Sutton Public School

Week 2 Term 4 - 23rd October

From the Principal

Nominations for student leadership roles 2021 now open

This term, Year 5 students will have the opportunity to run for School Captain or Prefect in 2021. The process for this will begin with interested students writing a letter to the principal explaining why they would be a good fit for Captain or Prefect in 2021. Letters are due to Mrs Sullivan by Friday 13th November, 2020 (week 5).

Mrs Sullivan will reply to each student encouraging them to prepare a speech for a special assembly that will be held on Wednesday 9th December, 2020 (week 9).

Following this assembly, the staff and students in Years 1-6 will vote for our 2021 School Captains and Prefects. The successful students will be announced at our end of year presentations.

View the student leadership policy here.

Looking ahead

Parents of Year 5 students, please find information about the Selective High Schools process for 2022 through this link.

2020 Transition to High School programs

For our graduating class of 2020, the transition to high school has already begun. As our students attend such a wide range of schools, including ACT schools,  it is important that you contact your chosen high school if you have any questions about times and dates of activity days. We do our very best to stay informed about these days however, information is not sent directly to our school.

End of Year Presentations and Celebrations - save the date!

We are working hard to determine the best way forward in planning presentation assemblies for all our classes and a fitting Year 6 farewell despite the impact of COVID-19.  While details are still be finalised, with further updates on restrictions expected after November 12th,  we do know that during the day on Friday 11th December we will hold our presentation assemblies and on the evening of Monday 14th December we will hold our Year 6 farewell.  Please note these dates and watch our newsletters and Skoolbag notices for future updates.

Grandparents, we miss you!

This is a year in which we have not been able to enjoy many of the treasured traditions of Sutton Public School - none more sadly missed then our annual Grandparents and Special Visitors day.  Because of COVID we have not had the opportunity to perform for you, we can't share our school work with you and we can't  proudly show you around our school, introducing you to teachers and friends or show you our favourite books in the library.  We do have our online booksale however, and we hope our special people might still wish to make a contribution to our library collection.  Details are below and the sale remains open until October 30th.

Better behaviour on the buses expected

When travelling on buses, students must observe the NSW Department of Transport Code of Conduct to protect their own safety, and the safety and comfort of other students. A copy of the Code of Conduct is available below for your information.  Please refer to section 5.1 - Unacceptable behaviour.

The right to travel with the school bus service  may be withdrawn as a result of poor behaviour. The school addresses all reports of inappropraite behaviour.  Concerns are also raised with QCity transit

Sutton students travelling by bus are well informed regarding expectations for behaviour. They therefor understand our concerns regarding recent reports of swearing, loud and distracting behaviours and moving when the bus is in motion.  When travelling to and from school on the bus all students must remain seated, wear a seat belt if provided, maintain a low level of voice for the comfort and safety of others, follow the directions of the driver and be courteous at all times.

It will be appreciated if all parents of students travelling by bus assist our staff and that of QCity Transit by reinforcing this message with their children.

Medication at school

A reminder that if your child is required to take any medication at school, they are to be handed into the office along with a completed "Request for support at school of a student's health condition form". This applies to any medication (Panadol, Claratyne, Ventolin etc). No medications are to be left in your child's bag.

Grandparents and Families Online Book Sale

For the past few years, a book sale has been part of our Grandparents Day. These books were kindly purchased for the school library. Sadly, the day was not possible this year. As an alternative, an online book sale will be available on the school website from Monday 19th October for two weeks, closing 2nd November. The books include picture books, fiction for younger and older readers, new releases, popular titles which need replacing and some "information" books. any of these books would be welcome additions to our well used library.

The book sale is an opportunity for a "conversation" with grandparents. unfortunately it won't be under the trees on a sunny, spring day, however, with use of digital technology (and maybe some support) that conversation could still take place!

Payment is to be made online via the school website or Skoolbag app. In "Payment Options" please select "Other" and in "Payment Description" please insert "Grandparents Day Book Sale".  Please advise the school via email which book/s were purchased and the receipt number of the payment.

Winners of the Book Writing Competition

The winners will be announced on Wednesday 28th October. There has been a huge number of entries for 2020. Our creative writers have delighted our judges and are, rightly, proud of themselves. Warmest congratulations to each Sutton author and illustrator.

We hope you can join us in getting creative!

School Travel for 2021

Applications for student travel in 2021 opened Monday 12th October 2020.

Students who require a travel pass for 2021 can now apply online. A new application should be submitted if a student is applying for a school travel pass for the first time of requesting an additional pass as a result of a new shared parental responsibility situation.

Students who have changed schools, changed address, repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should re-apply or update their details.

Where there is a change of distance eligibility based on a students grade, the system will automatically update a student's entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If a student needs to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before December 2020 to ensure that current student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card remains valid. If their application is submitted after December 31 2020, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to be issued.
