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath after 7 days, please remain in isolation until 24 hours after your symptoms have resolved.

2. Tell people who you spent time with from the 2 days before you started having symptoms or 2 days before you tested positive (whichever came first) that you have COVID-19.  This includes your social contacts, workplace and/or school.

3. Monitor your symptoms. If you are concerned you should call your GP, the NSW Health COVID-19 Care at Home Support Line on 1800 960 933 or the National Coronavirus Helpline on 1800 020 080. If symptoms become severe call 000.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Applying for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2023

Opportunity classes cater for intellectually gifted and high potential students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates of their own academic standard. These classes help students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, using specialised evidence-based teaching methods and materials.

Parents apply when their children are in Year 4. Successful students are offered placement, and if the parents accept the offer, the students will attend the opportunity class full time in Years 5 and 6 at the relevant public school.

Applications for Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2023 open on Tuesday 26 April 2022 and close at midnight on Friday 13 May 2022. Parents and carers must apply by the due date as late applications cannot be accepted.

ALL THINGS SPORTY

End of Term 1 sport wrap up

A huge term in sport comes to an end. Unfortunately the weather wasn't kind to Stage 2 and 3 on Wednesday and cricket was called off. We'll be looking at more opportunities to engage all DPS students in sporting activities next term.

On Monday Zella Modena represented Sydney East in the NSWPSSA - Primary Diving - Championship. She came 5th in the 12-13 years girls springboard. A great result for Zella.

On Tuesday Jack Cameron, Ivan Gizycki and Micah Navendra represented IWPSSA in the Zone Basketball team. The team battled hard for 5 games with many injuries and ended up in 3rd place. The boys all did the school proud. Ivan is in the running to make the Sydney East team. Wonderful news.

Easter baking in Community language classes

Greek & Italian Easter biscuits

During this week our community languages classes have been learning about Easter celebrations in both Italian and Greek cultures. They have had a great deal of fun baking and eating Easter biscuits.

Greek Easter Biscuits

Koulourakia are butter biscuits and come in certain traditional shapes - braids, a figure eight and an s-shaped "snake". Koulourakia are traditionally made at Easter time, and are best enjoyed with milk, coffee or tea. Dunking is encouraged! Καλό Πάσχα!

Italian Easter Biscuits

In Italy, Easter has various traditional sweets. The most popular are the Biscotti di Pasqua - Uncinetti - the crochet knot. There are also the Panettone (The sweet, yeasty cake made with raisins and candied fruitsand Pandoro (A sweet, buttery Italian bread, cooked in an eight-pointed mould, giving it a ridged effect when baked and sprinkled with icing sugar). Both the Panettone and Pandoro are often also gifted at Easter, as well as at Christmas time.

Buona Pasqua!

OFFICE NEWS

Making Parent Online Payments easier

A new, upgraded POP page is now live. It replaces the old Westpac page and is accessible from the school’s website. The page allows parents and carers to make online payments anywhere and anytime. By using the upgraded page, parents and carers will enjoy:

  • a quick and simple user interface;
  • mobile-friendly experience – making it easier to pay via phone or tablet (as well as from a desktop computer); and
  • multilingual support which enables them to use POP in their preferred language.

End of Term 1 Family Statements

Thank you to all the families who have already paid for their child’s contributions and special activities this term. This week family statements were sent home and we ask you to pay before the end of term.

When making payments to school for excursions or incursions, each event has a due date for payment as highlighted in the box at the bottom of each note. This enables the school to finalise buses, book venues or tickets. Any late payments may result in children missing out on the event.

As the school is charged for each EFTPOS/credit card transaction, it is requested that parents only use one payment for your child/family when using this facility. Our preferred method of payment is for parents/carers to make payments with the secure Parent Online Payment (POP) on our Drummoyne Public School website under the MAKE A PAYMENT at the top right of the home page. https://drummoyne-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/. Payments can be made using either Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. All activities that have required payments so far this year, can be made through the POP system.

SMS Messaging

In an effort to make it easier for parents to notify the school of a student absence, we are using SMS messaging. At 10am each morning, if your child has been marked absent, you will receive an SMS message to your phone. You will then be able to respond via return SMS, phonecall, email or reply via Skoolbag with the reason for your child's absence.

If you have documentation supporting the absence (such as a medical certificate or negative COVID test result), please send it to school with your child when they return.

Please update your year groups in Skoolbag ASAP

Please update the year groups you are following in Skoolbag ASAP to make sure you receive notifications that pertain to your child/children.

Please do this in these simple steps:

1. Open the Skoolbag app on your phone

2. On the home screen press on the Drummoyne Public School symbol in the top ribbon

3. Slide across to GROUPS, where you can then add or remove the year groups you wish to see on your app.

This will ensure that you see notifications that have been sent to specific year group/s, rather than only those sent to the whole school.

School Bus Travel for 2022

School Travel Passes

Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.

In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. New Student Opal cards (including new Term Bus Passes) will be sent to the student’s nominated postal address within two weeks of their application being approved. .

Terms of Use

Students using Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use. All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel.
