Husky Star Newsletter Week 10 Term 2 2020

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are coming to the end of the school term, however, there are a few notices you may like to add to your diaries:

Student Reports

We will be sending home our student reports tomorrow (except for 5/6 Currambene who are trend setters and sent theirs home today!) In reading through the reports, I have been so impressed to see the overall progress that our students have been making, even through all the upheaval and disruption these last months. This speaks so highly of how well our families and teachers have worked together to support learning - in every location. Thank you all for such a sustained effort. If you would like to discuss your child's report with his or her classroom teacher, please call our office to schedule a meeting.

Pyjama Day

On Friday, we will be having Pyjama Day! This is a gold-coin fundraising event by our SRC to raise funds for Alex M. in our school. Alex's class is hoping they may be able to schedule a Zoom in with him at the hospital - in what will definitely be a different take on a Pyjama Party! All students (and teachers) are encouraged to wear their pyjamas to school on Friday. All donations will be given to Alex with the express wish for him to buy games and toys. Well done SRC students on your initiative - I know that Alex and his family will be so pleased by your support.

Enrolments for Kindergarten in 2021

If you have a child who will be starting Kindy next year, now is the time to contact the school to discuss enrolment. Further Information will be sent out early in Term 3.

School Term Break

We would like to wish our students and families a most relaxing break for the winter school holidays. Our break starts this Friday, with students returning to school on Tuesday 21st July. Have a safe, fun and well-deserved break!

Warm regards,

Kim Lovell

Library News

Lego Mania Hits the Library

The library got smashed this week with the Lego-maniacs from Kindy to Year 2. Not only do they spend some of their library time building amazing creations but they flock to our learning space during recess to continue creating.  It is wonderful to see so many students taking advantage of our extensive collection of Lego building bricks. This week they were surprised to see a real Lego table and chairs turn up in the library for even more fun!

Zac and Maddi McGill gifted Anh Do’s book Wolfgirl to our collection last week when they found out that we had the second book, but not the first.Thank for your kind and thoughtful donation!

Overdue Books - We still have in excess of 50 books that are overdue and it would be a nice surprise if they all come flooding back before the end of term.  Next week is the last week of borrowing and I highly recommend that students take home some extra reading material.  Winter is a great time to curl up and read, read, read!  Have a great weekend everyone.

From the Garden

Gardening for Sustainability - CARROTS!

The children reaped the rewards of their hard work in the garden. Students from Stage 1 and Stage 2 were excited at pulling out and tasting the carrots they had grown from seed this semester. We had some unusual shapes but this provided an important lesson in recognising that not all vegetables grow perfect, but this does not alter their taste nor their nutrients.

Happy gardening during the holidays! Carrots, peas, cabbage, leafy greens are all great for your winter garden.

Stage Two

Stage 2 have learnt about the impacts of smoking during Drug Education lessons. The children created posters and brochures to share their knowledge with friends and family. Here are some student samples.

Mrs Norris

They have also been creating short monologues throughout the term and learning about filmmaking techniques. They have explored storyboarding and camera angles and experimented using some professional filmmaking equipment.

Ms Lewis

During Term Two students have been learning about film making and story boarding.
Students have been learning about Australian neighbouring countries and have worked in pairs to complete a research project.

Smoking No Way!

Tournament of Minds and Game Changer Teams

Lunchtimes are always jam-packed full of activities and it is not just eating and playing.  Some students have been spending their lunchtimes with Ms Loui and Mrs Hanson trying out for the Tournament of Minds and the Game Changer teams. Congratulations to the following team members: Tournament of Minds - Chi, Keshy, Abby, Evie G, Kate, Tahlia, and Olivia.  They will be completing their challenge over the course of six weeks during Term 3 and then submitting their solution online for judging. The Game Changers are:  Evie S, Ashley, Angela, Ella, and Mali. They will be working with Ms Leslie on the Department of Education challenge: “How might we use technology to bring everyone in our community closer together?”   Good luck to all team members.  We all look forward to seeing the results of your problem-solving endeavours!

TOM Team

Stage three have been making Gold films in the library to compliment their Term 2 History unit.
