Newsletter 20 November

From the Principal

Hi everyone,

Well, what a roller coaster we have had this week! I'm sure that many of us have had our brains challenged and our heads spinning. The main thing is that we are all doing what we can to keep each other safe :-)

As per my letter earlier today all students are able to come to school as normal from Monday - we look forward to seeing them all.

Hopefully we will still be able to have our end of year swimming excursions but will keep everyone updated.

Staffing Update

Lyndal Chittleborough has decided to take leave for the rest of the term. Kate Staniford will be taking Indonesian until the end of the term.

Student Free Day

At this stage our student free day on Monday 30th November will be going ahead. If you require OSHC for your child/ren on that day please contact Rosie to book them in.

Reports & Classes

Staff are busily writing reports and we are finalising 2021 classes. Reports will be sent to parents in the last week of term, along with notification of which class/es your child/ren will be in next year. We will also be arranging a visit to the new class during that last week.

Take care and stay safe. Enjoy the weekend sunshine.

Regards

Pam

Working Bee - 8 November

Room 13 Trip to the Zoo

At the start of the day, Room 13 met up with their pen pals from Nailsworth Primary at the Adelaide Zoo. After a quick play on the playground, students got into their groups and set off to look at the animals. Some of our favourite animals were the otters, meerkats, tamarins and the pygmy hippo. It was great to finally meet our pen pals from Nailsworth after writing to them for almost a year. (James Ness)

After lunch as a class activity, we split up into 4 groups to go around the zoo and find threatened animal species. Each group had a choice of 16 animals and had to write why they are endangered and what was the zoo doing to help protect the species. The reason for writing down what the zoos are doing to help these species is to spread awareness about what we could do to help the animals, to stop them becoming extinct. (Annabel Whyte)

Room 11 and 12 at the Zoo, too!

Geography in Room 8

In geography, the Year 4’s are studying Africa and South America and the Year 3’s are studying Australia’s neighbouring countries. As part of a cross curricula focus, I’ve included some art activities based on traditional ideas from each culture. So far, the students have made 3D African masks and then made South American Carnival masks. There are some before and after pictures of the African masks, showing the different layering techniques of thick cardboard, cutting techniques and blending using oil pastels. The end results are a bright and interesting display in the classroom.

Sports News

Girls’ and Boys’ District Softball

In Week 4, we had a number of talented students selected in the Hills District Softball teams. These students spent four days down at West Beach competing against other districts from all across the state. They played a number of games each day, learnt a heap of new skills, made some new friends and finished the week exhausted. Congratulations to the following students for making the team:

Cameron W, Jonah S, Kieran C, Marli M, Truman A, Bonnie H, Florence B, Lily F, Toby B, Claire M, Hannah V, Isobel S, Lexie F.

State Swimming and Athletics Championships

The State Swimming and Athletics Championships, which were scheduled for this week, have unfortunately been cancelled due to the recent COVID outbreak. This is very disappointing for the students involved but I would still like to acknowledge these students and their momentous achievement in making the team.

The state swimming students were selected earlier this year at the Courier Cup way back in Term 1 and the state athletic students were selected at the District Athletics Carnival held earlier this term (Week 1).

Congratulations to the following students for making their respective teams:

State Swimming Team Members
Kieran C, Julia M, Josh C, Charlotte T

State Athletic Team Members
Cameron W, Jonah S, Lily F, Lara S, Patrick S, Claire M, Isobel S, Ivy A, Johan L

Cheers,

Victoria Gaetjens
