Mr Frank Congedi

Principal

Dear Parents and Community Members,

Learning Conversations

This year we have decided to keep the Learning Conversations for Reception and Year 1 children at the usual time of the year in Week 9 Term 1 (Monday 28 March to Friday 1 April).  As children commenced face-to-face teaching from the beginning of the year, invitations have been sent out early this week.

As Years 2 to 6 began online Learning in the first 2 weeks and subsequently, their face-to-face teaching was delayed, we have decided to postpone their Learning Conversations to Term 2 Week 2 (Monday 9 May to Friday 13 May) to ensure that teachers have more information and data on their learning progress.  A letter will go out to families before the end of the term to book a time.

Learning Conversations are an important part of your child’s learning process.  It is important for you and your child to meet with your child’s teacher/s, and we ask 100% participation from each family.  Although we are hoping for as many face-to-face meetings as possible it is important to remember that this year, we have children, parents, or class teachers who may:

  • have tested COVID-19 positive
  • be in quarantine as close contacts
  • display symptoms or feel unwell

In these cases, these meetings will need to occur over the telephone unless people are not feeling well enough to participate.

State Election

The SA Commission for Catholic Schools (SACCS) wrote to all political parties with candidates in this election and asked them to provide a response to the 7 key issues that are of significance to our families and the Catholic education sector.

As we have State Elections this Saturday, I have provided the commitment from the parties who responded on Facebook, Skoolbag and in the link below.  Catholic Schools educate 20% of children in South Australia and we are keen for you to be aware what each party is committing to students in Catholic Schools.

Registered Volunteers

At our school we are blessed with many registered volunteers who support our school in a myriad of ways.  This support is very important to maximise opportunities for our children and build our school community.  As you are aware registered volunteers need to have a valid Catholic Police Check and, in addition, now need to show evidence of being double vaccinated. If you have not yet done so, please visit the front office to have your certificate sighted, or email a copy to info@whitefriars.catholic.edu.au.  We do not keep hard copies.

After School Sports

It is amazing that we have 139 children who are currently representing Whitefriars Catholic School in either a Netball team or a Basketball team.  A huge thank you to all our parents and community members who are registered volunteers and actively coaching a team or managing a team.

As training occurs either in the mornings before school or after school, it is important that parents support coaches and team managers by being present at training or plan with other parents to be responsible for your child if an issue arises or an injury.

COVID Safe Practices

It is great that family members no longer require to complete a QR code as you enter the school, but I continue to ask all family members to avoid entering classrooms and continue to wear masks whilst on school site unless you have a medical exemption.

As a school, we continue to do what we can to keep our children and staff as safe as possible and, simultaneously, minimise disruption to learning.   I thank you for your continued support in this matter.

Please remember that if your child is a close contact that OSHC is not encouraged.  However, if you require to go to work and are unable to make alternative arrangements, you can still book your child into OSHC if they are not symptomatic.

Thank you for your ongoing patience during this pandemic and please continue to keep the Ukrainian community in your prayers.  Each human being is made in the image of God and every life matters.  I hope that peace will prevail as soon as possible, and I ask for continued prayers for peace.

Kind Regards,

Frank Congedi

Prayers for People Affected by Conflict and Flood

On Wednesday the 16th of March – all classes used the afternoon to share in two prayers to pray for:

  • Peace between Russia and Ukraine, to allow for those affected to be safe,
  • The people in Queensland and New South Wales whose homes and livelihoods have been affected by floodwaters.

The two prayers are attached if you would like to share them with your friends and family.

Second Week of Lent

This week through Project Compassion we learn about Biru who lives in a rural village in India’s east.  He lost mobility in one of his legs after contracting polio as a child.  Biru worked as a shepherd, looking after other people’s cattle to support his wife and four daughters.  Keeping up with the cattle was a challenge.

Biru taught himself how to repair bicycles by watching other people, but he never dreamed of using those skills to start his own business.  With your generous support, Biru was able to access an entrepreneurship and livelihoods training program, run by Caritas Australia’s partner, Caritas India.  He gained the support and skills he needed to start his own bicycle repair business.  Now, Biru earns enough money to support his family.

Mathematics

In Mathematics we are learning about numbers. We looked at place value, factors, prime and composite numbers. In class we timed ourselves to write table answers from two to twelve times. Scarlett has the fastest time with 2 minutes and 37 seconds and Charlie is second with 2 minutes and 40 seconds. By Jacob.

Religious Education

In Religious Education, we've been learning about Project Compassion and Lent. For Lent, the 5/6's have been performing the 40 ACTS OF KINDNESS. From picking up litter, to making someone smile, are little but important acts of kindness. We have been doing these acts of kindness every day and colouring in our kindness tree for every act we do. In Project Compassion, we have been looking at how Caritas Australia is providing support and helping communities that are less fortunate than us. We have learnt to be grateful for what we have and to support people who can't go to school or have no food. By Scarlett.

Italian

In week 10 on the 5th of April, we are celebrating an Italian tradition called "Carnevale." The 5/6 classes are designing Italian cars. Our car will be blue to represent the house team Joseph. We can't wait to race them! It will be exhilarating acceleration! Of course, our car will be the BEST! Do you like my sketch?  By Aislea.

Art

In Art we are learning about James Rizzi and his art work. He was born October 5th 1950 in Brooklyn New York and died December 26th 2011 (age 61). When he draws he has very exaggerating eyes and mouths and a unique style. He is also known for his 3D art work. By Micah.

Carnevale Day

On Tuesday 5 April we will celebrate Carnevale Day at Whitefriars.  Carnevale, also known as Mardi Gras or in Italian, Martedi Grosso, is celebrated in Italy and many places around the world 40 days before Easter, and is a final celebration before Ash Wednesday and Lent.  Students have focussed on Carnevale during this first term as part of the Italian programme.

Parents Welcome

When the gates open at 8:25am on Friday, you are invited to join us in the school yard for some traditional Italian music, coffee and biscuits.

Gelati Orders - close 4pm Mon 21 March

Students will have the opportunity to order a small tub of gelato, supplied by St George Cakes and Gelati for $2.50 each.  The gelato flavours offered are chocolate, strawberry or lemon.  Orders are to be made via the school's QKR app, however if this is not possible, please clearly label an envelope with your child's name, class, flavour of gelati and the correct money and send it to the front office.  Orders close Monday 21 Mar (wk 8).

Pasta Lunch Orders - close 4pm Fri 1 April

Students can order a variety of pastas for lunch, which will include spaghettic bolognese, beef lasagna and penne napolitana (vegetarian option).  These special orders will be available through our school QKR app and orders close at 4pm, Friday 1 April.  Please note that only drinks and snacks will be available on this day from the canteen.

Wear Italian Colours

Students are invited to wear Italian colours of green, white and red, or Italian soccer tops for the day, along with sports uniform.
