We have come to the end of another busy term at school. I have been lucky to be the Relieving Principal for the past six weeks and witness the teaching and learning that has been happening across our school. I have been able to see teachers working together to ensure the very best outcomes for our students and the crucial support provided by our families. Thank you to the community for supporting the teaching, learning and wellbeing of all our students. Especially for your understanding around not having access to our site without prearranging an appointment with the front office.
This term 25 students participated in the ICAS Maths competition. These are designed to recognise academic excellence; students are assessed on their ability to apply classroom learning to new contexts using higher order thinking and problem-solving skills. Congratulations to the following students who received prizes:
Anthony L - Distinction
Sophia L - Credit
Kevin T – Credit
Arissa S - Merit
Wafeeq A - Merit
Shaba A - Merit
Moiz J - Merit
You may be aware that our Preschool was awarded two grants to undertake two initiatives here at Punchbowl Public School. One is a project to improve student learning and wellbeing in early years using universal design for learning (UDL) and co-teaching. The second, a process for capturing the voices of students with disability in Individual Education Plans using a visual tool to include their goals. We are seeing a huge impact on our students and their families and look forward to embedding what we have learnt into our everyday practices. Well done to all our preschool staff, students and families.
Kindergarten have also embarked on a project this term. Early Learning STEM Australia (ELSA) is a play-based digital learning program for children to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). ELSA allows children to play, experiment and make sense of the world around them – which is part of STEM, and also part of being a child. ELSA’s STEM Practices encourage children to ask questions, make predictions, experiment, and reflect on what happened and why.
The ELSA program is a key early childhood initiative of the Australian Government. ELSA has been developed by the STEM Education Research Centre (SERC) at the University of Canberra through funding provided by the Australian Government Department of Education under the National Innovation and Science Agenda.
Our Kindergarten team and their families have been accessing this learning which is very exciting and engaging for our students.
Our school is participating in a survey that allows parents to express their views about their perceptions of their children's experiences at home and school and we are asking parents to take some time to complete the survey by following the link below.
http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/c4ydj
Your participation in the survey is anonymous and confidential. When you submit your survey, the responses are recorded on a secure site without personal identifying information. Your answers will be mixed with those of other parents and caregivers from the school. You may skip any questions you do not wish to answer, other than the one asking which school year your child is in.
Enjoy the Spring Holiday break. Stay safe. We will see everyone back at school on Monday 12 October, energised and rested.
