Out and About at Wandal

From the Principal

Welcome to the new school year. Monday was exciting as we watched existing students return to their friends, new families navigating their way around the school, new teachers meeting their students and our preppies in their new uniforms. The buzz in the air created a wonderful community, and I look forward to catching up with all classes soon.

As Wednesday finishes, every class has attended their first four specialist lessons for the year. These include PE with Mr Tapscott, The Arts with Mrs Walker, AUSLAN with Miss Godbaz and STEM with Miss McLennan, Mrs Hutchinson, or Mrs Hannah.

This week classes have been discussing expectations, school mission, growth mindsets and learning goals. These are designed to prepare our learners for a productive year of learning gain. Families are welcome to join our open classroom afternoon and discover what is happening on Tuesday, 7 February, from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm.

I’m looking forward to a great year of success with our students.

Enjoy your Australia Day Holiday

Gospel Prayer Reflection

Jesus calls the disciples to leave their livelihoods and follow in his footsteps. Fishing was a major food industry in first century Palestine. A person who owned a boat and fishing nets had a secure and profitable occupation. These first disciples were not simple peasants. And yet they left their past behind to follow while not really understanding their destination. This is faith!

May we be ready to recognise and follow when God invites us to leave past ways behind and follow Jesus in faith. © Liturgy Help

Happy New Year!

Welcome to the 2023 school year.  We are so excited for another fun year of learning and creating together.  Welcome to our new families.  We are so happy that you have joined us.  Welcome back to our existing families - we are so pleased to see you again.

This year promises to be an interesting year of learning in each of our classes.  Make sure you have checked out the term newsletters from your year level teachers.

Don’t forget to join us at our ‘Open Afternoon’ (Tuesday 7 February at 3:30 p.m.

Unpacking our learner dispositions

The beginning of the year is a very exciting time to establish goals and consider what we value as a learning community.  This year, the leadership and teaching teams have decided to make our very important learner dispositions a key focus.  We are beginning by focussing on how important it is to be a reflective learner.

Being reflective is about using feedback, considering how we impact our own learning (as well as that of others in our learning communities), and being flexible as a learner.

We are very excited to implement ‘Thinking Journals’ in each of our classes this year.  This will be a place where we can consider what thinking we are doing in our learning.  These thinking skills will come from the Australian Curriculum, especially the ‘cognitive verbs’.  This means we won’t just be considering what information we need to learn, but also what thinking skills we will be using to learn these concepts.  These will be skills like:

●     Investigating

●     Creating

●     Exploring

●     Classifying

●     Representing

A full list of the cognitive verbs can be found at https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/p-10/aciq/version-8/frequently-used-resources/cognitive-verbs/cognitive-verbs-overviews
